It's way too simplistic to look at Josh Byrnes and say "he sucks and he's the problem". Has he done everything right? No but I understand the moves he made. Lets look at the big ones.

Chris Young for Javy Vasquez - even with Young slumpng this was a brilliant trade. Even though 82 will cringe as he reads this he is still one of the "core" players on this team. Plays great D in the 3rd most important defensive position and I belive if he is not moved up and down the lineup he will be a steady guy at the plate too. Great move.

Signing Eric Byrnes for 3 years 30 million - I don't blame Josh Byrnes for this move as much as I do you guys (or the fanbase in general). He is a young first time GM and I chock this one up to learning. I remember during 2006 when the "fans" were frothing over Eric and how great he is. Lets face it. The FO has to keep in mind what the fans want when buidling this team. And every man woman and grandma was inlove with Eric at the time. If you look at the type of player EB is he doesn't fit the protype of what J. Byrnes wants out of a outfielder. So likely with an edict from the execs he handed over this contract. Probably the biggest mistake over his tenure for two big reason...

Quentin for Cris Carter (packaged for Haren) - Ok. This one hurts. But if you can say you saw this coming the way it did you are kidding yourself. At the time Jackson and Quentin were comprable prospects but Quentin was more injury prone, mentally softer, and playing a positon we had in surplus. And most importantly is the last point. If Byrnes hadn't signed E. Byrnes then this would have never happened. And I believe firmly he felt both internal and external pressure to do that. You can say "well the buck stops with him" which is true but if this was a fanbase that turned out win or lose he could make only baseball decisions. But I digress. No one knew what we had in Quentin and at the time it made sense if E. Byrnes was going to be on the team for 3 years.

Carter, Gonzalez, and young pitcher for Haren - Slam dunk. At this point with Webbys shoulder issues I would rather have Haren. This trade set the franchise up for years. Not to mention the cheap extension he signed him too.

Used up parts and Micah Owings for Adam Dunn - To this day I still love this deal. They had to be aggressive and this was a good move. Man Ram was just a better one. I still wish they had signed Dunn to a minimal 3 year deal.

Valverde for Qualls, Burke and young arm - This trade looked poor last year when all these guys sucked and Valverde pitched well. But it looks like we got rid of Grande only a year early as he has fallen apart (cough cough juice) and Qualls is now the closer. So we can call this one a wash.

He drafted Scherzer, Parker, and Schlereth. Those are the arms of the future. He signed Doug Davis who has been underatted for us. He brought RJ back and got something out of him. Garland looks like another coup. He even admitted when he messed up and got Tony Clark back.

The Eric Byrnes money 2 years ago should have gone to Hudson and I would have kept Dunn. And obviously knowing what I know now I would have gotten Carter without losing Quentin. IIRC Melvin was never his guy so thats not his fault either and had to live with after 2007.

But Byrnes is a good GM and even the best like Beane and Epstien have made their mistakes - especially in their youth. I say this because I have read many posters who want to do away with Byrnes. I want to know why. To me he has made his mistakes but with time and more of a bank roll I think he is going to be a future star.

Lets see what happens with Hinch before we decide to start a mutiny. THAT will be the move that defines his tenure with the Dbacks.

IMO he is STILL the best thing the organization has going for it. Except for Upton. :)

In terms of the "moves" Byrnes has made, I think as GM's go he's done about average to slightly better than average. No GM is gonna be perfect. Some moves work, some don't... Josh has gotten more right than wrong, Quentin notwithstanding...

However, if the rumors are true that he has grossly overly involved in running the team on the field, making the lineup, etc... that is simply WRONG and will lead to sustained failure. It usurps the leadership and ability for a manager to earn respect and place his stamp on the team.
Hinch will struggle... Hale would struggle... Melvin did struggle in this environment...

Now, hearing Young referenced as the "core" of this team makes me feel queezy...

I have no issue with the moves he has made on the player side. I fault him for not one so far. I have faith that Young can come around. Honestly, there are few here that pimped Quentin since day 1 and they were right, but not everyone can be right every time. I do have issue with his meddling with the line up. I really feel that manager should manage and if he does not let Hinch manage, then he needs to go. If it all works out then great. I am skeptical, but I am not paid to make the decisions, so I give him time.

I don't think the Haren deal is a slam dunk at all.

You add a guy like that in a move like that if you think you are ready to contend. Since the trade they have not been very good (though no fault of Haren's).

In the process they pretty much gutted the farm system, signed Haren to an extension when he's never proven that he can excel for a full season, and raised expectations when maybe they should not have been.

It wasn't a bad trade, they got good value. But it's not a slam dunk.

