I know of one person who actually successfully got himself removed from a list (and stayed off). Keep in mind, this was probably close to 10 years ago, I don't know if you can still pull this off.

Context: He has tried to get himself removed off lists before but it's never stuck. He was getting fed up and decided to escalate. The key (as he tells me) is to remain super calm and don't get angry.

He gets a call from a telemarketer. He was super calm, played along, answered a few questions. Nonchalantly, he asked what company the telemarketer worked for. Feigned interest in starting a career, claimed he was a good people person, yadda yadda yadda.

He got the name of the company, and found the name of the CEO and several other high ranking officials. This part I'm a bit hazy on, I believe he called the company (it was a Canadian company located in Montreal) itself and got the extension of said CEO and basically called her a couple times until they put him through.

He calmly stated that he does not appreciate being called for offers and would like them to stop. The CEO was pretty shocked and angry that he called her at work and just hung up on him. He called again the next day from a different phone and calmly stated that he called the day before about getting removed from ALL lists but did not get a chance to leave his name. Again, the CEO hung up on him in anger before any real conversation took place.

Now he took it to the final step, he somehow tracked down her home phone and address (I'm pretty sure from a phone book but i'm not sure). He calls her up that evening at home and again, calmly states his desire to be removed from the list. At this point the CEO capitulates, takes his details and he hasn't been on a list since (well, at least up until I last talked to him 3 years ago).

It's the stuff of legend within our circle of friends, and we love telling it to anyone who hasn't heard it. Like I said, I'm not sure you can pull this off these days, even back then he said he was super sketched out thinking he had gone too far.

That has "urban legend" written all over it.

I can ask my next door neighbor who knows a thing or two about this stuff. He is busy right now though getting his body shaved and fitted for his 27 inch shoes. Although I hate to bother him as he tends to grunt and growl much.

things like that do happen though. Last week I was trying to schedule flights for my family using $99 companion fares that have been marketed with an airline credit card. I have had the card for years but never used the fares.

After several days of calling the number (online reservations are not allowed with these) and getting a "we're too busy call back later" message (not even allowed to wait on hold), I searched online until I found the email address of an exec in charge of customer service. Someone had posted his email address on a group forum after he had followed up with them via email.

I sent a very terse email to him suggesting that his company was committing fraud by not allowing people to use the fares they market.

Within three hours and exec, not the one I emailed (turns out the email got bounced around a bit) called me and personally booked my flights for me.

I am still not sure about flying that airline again. I shouldn't have to hassle an exec to book flights.

heh, if I didn't personally know the guy I probably wouldn't believe it either. /shrug

I was just foolin.

Like 20 minutes after I posted that I had a telemarketer call my cell (which is supposed to be illegal), I asked them to take me off the list and before I could finish the sentence he hung up on me. About every 2 weeks I get a call from these people and each time its the same, I ask to be removed and get hung up on. Annoying.

If your friend really is Liam Neeson let him know I could use his particular set of skills.
