The ‘Star Wars’ I love won’t be out on DVD

Three things:

One, could BIM digitize his VHS copies onto a computer and then record them onto a DVD? I know you cannot copy commercial tapes, but if you had a video capture card, could you simply record them as some kind of video file, then dump them to DVD? I'm not sure how that works.

Two, I really don't like the changes, but I still will probably buy the DVD. I do think Greedo shooting first is pointless, as not only does it take a little away from Han's character, but this "preemptive strike" was justified. I mean, Greedo was going to shoot him. He said it, and he had his gun out. And Lucas should really be trying to get Hayden Christiansen into less movies, not more.

That being said, I do find one huge fault with the guy's article. The part about the curator of the Louvre changing the Mona Lisa. The guy who is changing Star Wars is the same guy who made it. Ultimately, it is his choice.

Oh, and the Mona Lisa is a painting. Not a bust.

I predict there will be plenty of black market copies available on DVD or the next popular media format if Lucas continues to refuse to release the original theatrical editions.

The "Greedo" scene is HUGE as it relates to who Solo is when we first see him and his character development from that point on.

Again, I grew up with the originals and that's what I want on DVD. Until then, I'll pass. I'm not going to be like a sheep and buy it simply because it's SW and it's "better than nothing." To me, I'd rather have nothing, although I might like to see some of disc 4, provided it contains more than the behind the scenes footage I've recently seen on cable.

He was just pointing out that films should be unchanging like other works of art, like the Mona Lisa. Kind of a strange comparison, but I understand his point.

All of the fans who love the originals now feel slighted by Lucas because they weren't what he set out to make and he felt the need to change them in the way that he did. The fans accepted the originals and it's a little insulting when anyone, even the creator, comes along YEARS later and says..."Nah, it needs to be like THIS."

What many of the fans have a problem with is how Lucas did the changes - most movies have a DVD release which contains the original theatrical version of said movie and a special edition or director's cut on the same disc or in another release. You can at least get a copy of the original theatrical release and one of the director's cut for most films (except Blade Runner...don't get me started.... ).

Rather than go that route, Lucas decided to tinker with his films here and there and then declare those altered versions the one and only versions. UGH. The trilogy released yesterday is the director's cut, regardless of how Lucas wants to spin it.

Imagine if every filmmaker went back and edited their films when technology advanced...it would be ridiculous. Just because we CAN add color to classic films - should we?

And just because special effects have advanced, should we go back and edit right over effects which were considered groundbreaking in their own time?

Oh, and the Mona Lisa is a painting. Not a bust.

I went to Fry's, they were all sold out of widescreen. They were selling fullscreen for 36.99.

I then booked it over to Best Buy, where it was $51. I told 'em Fry's had it for $36.99 and they sold it to me for $36.99. Best Buy will price match.

I thought I had strong feelings against Lucas making the changes, but after picking up the set and watching the 2-hour documentary (disk 4), Lucas always had stated that "Star Wars" was only about 75% of what he had envisioned.

I guess with Lucas as the creator of the film, I am OK with him making (the slight) changes he did.

as much as it is killing me to not buy them on DVD - I've got them on VHS. Lucas is single-handedly killing this franchise. At some point the originals will surface on DVD be it legal or via other means and that's when I'll buy them.

I don't know about that. They made over $100 million on the First Day of sales. Sounds like they did pretty well to me.

I'm 31.

The first movie I saw in the theater was Episode IV when I was 4 years old (Although I don't remember much except that I went to the theater that time). My favorite toy was the AT-AT i got for Christmas. I grew up wanting to be Hans Solo. Then I wanted to be Carey Fischer's Bikini after Return of the Jedi.



Which reminds me, I need to go watch Return of the Jedi right now in High Def.

Last time I checked I don't believe VHS was available when Star Wars first came out.... so those of you who watch the movies on VHS are hypocrites.... plain and simple
