I come back to not using the first string enough in preseason. Also the Cards played mostly vanilla defense, how could new players adjust? You can't adjust in practice. Allen Iverson was right about that.

The Cards needed to play zone, but they looked tentative. Zone requires quick threat response but the Cards were clearly confused about who had what responsibility. Taking the time to analyze not just react is typically fatal. Not surprising that Williams missed a hand signal with all the distractions. Still the Cards aren't the first team to have to play with a weak corner. I do agree a vet likely doesn't miss that signal.

Finally this zone or any zone looks better when you pressure the passer. The Cards must accomplish that with their front 7. Golden continues to show effort but not success. The D-line failed to collapse the pocket with any regularity. Jones had a play or two but mostly was neutralized by a tight end. I suspect BB knew he could do that. Mostly Jones looked ordinary. Don't get me started on NK. He may develop but this game looked similar to what I often saw in college. If he gets discouraged its over.

Finally the lack of numerous, sustained drives by the offense was disappointing. The Cards need to keep the defense off the field.
I felt the pats went out of their way to try to quiet jones and he still got 5 tackles and a sack. I bet he has a better game this week.

Pardon my ignorance, but aren't chop blocks illegal? That's what the Pats seemed to do on every play, literally just go for Jones's knees.

I thought they were made 100% illegal this year but they did it consistently against us.

Cut blocks are legal.

Chop Blocks occur when one blocker goes after the defender below the waist and another blocker engages the defender high.

Thanks for the clarification. It's pretty clear what they did to CC a few years ago at Denver that injured him (Julius Thomas the culprit)... The low cut blocks still should be penalized since its going after the defenders knees... Seems like an injury waiting to happen

For a smaller player, going low is the only way they can survive. It usually isn't an issue because the defender can see it coming.

my theory on the game is this.

NE needed line help and already had a pretty good idea they would be without Brady for a few games...not to mention Tom aint getting any younger...

Arizona had a dynamic team knocking on the door of the super bowl but seriously needed to improve their pass rush...

Arizona gets... Chandler Jones...with a year left and the ability to tag him after that.

New England gets...Talented but maligned(some would say wasted pick) Johnathon Cooper to add talent to their line, an additional second round pick,....and a victory on opening day that makes yet another bilicheat young QB look like a franchise player...

now next off season bilicheat will trade garrapollo for a first and a fifth and the trade with Arizona will be complete.

Blount is a physical back, and it comes down to saying the guy is good and not that we really sucked though it would have been nice if we would have treated him as a physical back and wrapped him up till the cavalry came so to speak. As far as the zone coverage, I do not see us as a zone coverage team and it sucks we went to zone due to one guy named Williams in my opinion. As far as BA and Bettcher, well these are professional football players and there is so much you can do... lesson, stay away from videos of a season with the ensuing hype and play the game and listen to what your coaches must have told you more than once because this is on the players mentality and they should not have their mental diapers changed on this level of competition

I think JG is their QB of the future and they brought him along accordingly and in no way are going to trade him now, but it would be nice if the Cardinals got this same sense of urgency at the position and give the staff time to groom the QB like the Patriots :)

thought Brady was planning to play five more seasons? Think the kid is willing to sit that long?? Gonna get tricky when his rookie contract is up.

If it is with a winning program with a mystique like they have now and the Pats just had a QB playing till he is forty, both sides might not see an issue with waiting. I would personally like to wait in the wing even three more years to be the Patriot QB with a good understanding of the system and success on a big stage

LOL I think Brady is amazing, but he's a system QB. Let's be honest for a minute, does anyone think Brady, low round pick out of Michigan, would ever have thrived in the NFL if not for Belichick? You put Tom Brady on some bad teams, the Browns for instance, and he's not the same HOF QB. Steve Young could have suffered in Tampa as a bunch of total suck but he got sent to the 49ers.

Tom Brady is good only because Belichick allows him to be good. You put Brady on some crap teams with no offensive line and he's just another crap white QB who holds the ball too long and can't move.

There is a little truth to this, but really, Brady is a gamer - Belichick or not. Cassel, Garapola (?), Mallet, etc. would not succeed like Brady even if Belichick got them to the playoffs. Brady has proven to be smart, accurate and highly competitive when it's needed most - that isn't something Belichick schemed into him. Thought I agree, under another coaching staff, his likelihood of success drops tremendously (and I think the same for Russell Wilson, another HOF under Carroll and probably no one else)

I agree... BA would have cut Brady while he was still fourth string.... or shortly after he went 1 of 3 for 6 yards in his first nfl PT

Well we never got the best out of our players, I think BA's greedy play calling was a blessing for belicheck. I know I know - same theme by me for years- yes we ran more for the first time in a decade last year- and won 13 fing games! got allergic to the run and addicted to the pass and got blown out in the playoffs again.

Bear Bryant needs to come unglued off BA's wall and kick him right in the nuts - say boy you got 3 starting running backs and a strong offensive line - don't be scared to bludgeon a defense until John Brown can get more open on play action. those JB passes were are staple last year - and we earned the extra 12 inches of openness by running the damned ball! We did not last Sunday.

Let's see... Brady is 39 and Garoppolo was drafted in the 2nd round in 2014, when Brady was about to turn 37.

Palmer is 36, so if the Cardinals draft a QBOF next year they'll be right on the Patriots' schedule!
