Bottomline....

Theres no excuses to hold both picks with no backup plan...

Now I hear they wanted Brewer? Carney, Sefolosha? Omg are you kidding those guys had like 0 chance to fall to them.

So why not have made a plan like moving both those first rounders for 1 of someones in the future?

I hope they have a commitment to Jay Williams, cause NO ONE that isnt a HOMER of this team buys into Barbosa playing the point.
He has 0 court vision, and gets his shot blocked more than the entire team combined. Did I mention 0 defense?

Its late Im home from watching the worst 3 hours Ive ever attended of a Draft. THanks Mike for the heads up that if your guys are there youll take a 20second commercial worth of money for that pick......

TO end it all giving away those picks means they had no backup plan that was worth all the scouting that was done....Cause there will be some Damn good players in the NBA that came after the 21st pick

They said during the draft party that they tried to trade up with everyone in the 10-16 range and no one wanted to trade with them because everyone said they are the team to beat next year and no one wanted to help them get better.

They were prepared. D'Antoni mentioned that there was a possibility of them trading out of the draft alltogether.

I was saying days ago they wanted Brewer or Thabo. They tried to trade up to get them, and failed....

They were prepared...

I just still can't believe they left Williams on the board at 21

Satisfied Suns Build for the Present on Draft Night

By Josh Greene, Suns.com
Posted: June 28, 2006

While the NBA Draft usually focuses on the league's new faces, the Suns proved Wednesday night they are just fine with the old ones.

The defending back-to-back Pacific Division Champs opted to trade their No. 21 and 27 picks, as well as retiring forward/center Brian Grant’s contract, to bolster a $9 million in savings. The deals should keep the team under the tax threshold while also freeing up the funds to help keep the existing roster intact. They also picked up a future, conditional first-round pick from Boston, but the ability to free up the funds to help re-sign guys like Tim Thomas was most important for Phoenix.

“What that does for us is further open up room to keep the core of this team together for the future,” Suns Vice President of Basketball Operations David Griffin said. “More importantly it also opens up the door for us to make a serious run at keeping Tim.”

Admittedly, the Suns did have a little help in the draft night decision-making process. After being unable to move up a few slots on the board and seeing the majority of their draft hopefuls taken by other teams before their selection finally came up, the Suns' front office calmly resorted to Plan C.

“We tried to move up and teams kept saying, ‘If our guy isn’t there, we’ll do it,’" Head Coach Mike D’Antoni said. “Obviously they kept being there, and our last guy went off the board. After that, we said we were out. We liked some of those guys later on, but we thought it was more beneficial for our team at this point where we are – reaching the Conference Finals, Amaré Stoudemire coming back – than getting a young player who’ll eat up some room who’ll just sit there, not get any time and not develop.”

The lack of any draft additions doesn’t mean the Suns aren’t looking towards adding a new name via free agency in the next few weeks. Both D’Antoni and Griffin reiterated that they had no problem adding some depth with the help of an incoming veteran – a choice they were prepared to make all along if they couldn’t land their ideal pick in the draft Wednesday night.

“Every decision made today was made in advance, in terms of ‘if this group is there we’ll go for it.’ And if not, we will do what we need to do with veterans and go a different direction," Griffin said. “It is almost a mission statement at this point. All of the people are here because they want to win a ring, and we are all here because we want to do the same thing. We feel this was the best way to get where we wanted to go.”

While it’s pretty obvious where the team wants to go after two consecutive tastes of the Conference Finals, the head coach stressed to Suns fans that the best is yet to come.

“I don’t want to disappoint fans with nobody coming in tonight,” D’Antoni smiled, “but at the same time I don’t think we’ll disappoint them when November comes around. That’s our goal: to win a championship.”

The Suns did say they liked one PG in this draft, didn't they? I'm curious which one it was, since it obviously wasn't Marcus Williams, Rajon Rondo, Kyle Lowry, Jordan Farmar, or Sergio Rodriguez.

I guess they might have been talking about Randy Foye, but frankly, that seems a little like cheating. :thumbdown

They were supposed to be high on Shannon Brown, but he's not really a PG either, more like Eddie House.

I heard that teams were willing to trade their early picks to the suns this year .... for the 1st round atlanta pick next year. That would have been a huge mistake. I suspect that alot of teams knew the suns were trying to move their picks and were trying to lowball the suns on value in trades. Even the 27 pick(which was sold) was not worth much considering the weak draft. At best, it was worth a 2nd rounder in the future.

I sympathize with those of us that werer hoping to see new talent, but the talent level may not have been that good. Whats really important is to recognize that the suns made it to the WCF without amare, KT and a healthy Raja. To fix what aint broke is usually stupid, and any new talent will not get the PT to develop anyway. The suns should try to pickup a veteran backup point who can contribute before the start of the season. I suspect one will be let go or be available this summer.

Sarver said the only plan was to trade up and get one of the players they wanted, but couldn't find a dance partner. Claims teams didn't want to help the Suns get better.

Nice spin for a guy still learning on the job.

I believe the Suns when they say they had no intention of drafting players other than the ones at the top of their list. I don't think they were unprepared (they had a game plan, and their final action was Plan C), but neither do I think they expected such resistance for teams to trade with them. In that case, I think it's obvious D'Antoni has some learning to do as the GM.

Those of us who have been predicting the Suns would trade out of the draft were prepared. BTW, I almost had a heart attack when I heard that the Suns had drafted Rondo and was hugely relieved to learn he had been traded. The guys cannot shoot.

The logic was always there. There is no point in adding expensive projects to a team getting ready for a championship run.

I wasn't prepared and the draft was pretty boring for me since I didn't get to see a new Suns player. I was dissapointed that they didn't pick up one of those point guards but I am totally fine with this and I understand why it happened. Nobody in the draft this year could do much for us on this team. They would just be benchwarmers. It would be better to resign TT then trade James Jones to be able to sign Bobby Jackson also, someone who will actually get playing time and be a nice back-up point guard. This year's draft class wasn't very strong. Next year's will be better and we will have 3 first rounders and maybe 4 depending on what we get if we trade James Jones.

I was getting kind of anxious though those two times they said there was a trade. I was expecting something with Marion...
