When it comes to the #2 WR, Andre Roberts, imo, doesn't pass the eye ball test. Doesn't seem big enough. I know the coaches seem to like him and he'll probably start the season, opposite Larry, and I wouldn't mind being wrong on this. The team gave Stephen Williams a lot of chances in the GB game, with mixed results. ED seems like a #3 slot guy, and if he can stay healthy, should do well in that role. The guy who looks like a #2, if not this year, then down the road, is DeMarco Sampson. Seems to have the size, speed, and hands to be a VG WR. I'm not sure how well he runs routes, and maybe someone with more football knowledge than I have, will give me their take. Another guy who seems to have all the attributes is Isaiah Williams. Just haven't seen enough of him. Thanks.

Well AR works hard, and is an asset to the team, If He can stretch the field for Larry He can do the job, He is not there yet but getting closer.

I think Early is good, but Fitz needs some speedy #2 or slot to balance him and Heap.

But Beanie beating the hell out of defense will slow them down as fast as anything!

Steve Smith of the Panthers never passed the eye ball test either -- he turned out fine. I do think that Sampson has the potential to grow into the #2 receiver role though, and definitely still hope for Stephen Williams to develop into a playmaking threat.

Luckily the "eyeball test" has zero indicator on how well they will play, or there would be a lot of quality WR's on the south side of 6 feet tall without a job right now.

Doesnt pass the eyeball test because he's not tall enough? This falls in line with the same silly argument that Daryl Washington will not succeed as a WILB because he lacks the ideal size. Again, many players succeed despite lacking the "ideal" physical features. Steve Smith is 5'9" and is one of the better wideouts in the league. Roberts is 5'11"

I've seen Roberts with my own eyeballs. He's not capable of being a #1, but is a good compliment to Fitz when he is triple teamed. He catches the ball well, has very good speed and runs clean routes. In the last game, he took a 5 yard reception and turned it into a 17 yard gain. Why? He stopped, let the defender pass him by and scampered on the sideline before being pushed out.

And if he doesnt work out, we have a handful of receivers that can fill in. Doucet, Sampson, S. Will. All look good.

Wideout is the least of my concerns because, IMO, we are 5 deep at the position.

We don't need an established #2 wide receiver if #3,4,5,6 are all good.

All I have to say is Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Roberts, Early Doucet, Todd Heap, Rob Housler, and Demarco Sampson. All of those guys look to be good receivers.

Look at Green Bay's model: Greg Jennings and everyone else. Seems to work very well.

I agree. I mean, we all want to see another #1 as our #2, and I don't think we should give up on that if the opportunity arises. But there are a lot of people in that list who can catch the ball.

Housler has the size and the speed to be a WR... seems to have pretty good hands too...why not try him? Big body, speed and good hands....seems to be the "eyeball' characteristic that is floating here

What the Cards missed last season were the tough catches that Boldin used to make. And he was also great at what is called the throw short run long passing game.

I know I've posted this before but I'm really HOPING that Heap and Housler can bring back to the Cards offense that part of the passing attack that Boldin took with him to Baltimore.

Would be cool to get another GAM but guys like Boldin don't grow on Cactus.

WR is the least of my concerns.

Depth at RB

O-Line

SS

LB

Pass rush

Now those are some concerns!

What are the eyeballs supposed to detect?

In other words, what's your "job description" for your no. 2 receiver?

Should he be taller or faster than your no. 1? A better route runner? A burner? A posession-type? What?

Unless all our eyeballs are on the same page, there cannot be a universally accepted "eyeball.test."

You are SO right. A bonofide threat at TE forces the defense to keep it honest. If Kolb can show the ability to pick up his second and third options , this offense will be fine.

Could be the Cards version of Jermichael Finley...a mismatch beast.

I hate Jermichael Finley! If that Jackleg had stayed in school Texas might have two more National Championships and while he should have been getting ready to help UT beat Alabama he's catching 6 passes for 159 yards against the Cards in the playoffs.

I'm not even worried about the offense to be honest. They won't suck as bad as last year, and improvement is all I ask for. What concerns me the most is our defensive pressure, or lack thereof. Our offensive line also sucks. Those 2 things limit how far we can go.

A lot of good answers. The eyeball test reminds me of the judge who was asked what porn was. He said he couldn't describe it, but would know it if he saw it. I guess my point was that by next year, DeMarco will be the second best WR on the team. I'm assuming that the WR group doesn't change, and naturally that's just my opinion, which is also subject to change.

I think DeMarco may be our 2nd best WR THIS year. He's the guy, if I'm not mistaken, who stayed with Fitz in the offseason at his house and worked out with all the athletes. Good character guy according to Fitz and has shown some flashes in camp and games. I'm pretty high on this dude.

I think we were awfully spoiled with Quan as our "#2". Let's not forget he was our #1, and a legit #1, prior to lucking into one of the greatest WR to ever play the game.

Well when everyone else was Donald Driver and Jermichael Finley it sure made it easier. 2,850 yards and 15 TDs in 2009 for the 3 of them.

But that ain't nothin' compared to what Fitz,Boldin and little Stevie did in 2008. 3,475 yards and 26 TDs. Then there's Fitz &Q. Together they rang up 13,210 receiving yards and 95 TDs. They averaged almost what the 3 GB guys did in '09

I just love to look back at things like that.