They thought they were ready to contend... They extended Byrnes... Young... :bang:

Drew can't stay healthy.... Upton has taken a bit longer to progress... Snyder can't hit his weight...

Must have missed the anti-Young thread. Anyone who was compared to Willie Mays deserves a chance. I mean the guy hit 30 HR's and swiped 30 bags his rookie season.

Let these young guys play, that's what Byrnes and Hinch need to do. Let them play through their struggles. Snyder's always been bad. Chalk that up as a Byrnes mistake as well.

But with Byrnes, I think he will make a fine GM someday, but right now he's in the learning process. Give him time and the DBacks organization will be fine. DBacks fans are expecting to win the West and go deep into the playoffs but keep in mind, we lost our ace to start the season, some of our young core players are slumping and we just had a managerial change. Give it 30-40 games before you start jumping on bandwagons...

"Willie Mays??" Wow.... just, wow....

How much time does Young get? This is his 4th season in the bigs. How many more years are you willing to cripple the team for a guy who was (can't stop laughing right now....) once compared to Willie Mays??

Umm.......huh? Its Justin Upton thats continually been compared to Willie Mays, not Chris Young. Chris Young was/is projected to be a Mike Cameron type.

...Gotta say two things..

1. The Quinton trade may go down as one of the all time worst trades in MLB history, and with the Dbacks struggling sooo much on offense, it hurts that much more...

2. Trading for Dunn, I agree was a good thing, not signing him and NOT EVEN TAGGING HIM TO GET A COUPLE DRAFT PICKS, is ridiculous, and simplyu maddening...

The bottom line is I for the most part have been hapy with Byrnes, but the reailty it, the Dbacks are BY FAR the worst offensive team in the MLB, and very wll could make history this year for worst offense perhaps ever... and that makes me sick... SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE!!!

I have never been a big fan of Josh Byrnes. The Q trade was the beginning of some dumb transactions. Signing an unproven Young to a big contract was another. Also signing Snyder and not re-signing Dunn was yet another.

I'm glad he fired Melvin but hiring a guy who has never managed in his life to four years is a big risk. If the rumors are true that Josh is making the line-up decisions, then this hiring makes sense. AJ is just JB's puppet.

I believe it's time to make moves. Trade Tracy, Davis and CoJack and hope to get some good prospects. Those three are not going to flourish with the Diamondbacks. I doubt any team would trade for him but shop Eric Byrnes, even though he has a no-trade clause.

Josh Byrnes is an idiot.
Even worse, he's narcissistic.

Idiots are too simple minded to hang on for long. Egotists know how to amass power.

A 4-year managerial contract to a totally unproven manager, because he's even more passive than his predecessor.

It's painful to listen to the same sleep-inducing, everything is a "little" problem personality in a new manager.

The resemblance is uncanny. In Josh Byrnes world, evidently the more things change, the more they remain the same.

First off, there is no "tag" in baseball. You offer arbitration... D'backs management knew that free agency was going to be down because of the downturn in the economy. Dunn would have likely gotten 10 million plus in arbitration so they took the calculated risk of not offering arbitration. However it appeared that they had little interest in serious contact negotiations, I don't recall them even offering him a contact. The D'backs opened the books to push for the playoffs last season and failed, so it impacted our approach for this season.

Dunn's offense is handy, but he also strikes out way too much.... something we have a plethora of on this team.

Yep, Dunn would have made around $15M in arbitration and according to the Washington Post he wanted over $50M for four years before he realized that the market for him just wasn't very strong. Before he became a free agent the Diamondbacks actually did offer him a two year deal for $20M total, but he apparently rejected it really quickly. He wound up only getting the same 2 years and $20M from the Nationals. Of course, had Dunn accepted the Diamondbacks offer then they wouldn't have had the cash to sign Jon Garland, meaning we'd have only two guys right now capable of throwing more than six innings in a game. All in all I'd rather have Dunn than Garland, but that sort of pitching sure isn't a recipe for success.

A strikeout is recorded as an out, that's it. Dunn's offensive numbers are better than any power hitter the Diamondbacks have. Here are his stats so far this year:

OBP:.433
SLG:.595
OPS:1.028

Here are Mark Reynolds' stats so far this year:
OBP:338
SLG:.488
OPS:.826

Here are Justin Upton's stas. His are more comparable with Dunn. I would of loved to see Dunn hitting behind Upton this year.
OBP:.394
SLG:.595
OPS:.989

This team would be much better offensively with Dunn than without him. His defense would be a minus but it's not like the Diamondbacks have a gold glover at first.

How ironic it is that after the all the moaning and b*tching I did last year about Upton being a classic #3 hitter and Reynolds a classic #5, it finally happened . . . with Drew batting cleanup. :bang:
