I can't imagine paying $35m a year to have JJ McCarthy throw at you. They better hope he hits the ground running.

Generally speaking these young QBs with good, offensive HCs tend to figure it out faster than not. The hand-wringing over JJMc still makes me laugh.

Interesting take

Rams special teams coordinator Chase Blackburn says the job of a kickoff returner under the NFL’s new kickoff rule is a lot like the job of a center fielder in baseball.

Blackburn said he anticipates that the Rams and the teams they play against will make their kickoffs more like line drives and go for less hang time under the new kickoff rule, on the theory that they don’t want opposing returners to have enough time to settle under the ball and get a running start. That means a returner has to be able to judge where the ball is going as soon as it’s off the kicker’s foot, and adjust accordingly.

Eh I think JJMc has a lower floor than most first round QBs because we didn't even see a high level college QB consistently.
You didn't see a high level of college production. Why didn't he produce...because he didn't have to. He lost one game in two seasons. Went 28 for 44 63% in two games vs Ohio St, 411 yards passing, 4 TDs, 0 ints, ran for 44 yards and 1 TD. Won both of those games vs Ohio St. 17-27 vs Alabama in a playoff game, 221 yards passing, 3 TDs, 0 ints. Won that game. I really don't care that he didn't pad his stats vs Nebraska.

What I feel this board misses in terms of college QBs is that the college game doesn't really project to the NFL game. So when you are looking at prospects, you have to project the skills and traits more than the production. It is why Anthony Richardson was a first round pick despite many on this board saying he shouldn't be. It wasn't about what he did at Florida, and more about what he could do in the NFL.

As you said, college stuff really makes no difference. Watching the kid play, nothing screamed first round QB. Nothing screamed anything more than 3rd-round or lower taking a flyer on a QB pick. He was also one of those late risers because the NFL loves to outthink itself. He's a bust in waiting. If he wasn't a white Michigan QB he never even would have been a late riser.
