I have always believed that Wells was better suited to play tackle...and while his play at guard looks a little stronger this year, he might very well be the RTOF, especially now that he's signed to a long-term deal.

The more I watch Elton Brown, the more I am intrigued and impressed...he's strong at the point of attack and he's fantastic in space on pulls and screen, etc. I'm surprised all the focus is on Lutui (whom I think will be good i years to come...but is too inexperienced at the pro level to start just yet), when Elton Brown is a very viable option.

Sorry, but JeffG tried to sell this snake oil after the draft, and no one's buying.

When LeVar was on the field, he played well. The problem was that his knees gave out too soon. You'd be better off calling me out for pimping Wendell Bryant after his one good game against the Lions before he came down with a high ankle sprain. Man, was I wrong about that guy.

But at least I never hitched my wagon to never-weres like Marcel Shipp and Raynoch Thompson. That would be embarassing.

Their best O-lineman during Brunell's tenure was Tony Boselli who was... wait for it... a left tackle.

No teams do this to protect the "blind side" of their lefty QB. The 49ers didn't flip it for Steve Young, the Falcons didn't for Michael Vick, the Buccaneers didn't for Chris Simms, the Jags didn't for Mark Brunell, nor did the Redskins when he was traded (look where Samuels plays for Washington--still LT), nor will the Arizona Cardinals for Matt Leinart.

Sorry, but JeffG tried to sell this snake oil after the draft, and no one's buying.

I disagree The Jags did indeed adjust their scheme. And I still believe we will have to.

While shifting Big to RT is out of the question we will definitley need to upgrade the RT spot.

Why does everyone think position changes are easy and think we can just throw this guy here and there. You can do it in college and get by with it because the talent pool is pretty shallow. Every position in the NFL is pretty specialized and takes time to master. It's ok to move guys around in practice just in case of severe emergencies but i would let guys stay at their position and excell at it. After that, then you can tinker around with line movement. I think the reason Big isn't a perrenial all-pro is because his first 3 years he was playing a different position every year. If he would been stuck at LT from day one, like he should've been, then he would probably be mentioned with the elite LT's by now. This, being his 3rd year there, is the year i think he will thrive and take the step up an elite LT.

Keep an eye on Minnesota.

- They lost Koren Robinson (on the heels of losing Burleson) and are desperate for WR help

- They have a good backup tackle in Rosenthal, who normally plays RT but who's been taking snaps at LT as well.

- We have a surplus of WR's

- Loney was the O-line coach at Minny.

Depending on how we look at RT vs. New England, don't be surprised if the Vikings are our trading partner for a new RT.

While I cant provide specific quotes or verbiage, the subject was regularly discussed during broadcasts while Brunnel was in Jville. As I recall blocking schemes for draws and rollouts were affected as was the use of the TE in blocking schemes.
I am not advocating movng Wells to RT but I think you would agree that we have to address the RT position regardless of whom is at QB.
If anything move Wells To Lt ang Big To LG.

Makes a great deal of sense but I would be suprised if this happens. Childress comes from Reid's school of "WR's, We don't need no stinking WR's". Reid also loves building a team in the trenches, this was very obvious during this years draft as they took several O-line and spent a 1st on D-line.

Maybe Childress isn't as committed to this philosophy as Reid but don't be surprised if a trade doesn't happen.

After the Patriots game, I felt the receivers did not gel without Johnson
(anyway I do not recall see him playing with the first team). Possibly being held out for a trade? I cannot over stress, I'd rather keep him after the the Pats game. Walters played well, but I didn't think much of McCoy in the game.
Bottom line (i guess) is whether Mke Rosenthal is better than what we have at RT. Rosenthal started All 16 GAMES with the GIANTS in 2002 and started all 16 games with the Vikings in 2003. I think he was out in 2004 with a broken ankle. But, now he may be third team RT with the Vikings - anyway, thats whats the roster indicates.
But, this is what Real Football 365 says:
"Vikings should release Rosenthal

It's tough being a professional athlete. When things are going good, all the praise is there. However, it's very easy to fall from the good graces of fans. Sometimes it gets nasty. Unfortunately for Minnesota Vikings right tackle Mike Rosenthal, he has already lost plenty of fan support and soon may be on the unemployment line.
When the June 1 roster cuts are made, don't be surprised to see Rosenthal's name among those released. While players are usually released in June in order for teams to avoid taking a salary cap hit, or to get themselves under the salary cap, in Rosenthal's case it would be because he has drastically underperformed.
Since signing a six-year contract extension in September of 2004, the Minnesota Vikings ' right tackle has been a sub-par performer on what was a mediocre offensive line. The line has since been addressed with the addition of All-Pro guard Steve Hutchinson, the returned health of center Matt Birk and addition of tackle Artis Hicks via trade.
Rosenthal injured his foot after just two games in '04 and was placed on injured reserve. In a Monday Night Football matchup with the rival Green Bay Packers last season, he hit rock bottom. Play after play he was getting his proverbial tail whipped by Packers defensive end Aaron Kampman. After being called for a holding penalty negating a Michael Bennett seven-yard run, and then getting destroyed five plays later by Kampman, again giving up a sack, he was promptly removed from the lineup in favor of rookie Marcus Johnson.
The trade for Hicks has pretty much all but sealed his fate with the team. There is now an abundance of able bodies competing for the positions. With Hicks assuming Rosenthal's starting spot, there is no reason for the team to keep him around.
In March, he restructured his contract, but did not take a pay cut. He still has five years and $10 million remaining on his contract. There is no need to pay a backup that much, so his contract should be his shipping card out of town.

So, why would we want to trade Bryant Johnson for Rosental and the above contract?

I would be more inclined to go with Wells to centre than at tackle.

As would I.

Even with Bridges I think the center spot is easily the weakest link of this OL.

Agree...

Move Wells to starting C, Lutui/Elton to starting LG and move Step to a back-up G spot.

I'm thinking Step's problems are due to mental problems with the system and the line-calls. And he should be better than Leckey based on talent coming out of college and physical ability, but Leckey outplays him in games. He looked decent as a starter last season at G, where he has to think less.

Wells has the best technique on the O-Line and has been the fastest to pick up the new scheme (If I remember the camp reports correctly). Sounds ideal as a C to me.
