According to Adam Schefter, the NFL Networks' Chris Mortenson, the Cardinals love Alex Smith, and would like nothing better than if he would fall to us in the draft.

We seem to always draft someone from the previous Fiesta Bowl.

The report on NFL Network went on to illustrate how Smith in the draft, would put Warner in the same position he was in last year with the Giants.

How 'bout them apples?

I originally thought this was an unlikely possibility (still do to some degree). But the fact that Schefner raised it does improve the odds it could happen (Unlike too many other sports media guys, he doen't usually just pull these things out of his butt).

But, still, it's one media guy's speculation and should be kept in perspective. I stiill think who we take will depend on who's top on our board. But, if this year, Dennis is blowing smoke and plans to draft on need, he may be put in a position where we either gotta draft a CB, gotta draft a RB or gotta draft a LB.

Something just occurred to me, though: If the remaining things rumored and factual fall into place, we'd wind up with Hartwell, Mili and Bennett. That would leave our most pressing need cornerback (and to a lesser extent, NT). Then the likelihood of our drafting either A Smith or one of the corners would be increased.

Smith isn't anywhere near as NFL-ready as Eli, IMO. I think Warner's job this year is safe no matter what--probably even next year if he re-ups with us.

I like the idea of drafting Smith, but I really believe we need to get a CB or RB prior to the draft if that's to be the case.

....or, maybe not.

1. A. Smith, QB
2. M. Jackson, CB
3. Kayjay Harris, RB
3a. C. Komeatu, OG

With Shipp and Hambrick in the backfield with a guy like Harris learning the ropes we might be okay.

I'm all for it. Draft Smith if he's there.

Geez, I don't know.........

if we are in a position to draft a qb with the 8th pick. I can create a scenerio where it would make it okay.

Work out a trade with the Dolphins. Surtain for Shelton.

We have two big holes. CB and RB. As it stands right now, the only way to fill those needs would be with the 8th and 44th pick. If we were to take Smith at #8, it would mean we would have to wait until the 3rd round (#75) to fill one of our big needs.

Alot of teams Like Alex Smith, doesn't mean we'll get him. I'm sure the Cards liked Peyton Manning but knew we wouldn't get him.

Yes we could have, but we traded our #2 to San Diego for the write for Wadsworth. But the Bolts took Manning at # one. We still could have had The biggest bust ever in draft history if really were looking for a QB that year, Ryan Leaf. Remeber we put all our eggs in one basket with Jake Plummer back then. He did get us to the play-off that year. Then we over paid him and our good core players left the team via FA, or roster cuts. ie Jimmer Miller, Loamas Brown, Larry Centers, Mark Smith, Eric Swann got hurt worse, and a cast of other short-comings occured back then. Rob Moore torn-up his Knee in Minn. preseason game.

Back then I think that Ringling Brothers was adminstrating the Cards front Office.

All in all then is then and Now is Now. I'd rather have Now vs. Then.

Alex Smith is no Peyton Manning. Teams won't move up to get him, and there are only a couple of teams ahead of us that need/want a QB, IMO: SF and Miami. These teams also need a lot of other things. I think Miami goes RB.

I think it was Scouts Inc that said Smith was one of the most popular players at the combine because so many teams knew so little about him tha they were all "cramming" their info on him to get a feel.

I'd be VERY surprised if Green likes Smith that much he doesn't fit the "profile" that Green has traditionally gone for. He is a big, smart guy, but he doesn't have a big arm. Green took Culpepper but he has a big arm, Green is the guy who cut Gannon loose because he didn't like running QB's and he took Fiedler and helped him become a QB and not just a runner. I'd be very surprised if he takes a guy this high who runs like Smith.

He's a very intriguing prospect but I think most teams really want to see him throw and didn't get the chance to do so at the combine.

If the rumor is still there after his workouts I'll put a lot more stock in it.

We could not have gotten Peyton. He was selected # 1 by the Colts. The Bolts took Leaf @ #2.

We had the #2 and traded with the bolts to move down 1. We could've still had leaf if we were looking for a QB, or we could've tried to strike a deal w/ Indy for the #1. At the time though, Manning and Leaf looked pretty even, so if we were gonna draft a QB, it would've been considered wise to stay at #2 and grab Leaf.

