and that would be fine... if they actually mined that story more and really gave it as the motivation for Tony retiring, but it was so glossed over. and even if they were going to do that as is, he literally JUST retired in the last Iron Man 3. they hit the same beats over and over again and it's just getting tired.

along the same lines... they keep killing characters in their movies... trying to make big emotional moments and then reviving them. They've done it with Loki TWICE, Agent Coulson, Nick Fury and now Jarvis. They've gone down the Rocky road of having to give motivation by killing their Mickey/Apollo's... which is pretty weak in of itself... but at least those guys STAYED DEAD. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Quick Silver somehow came back to life in the next Avengers movie at this point even though he was riddled with bullets.

I think this is lost on comic book fans because in the comic book world, nobody is ever dead. Even when they die huge, epic emotional deaths like Superman in the 90's, they just come right back. Gotta keep selling comics, gotta keep making movies.

I agree tho it is weak and I swear that is exactly the conversation I had with my daughter after the movie:

"I loved it but I'm sad that Quicksilver is dead."

Me:
"Oh dont worry about that I'm he'll be back."

It's a staple in comics and they have carried it over to the movies now, just look at X men, hell they just resurrected EVERYONE! lol Atleast they explained how and why everyone is now alive tho.

I give X-Men a pass because a) it kinda made sense and b) they righted some TERRIBLE wrongs made a an even worse creative team in Last Stand.

This. It's just part of the genre. Actually this doesn't bother me nearly as much as killing off bad guys for instance in countless other comic book films. The original Batman (killing Joker for example) or in the latter films Two Face. My second biggest pet peave is revealing the secret identity of the hero. Yes, it does happen in the comics but in the Batman franchise it seemed like someone found out every movie. It's happened in other comic films.

All of that stuff bothers me WAY more than anything dealing with death or glossing over some of the other comic elements.

What's really starting to bother me is the repetitiveness. That's why I think that Guardians and Captain America 2 were so well-received. They are the most different of the Marvel movies.

There is definitely a formula, but it is getting tired. Which is funny considering how much flack the new Batman v. Superman movie is getting--it definitely won't be the Marvel style.

I am just ready for all the pieces to fall in place now that the Avengers are figuring out there is a bigger picture at play. I suspect that Thor Ragnarok is where everything comes out in terms of Thanos. That and I am looking forward to the Civil War. Almost by default these films that deal with these stories should feel different.

Agreed. My issue with Bats v. Supes isn't that it's changing the formula though. It just looks freaking dreary.

Is this movie any good? I am always entertained when I watch super hero movies, but since I was never really into super heroes, they aren't my first choice for movies to go see.

I loved it. I thought it was great. I guess it depends on what kind of hero movie you like? If you like moody (a la Dark Knight) probably not for you. If you like more of the "light" but fun type movie, you will like it IMO.

I try not to compare the two types because they are very different type movies IMO. I happen to love them both but people often compare which is very difficult. It comes down to your taste in movies.

Interesting stuff. This is the second article where I read that Joss Whedon didn't exactly have a smooth time with studio execs on the film. It appears they fought him from a creative and story perspective multiple times throughout the film.

If you read between the lines, it appears he was just mentally exhausted with the process, battles and gave in with some stuff. That probably explains missing scenes with the Norn (lady disrobing in the cave from the preview) and why some things felt glossed over in the film. The interesting part is it sounds like they were not convinced Thor should have been part of this film but Whedon fought for that by coming up with a sub-plot the execs didn't like.

http://www.slashfilm.com/joss-whedo...was-supposed-to-be-in-avengers-age-of-ultron/

It's probably safe to say with how exhausted he is, the back to back huge films and the challenges of dealing with the execs...he is probably done for good. I thought there would be a chance for him to comeback after a break but after reading the last couple articles....I don't think so.

I get that you get it, I was just explaining why more people (especially hardcore fans of comics) aren't put off by it.

That's why the Batman voice thing never bothered me. People in the Dark Knight were all huffy because of Batmans "Batman" voice, but seriously people, these guys go to all the trouble of putting on extremely elaborate disguises and maintaining secret identities, surely you dont expect them to speak in their normal speaking voice? Just from a practical standpoint, it's the logical thing to do. You gotta maintain your secret identity at all costs right?

Although if Kim Basinger, or Nicole Kidman in the 90's had asked me to tell her who I was, I would have forsure. :p OK OK I'M BATMAN, NOW LETS GO GET FREAKY IN THE CAVE!

Sure, throw your voice, but try not to sound like James Earl Jones with a mouthful of gravel talking like a beatnik :D

man... I've been watching bits and pieces of Guardians the last couple night on Starz. That movie is truly great. Great characters, dialogue, action, story. Drax is beyond hilarious.

I can't get enough of it. If I'm bored and there isn't anything to watch, I'll throw that on and watch it. I have probably watched it in full about 10 times now and 20 or so times in bits and pieces. :D

The thing that totally drags it down for me is Lee Pace. My God was the bad guy pretty much boring and the opposite of menacing. What sucks is that could have been remedied if they had added 5 to 10 minutes of footage showing him do some awful things. Plus I still hate the talking fur ball and the endless slow mo of him screaming.

I guess for me those two things are enough to knock it down a few pegs on the overall Marvel film list for me. I love the sound track and most of the other characters though.

It's a solid 7 out of 10, well worth the price of admission...even if it's just to see the spectacle play out on the big screen.

saw it again today and it was definitely less fun the second time. I was pretty bored in parts.

We saw this today as a family for "Mother's Day". I am not a big comic-based superhero movie guy, but it was fun. I did fall asleep a couple times, but my wife woke me up. :)

I was also the polar opposite. I took my son and daughter this time to see it and I enjoyed it even more the second time. I had more time to process what was going on and was able to pick up more of the dialogue.

I saw this Avengers today and I liked it far less than the Guardians. And, I liked it far less than the first Avengers. "Meh". That's my review.

For me, Guardians is hands down the best of all the Marvel movies so far. It was so well done and I was hugely surprised by how funny it was.

I kind of got annoyed at the end when it seemed like they were setting up something like 10 other movies to come. Especially the Junior Avengers angle. Also, it sure seems like Guardians and Avengers will intersect at some point and how many heroes will be in that movie? Ten at a minimum, probably more, which just seems like too damn many to tell a good story.

I still can't believe an Olsen twin was in this movie.

Edit, not one of the twins. I didn't know they had an older sister. Elisabeth.
