That's got to be so embarrassing, getting knocked out with one hit. Lucky for the other guy there were people around to see him knock the ish out of someone.

Hockey fights are the best part of hockey; too bad the league doesnt think so, and tries to legislate it out  . Fans love it. I say forget all those high paid prima donnas and play next year with all enforcers in the lineup. :hulk:

The league doesn't like it, yeah right, the refs were just standing around waiting for the fight.

Seriously. What were they doing? It looked like the one ref was telling them "Alright gentlemen, let's keep it clean. No rabbit punches or hitting below the belt."

I agree with CC - core hockey fans don't go to the game for fighting, because they understand the place of fighting in the game. The enforcer doesn't even really exist anymore, because the instigator penalty largley prevents him from retaliating for cheap shots, and he can't go after defenders who now have free reign to smother a scorer like a human blanket. A fight was once a signal that something was actually going on--now it means that exactly nothing is going on.

Very well put... and I say that as as someone who played in the WHA in the early 70's.

Let's not confuse contact, which is integral to the game - and fighting for no real purpose.

And we watch football why?

For pretty much the same reason...

Take the contact and violence out of football and there would be about 95% less fans...

it is the same with hockey, the two sports thrive on contact and violence.

For hockey fans to deny is just that--utter denial. There is no aruging that the amazing athleticism of the athletes involved in the sport is stupendous.

But no contact and no violence= no fans for those two sports.

Actually NHL= No fans regardless.

The only purpose of fights in the NHL is to allow people that hate the sport to make fun of it. It's a great game. In my opinion better than football. However, the NHL is a joke of a league when compared to the NFL or even the XFL.

But I still have love for my first team, even if they may never play a game again. :yotes:

Yeah, let's distinguish between fighting and contact, but let's also make note of dirty hits, which are the actual violent part of the sport. Fighting in hockey is not particularly bloody, and the refs break it up when one player goes down, which on skates is hardly a KO. The fight often diffused a dirty hit that was coming, or kept a defender in line before he put a stick in a Lafleur, Gretzky, or a Lemieux's skates. Of course you want your team to 'win' the fight, but cheering for fighting specifically is a little weird. It's like hoping a brushback pitch strays inside, and not really caring about a strikeout.
