Garth:

In response to a caller, McGinnis reminded everyone that they don't typically gameplan preseason games, but are more interested in running specific plays and evaluating specific players. The caller's question was how the Cards planned to defend against Kordell Stewart's running ability, and Mac said they they wouldn't be using spies or any special coverages as they would in the regular season.

Good to remember how vanilla offenses and defenses often are in preseason, and how little the results of these games matter in terms of the regular season.

What do you guys think of Coach Mac as a coach? I really don't have much use for him.

Mac is a motivator, and that's what bad teams need. He's a great coach, he just needs help. Here's something to chew on: Coach Mac is in the last year of his contract. Assuming the Cardinals finish 8-8 or better, he might get some awesome job offers from other teams (Seahawks, Miami, Chiefs- Vermeil's contract is over in 2004 and he's hinting that he'll retire again, etc.) If the Cardinals have a winning record by the 8th game of the season, they should extend his contract, or be might bail!

Mac has 2003 and 2004 remaining on his contract.

This is the 2004 season, but after searching the internet, I think you're right.

That's strange, because when I searched the internet I found that it was the 1977 season.

Jim,

Why do the Ask Coach Mac e-mails get delivered to your inbox?

Does that mean you decide who gets to have their questions answered or not?

Yes. I get to play God.

If Coach Mac saw some of the emails that I get for him, he would lose all hope for humanity.

There are some doozies.

I kind of like Mac as a coach, but he has some huge improvements to make before I'm sold on him. Thus far in his reign, his clock management has been abysmal, the playcalling has been utterly predictable, the defense has lacked a killer instinct and tackling seems to be out of fashion.

On the plus side, he's a master motivator that could get a corpse fired up. He's a young coach, so his clock managment should get better. The playcalling (I hope!) was the fault of the O-Coordinator, and the defense supposedly has a killer instinct now. I hope he turns this around this season, but if he doesn't fix these deficiencies this year, he should be gone.

This I agree with. In my thirty years watching NFL football, all the points you mentioned have been very apparent under Coach Mac. Most notably the "predictability". This has got to change.

The Cards always seem to be 5-7 years behind the rest of the NFL as to how it pertains to "trends". When was the last time the Cardinals actually started something "new" with their offensive philosophy in the league? NEVER! We need a high-powered, high-octane offense pulling out all the stops in this NFC West, and to wreck havoc on the rest of the league.

Predictability gets you field goals and 4-12 seasons. This team needs to score 24-31 points per game to win like most other NFL teams need to. I'm still not sold on the notion that it's always been a "talent" problem in Arizona over the years. I'm now thinking it may be more of a coaching/philosiphy problem. We always get "has-been" coaches. Buddy Ryan, Vince Tobin...please. Look at ASU. Fresh, new coach with newer play-calling skills. There's some of those guys in the NFL too. Why can't the Cards ever get "lucky" and wind up with one of those guys?

I love Mac, and I still believe he has what it takes to get us over the hump! But let's see some unpredictability this year, and score some freakin' touchdowns already! Light this league up Coach! Let's be the surprise team this year! :)

You sir have hit the nail on the head!

The Cards best years were with a young upstart by the name of Don Coryll. Of course Bidwill eventually screwed that up and Coryl went on to the Chargers.
