They will have to be careful in this modern age with the Mexican banditos persona. The PC crowd will be all over them if they even come close to the original movie.

I love the original movie and would have no expectation that any modern remake would come close to it. Not many these days do.

I probably won't go see it if/when it comes out. I'll just pop in the original and enjoy it again :)

Third Adapation of 7 Samurai (Magnificent Seven)

Strange that they would re-do a movie that is a classic in itself.

This is a rare film already, since The Magnificent Seven is just a re-telling of Seven Samurai.

Seven Samurai is a great, great movie, long as all heck, but great.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047478/

Then there is the US version of Seven Samurai using Cowboys, which is the Magnificent Seven. The story is shortened but it is exactly the same. Regardless it is a great movie as well.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054047/

Now there is a re-do of the American version, and to be honest, I think it would have been cooler to redo the Japanese version, but what do I know. Well, actually I know this, it is going to be hard for this new version to stand up to the other two, because they are both really good movies.

There has been a lot more than just one remake of Seven Samurai (my #1 favorite movie of all time). TV shows, TV movies, theatrical movies and sequels, and Anime.

Even the premise has been used countless times. A group of people helping out another helpless group of people against bandits/villains/etc. Hell, that's basically Guardians of the Galaxy!

I will say, having some of the actors/behind-the-scenes people that they have is a plus. Could be worse, it could be directed by Brett Ratner and starring Chris Tucker! Instead, it's got Denzel, Chris Pratt, D'Onofrio and Ethan Hawke and is directed by a decent action director in Antoine Fuqua.

This. Totally needless remake, but the people involved make me very intrigued.

I haven't seen the Seven Samurai, but I ran through its trailer and the Magnificent Seven ones this morning on youtube. Seven Saurai seems to have a more realistic feel to it and it is wayyyyyy more appealing visually. Here's the trailer:

The other thing that jumped out at me was that, the US versions seem to be all about promoting the big name stars or trying to create a new "star". It seems that Akira Kurosawa didn't care about that, he focused on the powerful story. Definitely going to have to watch his original version.

I'm in! Looks awesome. Always love a good western even if it's a remake. Always watch Rio Bravo & El Dorado even though they are the same movie. :)

To a point, yes, but Toshiro Mifune was arguably the greatest Japanese star in the world at the time (and pretty much still is) and Takashi Shimura (the 2nd lead) was also quite popular in Japan. So while yes, they weren't exactly recognizable to American audiences, they certainly were in Japan.

Beautifully filmed, acted and written. It is a true epic in every sense of the word. The main cut is 4 hours long, but it doesn't seem like it--I've seen it a bunch of times in theaters and a couple times on home video. Both are amazing experiences.

No need to even watch the teaser for this one. Pass!

Why would you want to miss this one? Looks pretty damn good. Who cares if its a re-do, it looks like a damn good one. ;)

Thankfully Jeff Bridges isn't one of the 7.

Went back and checked the cast of the 1960 film. Damn, helluva cast of old guys and newcomers who would end up being film legends. Loved that movie. Saw Seven Samurai years later.

Yul Brenner
Steve McQueen
Charles Bronson
Robert Vaughn
James Coburn

The Magnificent Seven (remake)

http://movies.msn.com/movies/article.aspx?news=735095&ocid=ansent11

Tom Cruise is said to have agreed to appear as one of the gang of gunslingers in the adaptation of John Sturges' 1960 film, and Damon is set to star alongside him as Vin, the character Steve McQueen played in the original.

A source tells Britain's The Sun, "MGM are throwing big money at the film and wanted some top names to fill the main parts. You can't get much bigger than Cruise and Damon."

More Hollywood "creativity".

Plus the "original" was a remake. Good thing Stout wasn't there to shoot that one down!!! :p

Alex: "The Final Jeopardy clue is this: The classic Hollywood movie Casablanca was based upon this."

Bert: "What is another movie?"

Alex: "Ooooh, I'm sorry, Bert, that's incorrect. The correct response was that it WASN'T A REMAKE OF A MOVIE, but an adaptation of the stage play Everybody Comes to Rick's. That, and the premature and now very foolish looking celebration is certainly going to cost you. What did you risk? Ooh, your dignity. I'm sorry, Bert. That's got to hurt."

I think he was referring to the original Magnificent Seven being a remake, not Casablanca.

I know, but Casablanca was the last movie mentioned, and I wanted to be silly :)

I like the actors and if it's anywhere near as good as the True Grit remake I am in.
