Pentalogy.
Only thus far used for literary works, but I assume it can apply to movies as well: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentalogy

VR sounds more like what you were wanting. 3D just adds the Z-axis, but VR would give you the fully immersive experience. Maybe that's what's next on the horizon.Yeah... I was kinda hoping for something where they were flying through the floating land masses that it made you feel like you were flying through with them. A true immersive experience. Maybe the tech wasn't there yet for that and that's why he waited so long to make the five-ogy (no clue what 5 would be trilogized)
100% it's what's next. No question.VR sounds more like what you were wanting. 3D just adds the Z-axis, but VR would give you the fully immersive experience. Maybe that's what's next on the horizon.
I mean, the best way to see a movie is enhancedha! that's literally what I think of almost every time I think about 3D.
Yeah... it's definitely more 3D-in these days. I wish they did both.
Best thing I ever saw in 3D was a U2 concert in IMAX. It was INSANE how much it felt like you were literally five feet away from the stage. That said... my experience was "enhanced" at the time so that might have helped too.

It might be, but it'll be cost prohibitive for probably a decade or more.100% it's what's next. No question.
yep.... $50 movie tickets anyone? It might be, but it'll be cost prohibitive for probably a decade or more.
For a fully immersive VR version of Avatar 3? I'd probably seriously consider it.yep.... $50 movie tickets anyone?

People fork over double that for a football game or a concert. If it's entertaining enough, people will pay it.

Most of the VR experiences AMC/IMAX is testing are under 10min. Will be quite a jump to a 2hr movie. It won't be that much if the test theaters are any indication. Who knows.

Yeah and that's why I think it's still a good 10yrs away before becoming mainstream. A full tracking, high end, mobile VR headset is upwards of $800, but those will come down over time. It'll still be much pricier than the .50cent 3D glasses of today.Interesting to see how length would significantly raise costs. Hollywood might have to majorly increase budgets of shooting movies to accommodate this format.
I could see that raising costs. I would think the next highest cost would be maintenance of the equipment.
Either way they are not going to put a price point out there that isn't family friendly IMO. That is your bread and butter audience.
would basically be like giving you your toons perspective in Warcraft right?? everything on the horizon you are facing appears at a certain point, etc...in a cg world it shouldn't be that complicated....everyone in the theater would just need to plug into the same server right??...Yeah and that's why I think it's still a good 10yrs away before becoming mainstream. I don't know how much production cost will really go up as the entire environment would likely be cg. I could see the processing power needed to display movie length content being costly, although that too would come down over time.
Have any of you done the IMAX VR stuff yet? They have a center near me at The Grove. It's pretty damn fun. Each ones about five to ten minutes. The first person shooter games you are literally inside, but the best is EASILY The Walk.
It's an almost photo real VR of doing The Walk between the two towers. It looks and feels so real that it completely rewires your brain almost instantaneously. It took me over a minute to even take ONE step... even though I KNEW I was standing on the ground. It totally screws with your balance and goes a long way towards definitely proving "perception is reality". The guys who worked there were cackling watching my terror. I asked if my response was normal and they said mine was tame.
In awe of it, I made my friend do it so I could watch him and it was hilarious. The first time you do it it completely screws with your brain. The second time I did it, it was like my brain adjusted and I had no problem.
But that first time... man, what a weirdly awesome experience.