Correct. I don't think we could have had a chance at Peyton - the cost would have been too high to get the #1 pick.

In hindsight Jake and our pick for their pick so we got Manning would have been a master stroke.

Of course in hindsight taking Moss or Woodson over Wadsworth would have been too since he got hurt. Moss was the best pick in that draft available to us but his character issues were such a concern you just knew we weren't going to take him.

Moss was my guy that year until I read a story about an on campus women's group at Marshall that had been picketing games and "pep rallies" because of alleged "incidents" with Moss and multiple women on campus. Just made me figure the guy would be in jail before he was in the Pro Bowl, that's when I jumped on the draft Wadsworth bandwagon with everyone else.

I was ecstatic when we drafted Andre.

*sigh*

I was just trying to point out that Bobcat said we could have drafted Peyton, when in reality, we couldn't because he was the #1 pick that year. Leaf was #2.

So...if they did draft Smith....what would the QB situation be?? I'd rather see Josh get dropped and keep John N. on the roster if we had to have 3 QB's...or would we actually keep 4??

If we took Manning, I'd give 3-1 odds that he wouldn't be playing for the Cards now. There would have been no triplets on the Cardinals, they wouldn't have extended his contract, etc. etc. If they drafted a Manning-esque player now, I have a bit more faith.

We traded with the Bolts. We wanted Wadsworth so bad and The Bolts wanted either Manning or leaf. In those days Wadesworth was the next Bruce Smith. We origianally had the # 2 pick in the draft that year. If anything we didn't want any team to trade with the Packers who really also wanted Wadsworth. So we traded our #2 to the Bolts for their #3 andwe got other addtional draft choices and Metcaf. (sp)

I really don't see what youy guys see in Payton Manning. When it comes to the short Hairs he is not a money QB. He is not a Troy A. from Dallas, Joe Montana From San fran. or Tom Brady from NE.

P. Manning so far is not a true Money QB like the ones listed above. Sets all Kinda records, but when it come down to winning the big one he seems to lack the true Heart of a Champion; well at least in the NFL.

Money players our like, Roger Clemmens, Kurt Schilling, Whitty Ford, Tom Brady, Joe Montana. Those type of guy's, you know Reggie Jackson types.

Payton hasn't reached that Level of performance as you yet. More like to a lesser degree, a Jim Kelly of the Bills. Great QB, but no cigar.

I'd be shocked if G&G went QB with the 8. Here's why;
1. How many times in Minnesota did Green draft a QB the first day? I honestly don't know the answer to the question but I'm guessing the answer is ONCE. More often than not he fixed the QB position in free agency. He's done that w/ Warner.
2. G&G clearly have an interest in McCown as evidenced by the maximum tender AND, Green saw enough in Navarre to allow him to start in his rookie season, I think he's got his development projects in house already.
3. Green wanted improvement on the O-line, he addressed it. He wanted production from the QB, he addressed it. He wanted pressure on the QB, he addressed it. He does'nt seem to hard to figure out. He wants an explosive running game and he's gonna address it with the 8th pick. I think it's a slam dunk that he takes one of the top 3 unless they're all gone then your guess is a good as mine.

I want him to, but we have to wait and see how cuts, trades and FA signings pan out. If we pick up and extra pick in the draft then I don't see how we can pass on him. However, if we still need a CB and RB, then they are more important right now.

So many things can happen between now and draft day.
Who knows if we trade Shelton for a second round pick , it would give us 2 second round and 2 third round picks.
That scenario could allow us to package a second and a third to acquire another late 1st rounder to get the rb/cb we want and use our other 2nd rounder to get the cb/rb we want.
This would allow us to take Smith at #8.

It would be a more likely reach that if DG wanted a Project QB he would take Campbell or McPherson in the second. If we traded LJ for Tampa's 2nd I could see RB at #8, CB at #36 & QB at #44. I just don't see him thinking QB of the future right now. I think he mortages the future on one of the three (Warner, Josh or Navarr) becoming the guy and one of them going away next year and then bring in a project.

Warner is only 33, if he has a good year he can be serviceable for the next 3-4 years. He missed a lot of time before playing in the NFL. We can always wait and try to grab a QB next year. Someone named Leinart.
