Shyamalan's Script is Happening at Fox
Source: Variety
March 7, 2007

20th Century Fox has given the green light to M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening, a spec script thriller that Shyamalan wrote and will direct in Philadelphia this August. Variety says Fox is targeting a June, 2008 release for the film.

Shyamalan will produce with Sam Mercer. He also reunites with Munich producer Barry Mendel, who produced the Shyamalan-directed The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable.

The film, previously known as "The Green Effect," will mark Shyamalan's first R-rated effort, is a paranoid thriller about a family on the run from a natural crisis that presents a large-scale threat to humanity.

The movie is expected to carry a budget of around $57 million, and Shyamalan expects to cast a big male star for the lead.

Shyamalan will prepare and shoot The Happening as he continues to write the script for Avatar: The Last Airbender. Shyamalan will follow with that live action film for Paramount.

Shymalan is not a great movie maker, IMO, but he is an excellent story teller, and that covers all his other faults. Can't wait to see it.

The Happening

Release Date: June 13, 2008
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Screenwriter: M. Night Shyamalan
Genre: Thriller
MPAA Rating: R (for violent and disturbing images)
Website: The Happening

Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel, John Leguizamo, Betty Buckley, Spencer Breslin, Ashlyn Sanchez

Plot Summary: From director M. Night Shyamalan ("The Sixth Sense," "Signs") comes a lightning-paced, heart-pounding paranoid thriller about a family on the run from an inexplicable and unstoppable event that threatens not only humankind... but the most basic human instinct of them all: survival.

It begins with no clear warning. It seems to come out of nowhere. In a matter of minutes, episodes of strange, chilling deaths that defy reason and boggle the mind in their shocking destructiveness, erupt in major American cities. What is causing this sudden, total breakdown of human behavior? Is it some kind of new terrorist attack, an experiment gone wrong, a diabolical toxic weapon, an out-of-control virus? Is it being transmitted by air, by water... how?

For Philadelphia high school science teacher Elliot Moore (Wahlberg) what matters most is finding a way to escape the mysterious and deadly phenomenon. Though he and his wife Alma (Deschanel) are in the midst of a marital crisis, they hit the road, first by train, then by car, with Elliot's math teacher friend Julian (Leguizamo) and his 8 year-old daughter Jess ( Sanchez), heading for the Pennsylvania farmlands where they hope they'll be out of reach of the grisly, ever-growing attacks. Yet it soon becomes clear that no one - and nowhere - is safe. This terrifying, invisible killer cannot be outrun. It is only when Elliot begins to discover the true nature of what is lurking out there - and just what has unleashed this force that threatens the future of humanity -- that he discovers a sliver of hope that his fragile family might be able to escape what is happening.

M. Night Shamalamdingdong has disappointed me the last few times I've seen his movies. My wife really wants to see this, so I guess we will be going. It had better be good... Looks decent. Don't eff it up M.

I think it looks pretty good. It won't be up to par with Sixth Sense, but what movie is these days. This movie definitely looks watchable. Saw the preview during the LA/BOS game last night.

In honor of the movie opening this weekend, lets reflect on how far Mark Walberg has come.

I am so disappointed with this movie it is not even funny. I really liked the Sixth Sense, Signs and the Village. I thnk this is really going to hurt his name for up coming movies that he makes.

Sixth Sense was killer, but that's about it for me. I haven't seen Unbreakable, but Signs, the Village, and Lady in the Water were completely underwhelming for me. Signs was 'meh', I figured the Village out almost immediately (too simplistic for me), and I found I just didn't care about Lady in the Water--fell asleep, in fact. I'll pass on the Happening, thanks.

M. Knight makes movies about slightly flawed people challenged by the unknown. He (properly) focuses on the people and the challenge and uses the unknown as the backdrop. Unfortunately, he tries too hard at the storytelling some of the time, but I always appreciate his movies in the sense that he's telling stories and not trying to throw up some eye candy under the guise of making movies.
