The Cardinals first pick in the 2013 draft should be?

That doesn't make sense to me. For argument's sake, let's say the Cards have Smith, or any QB, rated 25th. Why would they take him 7th? I could see if they had him rated about 10-12, then they are factoring in need. But taking a guy rated that low at 7 is a bad idea.
Because QB is the single most important position on an NFL team and thus is a position that you will always see teams reach to get them. Also who is to say that Smith wouldn't be top ten on the Cardinals list? He's top ten on a few sports sites that I have seen.

Right now, Chance Warmack has to be the pick. Best player at his position, better prospect than David DeCastro, fills a position of huge need and improves both the running game and the passing game. End of story. The only other position that deserves a consideration over OG is QB IMO.

For those advocating an OT, look at what Hoyer did vs. San Fran yesterday. A QB with a quick release will make Levi Brown, Nate Potter and Bobby Massie better. A top OG not only helps against the interior pass rush and blitz pickup, but it also helps with the run game which might take our offense the futherest.

I disagree Chopper

what Kapernick did yesterday was not a function of a quick release

it was a function of excellent protection -- all the "big" passes were enabled by the protection allowing those routes to develop (and a QB that moved to buy a bit more time as well)

Don't disagree with the need at Guard, but Matt Kalil has played a big role in upgrading Minnesota's offense IMO.

Just get a good player who can line up where he's supposed to fairly early in the season and play.

I'd be happy with Warmack, Te'O, a pass rusher, Joeckel.

I don't think there's a QB I'd take that high, the bit I've seen of Geno Smith is really hard to judge so I don't have a good opinion on him. We 100% need a QB but I have no idea right now who it would be which is why I'm fully on board with bringing back Kolb, at a large cut in pay. Then we need 2 others, one should be FA, one should be drafted.

My point was how Hoyer managed the San Fran pass rush effectively despite having Batiste at LT.

Don't worry. That is not going to happen. It better not. I hope it doesn't. They couldn't take him. Could they? They did draft Levi Brown and Barkley fills a need. Barkley was the #1 prospect to start the season. Maybe they take him. It's not out of the realm of possibility they take him. Barkley says he played injured. Barkley wows on the chalkboard at the combine. Whiz and Grimm work out Barkley individually. Barkley shows moxie. With the 7th pick Arizona selects Matt Barkley, QB USC.

I just woke up in a cold sweat from a nightmare I just had about the Cardinals selecting Matt Barkley at #7. Keep teeling self, it was only a nightmare , it was only a nightmare.

True, but the Vikings did not have a decent OT in Levi Brown coming off IR OR a young, athletic OT going into his 2nd year with decent starting film. I'm not saying the Cardinals OTs aren't upgradable, but I am saying the NFL is about resource management and using our limited offseason resources to upgrade our most talented OL position is not smart. I'm not opposed to upgrading the offensive line, I just think those resources should be used to upgrade the weakest part which is the interior line not the tackles.

No, but it was a function of a guy with plus mobility, limited exposure on film, and an innovative and dynamic offensive system. None of which we currently have.

Also, it helps that we lack a good pass rusher who can consistently win one-on-one matchups.

I'm on the Geno Smith bandwagon if he's there. Maybe Matt Barkley.

I am on to Tyler Wilson if he is there. I am definitely onto a QB no matter who we take. How can we possible not look for a QB? Looking at the three we have now we will have a repeat of this year. The most important position on a team and we have three that could not even play backup for most teams. We are also desperate for a RB which you can often find in the lower rounds. Send Beenie packing as he was not doing anything and then opened his mouth rather wide.

We have to be looking at a QB but that's no reason to overpay. If a QB grades out at or near the position we draft, we need to go there but otherwise, BPA. We're in a deep hole right now. Drafting a 2nd or 3rd round talent early in the first round simply because we need a QB is a losing proposition.

Wilson or Murray at QB by trading into the late 1st round to make sure we get our choice of QB and with the 1st pick...take the best OL unless Te'o is there at 7, I would seriously consider him. I would also pursue WR Goodwin from UT with my 4th pick (true speed at the WR position).

Some people use the philosophy of BPA in the draft. That may be OK but the position of QB is such an overriding position that you may be forced to fill that position even though there may be players at other positions that grade out better. It is a position that is the most dominant difference maker on any team. You can pass on for a player who grades out better for a QB. If all the QBs are duds then you could make the case for BPA but not in our case. We have ZIP, Zero, Nada, at QB. We are doomed to the depths of the NFL until we fill that position. A good QB can add a ton of offense to this team. The best offensive lineman in the draft can not add more than 1-2 wins if that. Look what Manning, RGIII, Luck, and others have done for there teams this year. There will be 3 or more QBs go in round 1 in April and we better take one. I want Wilson but will gladly settle for one of the other two as you never know who is going to turn into a great QB. If I had the first pick in the draft I would still take a QB. If I saw one I liked I would trade up like Washington did for RGIII who has taken Washington to the playoffs. You have to be proactive in your pursuit for a QB. I sometimes wonder did we really go all out to get Manning. Can you overpay for a QB of the future or the next 3-4 years? Not if you want to go to a Superbowl.

Well I can understand QB, but really I want a Left OT. Then a Right OT. Then a couple of guards, and possibly a center. Will be okay if we address QB, OT, and one other lineman (tackle or guard) with first three picks.

If we can fill any of this beforehand through FA, then great. But not counting FA in the mix, that's what I'd do unless someone godly fell to us at a different position.

I am against using either of our 1st 2 picks on a QB. We need to strengthen our OL and create a true running game. You do that with two good OGs and dependable RB. We can get all of that with our top few picks, rather than draft a rookie QB and watch our coach play roulette with our QBs for the next 2 or 3 yrs again. I am sick of that. Just trade for Alex Smith and be done with it. Then we can go forward.

I agree about the Oline. Build a good Oline and just about any QB can look at least decent for you. Not to mention our running game was also in shambles last year.

One thing that has me nervous is that a new GM may be obliged "to prove how good a wheeler dealer he is" and make dumb trades on Draft Day just for the sake of trading.

Obviously I'm just speculating, but I've always had the nagging suspicion that this what happened when Graves traded out of Suggs territory so that we wound up with Calvin and BJ. I suspect that this was Rod's first year in the position and he wanted to demonstrate to Card ownership that they hired a guy who could do deals with the best of them.

The time to trade is when you're certain it can help your football team & not because it makes you look cool. I hope our new GM gets this.

Starting to agree about Warmack.Still like Joeckel better.I figure Cards can`t go wrong with either one.Don`t want Geno Smith in AZ except carrying the clipboard for another team.

Wrong. The quarterback makes the OL look good. The OL makes the running back look good (with an exception like Adrian Peterson proving the rule).

I like Warmack if he is available. If not I would hope a good pass rushing OLB is available.

So if the QB gets more time to throw that isn't going to make them look better? Also a good running game isn't going to help the QB either?
