McCown showed me a lot last season.
His only knock that I saw was holding onto the ball too long. He took quite a few sacks that he probably didn't need to. But he protected the ball as a result. If he didn't take a sack on third down against Minnesota, he might not have had a fourth down. Understanding that he has another shot at the endzone (when the endzone is his only option given the score) goes a long way to understanding what kind of QB he is because this was against a good pass defense (28 picks, second in the NFL) in crunch time, behind and out of timeouts.
Holding onto the ball too long (which probably is the story behind potentially not finding open receivers) is correctable with playcalling, patterns and experience.

If he's only as good as his last drive or even last pass, then he's the man.

In his first season, extrapolated over 16 games:
314 for 533 passing (59%), 3571 yards, 16 td, 11 int.
91 rushes for 602 yards, 5 td.

Add one part training camp competition, 2/3's cup preseason games with the first team, 12 oz of mini-camp and other offseason work.
Bake at 115 degrees for four months, or until done.
Presto.
Serves 20-some thousand fans.

Caveat: I would like to see him evolve from, "I'm really happy to get the opportunity, this is really fun," to something more along the lines of, "This is my team, I am the Man, we've got talent and we're gonna rock the Casbah."

OK, I'll bite.
You want to hand over the reins to a guy who just half a season ago was a pure "deer in the headlights" QB? There was no pressure on him the last three games. If manning/Big Ben become stars in the future and we pass on them for mcCown we'll look back at not drafting them as one of the lamest decisions the Cards have made in a long list of lame decisions.

Well, he did pass the ball to LJ Shelton.

Other than that, the only argument is a servicable QB vs. a potential all-pro. I'm not 100% sold on Josh, but he does bring footspeed and bullett-passes to the table. Plus he actually turns his head and READS defenses.

Well, that sucked - my attempt to argue with you turned into a failure

I'd contend that the last drive of the season was as much pressure as you could possibly expect in the regular season.
I'd also think that starting your first game would be more than a little pressure.

His last two drives (again, behind in the fourth quarter);

8 for 11, 80 yards, TD. Converted fourth and 6, third and 13, fourth and 2.

3 for 4, 46 yards, TD. Converted fourth and 25.

This is not the work of a deer in the headlights.

I agree that down the stretch McCown was a pleasant surprise when compared to his earlier performances, I'm just not sold on passing up a potential franchise guy for a guy who showed promise in 3 relatively meaningless games. Remember, this board was pretty much totally anti-McCown until about a month ago.

McClown and his "I pass to the o-line" can sit his butt on the bench.

All McClown showed last year is that he can be a decent backup.

I'm not either. That's why we should draft Taylor and find something else for Wilson to do.

Josh McPlummer will be a nice backup in the NFL, give me a franchise QB though if available.

I wouldn't kick my TV if they did that on draft day. Man, we got some holes to fill.

How's that?
Give me something I can chew on here. Where exactly is this gaping hole in his game?

Can't argue. Green runs some QB friendly offenses (his own words) maybe that could help him play even better. I would actually be more upset going into the season with Manning or Roth as starter. That would tell me the Cards have conceded yet another season to rebuilding.

He's got the height, the speed, the athleticism, the arm, and he showed in his first stint as a starter that he's a lot further along from the neck up than anyone thought.
No way in hell Blake beats him out in training camp.

If it's truly an open competition for the job I believe you would be correct.

I'd be okay with McCown at least for another year, but I sure don't have any desire to see anymore of Blake. I wonder if he had a hard time seeing over that big line in front of him.:bang:

Blake is not the answer albeit he probably will at least get to start the season as the #1 QB.

I'd rather not put all my future eggs in Josh's basket.

This would be a great QB group next year......Blake......McCown and Phil Eli Roethlisberger.

Developing a new Qb is not the top priority of this team or coaching staff. If Rivers was available in the 2nd he might be a good pick but he would be a couple of yrs away as would Roth. The upside of Eli is his Pr value and his pedigree. But trading up to get him at #1 would be to expensive. With the top wideout we would already have a solid nucleus with Blake short term and Josh long term. Rivers might be there or we could trade up the 33 pick into the 20's to get him. But again he wouldn't be the priority. Eli as a solid Franchise qb, if there at 3 would be the best pick...but it is a remote chance. Take the best wideout or trade down if Eli isn't there.

I'm all about some defense in this draft. We gave up scores of 42, 38, 37, 44 and 50. Those are only the really bad ones. We were dead last in the league giving up an average of 28.2 points per game.

I say draft Eli or Ben. McCown doesn't seem to have any prescence once the ball hits his hands. To me it seems he goes through his first read and if it's not there his mind screams RUN! Which he does well, except for the fact he doesn't know how to slide. If this guy started 16 games he'd pass Aikman's concussion total in one season. My recommendation to our new QB coach if McCown starts; slip some downers in his gatorade.

"Give me McCown over Eli Riverberger."

They had those on the menu at a river rafting place in North Carolina.

Football Awareness, the ability to read defenses well, the ability to make plays under pressure.

His arm is strong but not overly accurate.

That's not very convincing.
When didn't he make a play under pressure?

Sounds pretty genious to me and that the road I hope we take!
