I know many on this board think that Mel Kiper Jr. is a joke, but I am one who thinks that guy knows his stuff. He comes accross as arrogant, but the guy is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to draft stuff.
I have followed the draft for about 18 years, and I don't recall a time when runningbacks were ever 1, 2, and 3 on his big board. He currently has Cedric Benson at #1, Ronnie Brown at #2, and Cadillac Williams at #3. This tells us one of 2 things about this draft. Either this is just a fantastic year for running backs or this is one awful draft class. Realistically it's probably a little of both.
It sure would be nice to see what Ronnie Brown could do if he had a chance to get 35 carries in a game. He is one of those roll of the dice types who sure looks awesome when he gets his chances, but you just don't know what he is for sure because he just hasn't ever had the chance to be the true feature back. One of the real positives about Brown is that he comes basically injury free and has not had much wear and tear on his body. He has a terrific burst in the hole and seems to be a guy who has alot of patience with his blockers. The more I watch film on Brown, the more I see a young Edgerrin James. He compares favorably to James in size, speed, pass catching ability, and with that knack of patiently waiting for the block and then having the ability to turn on the jets and get big yardage.
If the Cards are on the clock and Benson, Cadillac, Brown, and DeAngelo Williams are still on the board I would be inclined to take Brown at this point. The great thing about the next 4 months is that I can always change my mind!!
