And about being competitive, I am going to hold off on that talk until we actually have more than two adequate starters on our Opening Day roster.

i heard a rumor that russ ortiz is leaning toward signing with the dbacks. he'll be a decent 2-3 pitcher for us.

Fly ball pitcher at BOB - I think not. Glaus would be good option at 1B, but it's a moot point w/ the rest of the roster. The line about Dellucci getting 450-500 at bats is just frightening.

If there is a better low budget pitcher, I am willing to listen. Russ Ortiz would not a be a bad pick-up, but he wont be an ace. More like a #3 starter. He still walks way too many people. I am terrified to think about Ortiz and Webb on the same staff though.... :-\
Can you say, most walks by a pitching staff ever?

I wonder what theyve had to dish out the last couple of years?

I think it has been very minimal, but this year was in essence a balloon payment. I believe Schilling gets some ungodly payment in the 10 million range just himself......

Rosenthal beats Red Sox dork Gammons for another scoop. Why didn't the Yankees just keep Miguel Cairo? Jon Leiber to the Phils for 3 yrs and $21 million another rumor.

Zenny, can you find a list on BA somewhere of everyone who was non-tendered?

Not yet - deadline was just 90 minutes ago - here's the best I can find on short notice. ESPN on Arbitration

btw, reportedly Detroit is running wild on unspent Red Wings money - guess the owner is bored.

The best news is that we did NOT offer arbitration to our sizeable stable of hasbeens/neverweres

Edit: azdiamondbacks.com says that nobody but Sexson was offered arbitration.

Yeah, that was my point - we had such stellar crew as Fassero, Sparks, Reynolds, Fetters, Baerga, McCracken, Colbrunn... I consider letting them all walk one small positive note from the front office. Unless they replace them with an equally lame-and-halt crew. Danny Bautista was a FA (a low B) I sort of thought they might have offered arbitration to.

I guess its start-from-scratch time again - only without much scratch.

Right, I had written that I thought I had seen something about Bautista and arbitration so I asked about it but answered my own question so I edited my post, which probably made it a bit confusing.

Surprising names are JD Drew and Carlos Delgado. JD in RF and his bro at SS would be nice if Glaus goes elsewhere. Beware any starting pitcher the Braves let walk, such as Joe Jr. favorite Russ Ortiz. Unfortunately, the Astros did not offer Russ Springer arbitration so we can't forfeit a 1st round draft pick for him for the second time in five years.

Interesting names if healthy and cheap:
Steve Kline
Antonio Osuna
Jeremy Affeldt
Hideo Nomo - look at his splits before you accuse me of heavy drug use
Scott Williamson
Miguel Cairo

Leave it up to the Phillies idiotic GM to sign Rheal Cormier to two years/$5.25 million and offer Doug Glanville arbitration.

Steve Klein has "Yankees" written all over him, but Jeremy Affeldt is interesting indeed

He is 6'4'' and I think he is 26. But hasnt he had a problem with blisters which caused him to be a reliever instead of a starter? I remember reading something about that because he was compared to a D'backs farm hand that also has problems with blisters.

However, I still think he would be a good option. He had a good year two years ago, and I wouldnt mind bringing him in.... of course with this team I wouldnt mind bringing in a couple more pitchers... ;)

Mao,

Did the Dbacks really give up a first to sign Russ Springer? That makes my head hurt.

Looks like Mantei has signed with the Red Sox, this according to the SoSH board.

If it makes you feel any better, we forfeited a second rounder for Willie Blair and a third rounder for Greg Swindell.

"The chance of getting a good player with a high draft pick is substantial enough that it is clearly a disastrous strategy to give up a first-round draft choice to sign a mediocre free agent."

Funny, I was about to post about never having seen a more hittable fastball that Springer's and then someone has to bring up Blair and Swindell.

Thanks a lot.
