It was very average

How so?

The movie was supposed to turn the genre on its head and play with the conventions--filled with in-jokes, horror references and satirical elements--and it absolutely succeeded.

I think it's funny that the reason that a few people don't like the movie are the exact reasons the movie was made in the first place. In fact, I'd go further to say this isn't really a horror movie. It really wasn't that scary, but it was extremely clever and I loved the structure -- first half, Evil Dead 2 -- second half, taking horror cliches and just going nuts. When they push "the button" and the doors open--that starts one of the best action-horror sequences I've ever seen in a mainstream film.

Just didnt care for it. Entirely too cheesy. I didnt think it was awful but it certainly wasnt ground breaking and great by any means either. Just average.

There's a spot about halfway in between Shane and Chaplin - that's where I'm standing. I liked the movie but I really didn't think it went down a road that other spoof movies hadn't already travelled. It was good but not great. Of course, I don't know that I've ever seen a horror movie or a parody movie that I considered great.

Curious what your definition is of "above average" for this type of film. There are dozens and dozens of below average-to-average horror films out there, just wondering what you would consider to be above average. And don't say Exorcist because that's the best horror movie ever made. Even I know it's better than Cabin in the Woods. :D

dcr & I enjoyed it. I'm a huge Whedon fan (I know, y'all know that about me already), so the feel of the movie was a comfortable, well-known place for me. I can see people that aren't used to his style not enjoying it.

I called the Merman...but I think that was deliberate, as well.

To me one of the Whedon signature moments was at the end when they realize there is nothing they can do. I won't spoil it but you guys know what scene I am talking about.

I saw it expecting some crazy blow me away with originality and twists and turns that blow me away that I don't see coming, and I ended up laughing the majority of the way throw at the corniness and stupidity of the whole thing...

I will give that it is pretty original and when it comes to horror films original is king, but it is original because it just mixes up all the horror films that you see and combines them into one..

This.

Airplane!

I have no idea why I didn't consider Airplane (Airplane 2, Loaded Weapon etc) as parody movies but I didn't. So, it looks like I should have limited it to Horror movie parodies. There are some decent ones but none of them are great IMO. Cabin in the Woods is probably one of the best of them but it's no Airplane.

Loved this movie... And just when u think you've seen it all, it just goes ludicrous speed in act three.

MERMAN!!!

Also, not sure what people wanted as far as twists. I don't think there were really supposed to be all that many. I mean, the "twist" is pretty much gone by the time the title rolls. I think the movie was more twisted than twisty if that makes sense.

This!

And, Shane is a tool. :D

Evil Dead 2 probably comes closest for me. I don't know that you'd call it a parody though. It's more of a funny horror movie.

As far as Airplane type movies, you guys ever see Top Secret!? It's one of my favorites in the genre.

Oh sure, Val Kilmer. I've seen it several times. I like it but I'd have to put several spoof films above it (for my own tastes). I think my top 20 parody movie list would go something like this:

1a. Airplane
1b. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
1c. Princess Bride
2. Galaxy Quest
3. Blazing Saddles
4. Spaceballs
5. Young Frankenstein
6. Loaded Weapon
7. Airplane 2
8. Haunted House
9. Paul
10. Robin Hood: Men in Tights
11. Shaun of the Dead
12. Top Secret
13. Naked Gun
14. Scary Movie 3
15. Kentucky Fried Movie
16. Austin Powers : International Man of Mystery
17. Hot Shots
18. Scary Movie

That's off the top of my head, I'm sure someone will mention a great one I've forgotten.

Steve

Edit: I should have put Scream up there in the top 15 and The Cabin in the Woods not far below it.

Speaking of Val Kilmer, I loved Real Genius.

Agreed. I've heard all the bad things about him but as an actor, I really loved the guy and most of the movies he starred in. I know that The Saint is considered to be a weak movie but my wife and I watch it at least once a year. Put just about anyone else in that role and it's probably a one and done for us.

For those who didn't get the reference:

Fair warning, a couple of naughty words, but funny. IMO :)

evil dead/army of darkness imo are the best comedy horror movies ever.

I though evil dead was heavier on horror while darkness is heavier on comedy. Awesome movies.

Evil Dead 1 has virtually no comedy in it, while Army of Darkness have virtually no horror in it. Evil Dead 2, however, has copious amounts of both and is the far superior of all 3 movies, IMO. I mean, I don't think the other two even compete with 2.

2 was on TV a month or two ago and I was recording it and I wanted to just watch a little bit of the beginning but I couldn't stop watching. It is so inventive and funny.

I saw army of darkness first so it holds #1 in my book
