Will Smith's Karate Kid
Oct 1, 2007, 13:00 GMT

Will Smith's son Jaden is set to star in a remake of cult classic 'The Karate Kid'.

Will's nine-year-old son is being lined up to play Daniel LaRusso in a new version of the popular 1984 film, with Jackie Chan as his martial arts mentor Mr. Miyagi.

It is rumoured the 'Men In Black' star is set to make his directorial debut and helm the movie.

Will's production company Overbrook Entertainment will produce alongside Jerry Weintraub, producer of the original film.

The 'Karate Kid' follows youngster Daniel, who learns karate to help cope with school bullies.

The first 'Karate Kid' - which starred Ralph Macchio as Daniel and the late Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi - was so successful it spawned three sequels, the most recent being 'The Next Karate Kid', in 1994.

Jaden proved his acting talent last year when he earned rave reviews opposite his dad in 'The Pursuit of Happyness'.

Sony Pictures have confirmed the project is in the initial planning stages.

This was my favorite movie when I was 10, I even had the karate kid headband.

I really don't see how they can duplicate it. Come on now, "wax on, wax off", flippin brilliant.

I watched the original this weekend and still can't believe Daniel won the tournament. Even the fat kid from Cobra Kai should've been able to beat him.

Old school training techniques are always more effective.

It's on ABC Family right now. Daniel is about to fight Dutch.

The fat kid was in a different bracket and was taken out early. :D

That would probably be true. The fat kid and the black kid are the only members of Cobra Kai that didn't have black belts.

Here's an unrelated piece of trivia:
Johnny's semifinal opponent actually invented the crane kick during filming after being told by Pat Morita they were looking for some kind of special move for use in the movie.

OMG - I didn't read that Jackie Chan was set to play Miyagi! This will be amongst the worst movies ever made.

That's the part that makes me especially skeptical of this movie. How would they pull off an evil dojo of nine year olds?

This looks like something that would be targeted to elementary school students.

Chan

Jackie Chan is in final negotiations to join the Columbia Pictures remake of "The Karate Kid."Harald Zwart will helm the pic, which has been revamped as a starring vehicle for Jaden Smith.

Set in an exotic Asian locale, the new film will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth (Smith) learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor (Chan). Chris Murphy penned the screenplay.

"Karate Kid" will shoot early this summer in Beijing.

Jerry Weintraub, who launched the original 1984 pic, is producing alongside Overbrook Entertainment's James Lassiter, Will Smith and Ken Stovitz. China Film Group Corp. will co-produce in China.

International martial-arts star Chan has put his karate skills to use in such English-language films as the "Rush Hour" trilogy, "The Forbidden Kingdom" and the upcoming "The Spy Next Door."

Zwart most recently helmed "The Pink Panther 2" for the studio and MGM.
