Van Gundy on ESPN doubling down on his comments about Joe Ingles in game 3 loss to the Warriors. In the game Curry drove to the basket and as he started up for the shot Ingles slapped down and the ball game loose and they called a late foul on Ingles. Ingles immediately started yelling at the ref "I got all ball", the crowd went nuts, even the announcers were perplexed. Then they showed the replay and clear as day Ingles hit Curry on the left arm a good 8 inches away from the ball, not only did he not get all ball, he got no ball at all, he got all arm.
Van Gundy then said he thinks NBA refs should get a "challenge" when a player does that they throw the flag and check the replay. If the player is telling the truth there's no foul and the ref gets some penalty, if the player is lying, the player is tossed out of the game.
I think he's joking but he's making a bigger point that the NBA has an issue that sort of follows that of International Soccer where players are getting so good at faking things to draw calls, that the players are now arguing on every play. Curry of course does it too trying to draw fouls and of course Harden is the gold standard for it now but his point was when a guy like Joe Ingles starts arguing you think he doesn't have a bad rep he must be telling the truth, and then you find out he's not.
Van Gundy says the league needs to come up with stricter rules to punish players who are gaming the system, post game reviews and some sort of fines or technicals. It's tough if you did that now Harden would have to change his entire game.
