Did you think it felt long or did the story move along for you? I've watched it thrice and didnt think it was long either time.

What did you think of Jack? Some bag on his performance as cashing a paycheck, but I liked 'em.

I didn't feel it was long either. I just felt that it ended abruptly.

It felt long to me for two reasons (neither of which have to do with the pacing of the film): I started watching it at 9:30, expecting I'd be asleep by 11:30 or so, and the disc got stuck at one point so I tok it out, wiped it clean and put it back in and looked for the scene I was on. Well, I'd been watching for about an hour or s, so I went directly to scenes about 2/3 of the way through...they didn't look familiar. So, I went to scenes about 1/2 way through. They didn't look familiar. I found my scene near the beginning. That made me realize early on that I was in for a long night.

I use Jack's "I smell a rat" line all the time.

What a stupid freaking movie. Seriously...why are they making this tripe? I know you are joking, but the only way this movie would be remotely watchable is if Rocky gets his ass thoroughly pounded until he dies in the ring. Stupidest idea ever, yet tons of people will go watch it. Masses of asses.

no one's going to go see that movie unless they're going for a joke. it's gonna be DOA the second it hits the theaters, just like Rocky V.

Just watched The Departed tonight, though I did go see Rocky in the theatre, so I guess I am one of the asses of which you speak. I'm okay with that though cause I left feeling great and full of hope after Rocky. The Departed left me feeling like humanity is hopeless. And that's okay because they are different types of movies and meant to stir up different emotions. I was just hoping for something different.

Funny, I liked it up until the last ten minutes. And the love interest part of the story was ridiculously bad. I don't think it deserved best picture.

The cast was excellent, but the story lost me at the end.

That's kinda how I felt. The love connection thing was bogus. I loved the movie up until the last few minutes. Everyone died. Whop dee do.

The movie was good and the acting was great (I have never hated Matt Damon so much). I just felt like everyone was corrupt and nothing was truly resolved. Everyone died ... hooray, movie!

I finally saw this a couple of months ago.

I liked it, right up to the point when Marky Mark opens his mouth. The dialogue of this film, and the interplay between the cops, sunk it for me.

And don't get me started on the failure of it both thematically, and plot-wise.

I rarely say this, but this film was stupid. I couldn't believe I was watching a Scorsese movie.

I rewatched it after 13 years and thought it held up great; one of his best (just below Goodfellas and Raging Bull of course).

The director and cast gave it unrealistic expectations. There’s some noticeable plot holes but it’s a great film.

it's fun, but I think the biggest problem with the movie is that Nicholson just sucks in it. Also, feels like Marty a little on autopilot, covering the same ground he has, only with nothing new to say about it.

as opposed to The Irishman. That was him going back to the well, but it was such a different elegiac experience. A movie all about regret for the horrors of lives lived on the wrong side of the law.

this just felt like popcorn fluff from Marty. Fun, a couple great performances, twists I didn't care about and ultimately, kinda disposable.

while I completely agree with the first half of your post, I thought last year had some exceptional films that were deserving of higher honors than a Scorcese movie on auto-pilot.

Out of all of Scorcese's films, IMO Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, After Hours (severly under-appreciated IMO), Casino, The Aviator, and even The Color of Money were vastly superior films to The Departed and even those that weren't as successful were still more ambitious, if that makes any sense.

Scorsese has done so many great movies, that one is 2nd to Raging Bull in my list of his best -- although it's pretty even with Goodfellas.

If you can get past Judas having a New York accent, it's a spectacular film.

I know I am in the minority but I really dislike this style of film. I have had similar issues about the "bleakness of humanity" like No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood.

After Hours is definitely a MASSIVE detour from Scorcese's filmography, but it's still mesmerizing. One of the best of the "one crazy day" genre of movies that I love.

I love the "one crazy day" genre. One of my favorites has to be Three O'Clock High. Stumbled upon that one in the early 90's.

Just saw this for the first time. Wow.

(I had a 1-year old when it originally came out on the theaters, so there was a bit of a gap in my moviegoing experience.)
