One has to be excited about the Cardinals' acquisition of LB Buster Davis. This kid has an uncanny ability to snuff plays out and he's a first-rate finisher...a.k.a. a cleaner upper.

The pick makes even more sense now that the Cardinals drafted DT Alan Branch. Davis is the perfect compliment to Branch and vice versa. Diminutive linebackers need space eaters in front of them to allow them clean shots at the running backs and the freedom to move laterally to make plays off-tackle and in the flats.

Smaller inside linebackers are very much in vogue in the NFL and there's a good reason for it. Their pad level is better suited for getting underneath ball carriers and taking out their legs. They are also more difficult to block for bigger offensive linemen because they are smaller targets and the bigger linemen have to dip down and lose their bases in order to get a good shot on the linebacker.

Buster Davis brings focus, confidence and energy to this defense. He's a playmaker and a leader. And, not only is he one of the surest and most reliable tacklers in this draft, he's a swift blitzer up the middle. Davis packs a lot of power into his frame...and when he's in tip-top shape he is a dynamic player.

At his size, he needs to react quickly and decisively in pass coverage...but when you watch him on tape, his ability to recognize pass, even on play action, is, as I previously said, uncanny. This kid does his homework.

The key to Davis is that he is a playmaker ... tenacious is the word I come up with ... gotta love a guy with that much energy ..

I wanted us to get Harris in the 2nd round, but after all was said and done I think we came out of this smelling like a rose .. 3 real impact players and Davis definitely bein one of them ...

Prediction - Buster's value to the team will be as much in bringing intensity to the defensive side of the locker room as it does production on the field.

Sounds like a Seth Joyner clone.

I think Buster is only Diminutive in height, but not in weight as he usually plays around 240. But I think you are correct more beef up front with Branch in the fold makes the pick even better. It is actually my favorite pick. Guy with a huge chip on his shoulder who already had a ton of tenacity could be a real bad combo for opposing O's.

I am going to call it right now and say he is the leading special teams tackler his first year, with some spot starts and a lot of rotational play.

I always watched Milligan last year on special teams. It will be interesting to add Davis to the mix.

I hope in his Philly days and not in his Cardinal days

Don't forget that Joyner played on the highest ranked Cardinal defense of the last 50 years in 1994. The last 8 games of the season they only gave up a total of 95 points. Those guys were fun to watch.

It seems Buster Davis is the most popular pick of this draft. I know he's my favorite.

Right now he is.

But if Alan Branch brings his "A" Game on every down and takes over the LOS, as only he can, I'll be bouncing off walls cheering for him.

Alan Branch is my favorite pick of the draft. To get a guy who ranked in the top 10, is a steal for the Cardinals. My least favorite pick is Levi Brown. I was hoping for a playmaker on the Defensive side of the ball with the first pick. This is a pretty good draft for the cardinals. I can't wait for the season to begin.

I agree, getting Branch saved this draft for the Cardinals. Levi was taken because we had to replace Big and Davis in the 3rd filled a need. We got good football players and highly rated guys in lower rounds. If there game can translate to the pros we did well. Would still rather have had Big and Landry or Big and Peterson than Levi Brown...there rest ended up excellent.

I like the signing but wonder how does a LB who is somewhere between 5'8" and 5' 10" fall back into pass coverage?

There are CB's that size that have had the ability to play well. When you are smaller, you just need to position yourself better, and have good athletic ability.

In this mornings USA Today the Cards were given 4 Stars in the draft. Only 4 other teams received 4 stars. I am feeling better all the time. We have now talked the talk and let us next walk the walk.

:)

That's why I found it interesting.

Ron McKinnon wasn't very tall, either, IIRC.
