Well there is one thread against him, so here goes one for him:

The Case for Ernie Sims

From various draft reports:

The Tallahassee native was rated the number one prep prospect in America as a senior in 2002. The All-American played varsity in high school for five season—dating back to the eight grade—and helped lead North Florida Christian HS to four state titles.

He played in all 13 games as a true freshman for the Seminoles in 2003 posting 42 tackles, two TFL’s, 2 pass deflections, 3 qb deflections and a forced fumble.

He played every game in 2004 finished 2nd on the team with 86 stops including 9 behind the line of scrimmage, 4.5 sacks, 9 hurries, five passes batted down, 2 forced fumbles and a blocked punt. In 2005 he had 72 total tackles, 10 TFLs, 2.5 sacks, 7 PBUs, and 2 interceptions. He finished with 24 consecutive starts.

Sims can pursue with exceptional speed and quickness and when tracks down the ball carrier, he unloads with exceptional force. He can lock onto a tight end and hold up well in coverage situations and attacks the game with fierce intensity. Sims can fly around from sideline to sideline with his awesome speed and athletic ability. Sims' speed, athletic ability, instincts and explosive tackling skills are difficult to ignore. He would fit best on an NFL team that emphasizes speed over size on defense (i.e. the Cardinals)

In the combine he ran a 4.50 did 25 reps and a 41” vertical jump. He is 5’ 11 1/8” 234 lbs.
He is most compared to Derrick Brooks who is the same size and also attended Florida State. One of his biggest Cardinal’s fan is Anquan Boldin who is encouraging the Cards to pick Sims.
So I may be the minority but do like him with the #10 pick.

But you forgot he is one big collision away from La La land. Can't take the chance with the #10 pick.

Hey where'd everybody go?!

watching the playoffs!

Anyways... let's see... Rated the # 2 LB in the draft... Weak side Lb which is a huge position of need for us. Brings speed, athleticism and nastiness to our defense. Comes from a winning program in which he the leader of the defense. Immediately has some comradare with existing players.. (Quan and Dockett).

What more do you need?

His potential is about as high as any other player you would pick at #10. I am not saying he should be the pick, but as long as he grades out medically (which he has according to numerous team doctors) then I would'nt be terribly upset.

Concussion risk, woman beating, workout warrior, non-producing college LB. How many more negatives do you need?

Concussion risk - medically cleared by team doctors
Woman beating - taking a story and running with it don't cha think?
Workout warrior -Please define.
non producing college LB - can't argue with

Obviously the guy is a work in progress, but aren't all college players? How many can match the athletic ability this kid has? He could add another dimension to our defense with his speed and quickness type mentality.

I would almost guarantee that if we can get him to play more under control he could be more productive and less concussion prone.

Again I am not advocating him being the pick I just really wouldn't be all that upset with it.

What's with the OLB being a position of need? It is about 6 or 7th for the team IMHO. If we want a guy with potential, let's pick one at a position we need them (QB or OT). Heck OLB isn't even the weakest LB position. I'd take an uprade at MLB before I began to worry about WLB.

Huff made several plays. 9 tackles for loss (lead team), 1 sack, 1 INT and a couple of pass defenses.

1st--Concussions don't go away...the problem progresses over time and you become more likely to hurt yourself.
2nd--No...by attacking a woman, he ran with it all by himself.
3rd--When you have the 4th (non-producing college LB) added to awesome combine numbers, you get a workout warrior--a guy who shoots up the charts because of that infamous 'potential'.

Sure, all college players are works in progress, but there are guys that are far less works-in-progress, or guys with much higher potential, that we can take. And athletic ability a football player does NOT make. In fact, that's exactly why I don't like the kid--it seems as if the only thing to hang his hat on is athletic ability. It didn't particularly help him make plays in college, but dangit, he's athletic!

The draft is an inexact science of probabilities/not definites.

Nothing's for certain. Evaluating a player all boils down to percentages with a few hunches mixed in.

Drafting Sims will not be without considerable risk. But that doesn't mean that the team who selects him might not wind up with a perennial Pro Bowl linebacker.

You roll the dice and take your chances. If you're a GM who drafts Sims, and he becomes a Year 1 medical reject (or felon) shame on you. If you don't draft him and he leads his pro team to a Super Bowl, you'll forever be known as "the guy who blew the Sims pick." But if you draft him and he becomes a Pro Bowl player, you're a genius.

I believe the later you draft, the less risky a pick like Sims becomes. But #10 is a bit dicey. I wouldn't do it.

I think he grades out similar to a player you could select at number 24 in the first round. If the Cardinals are committed to him or an OLB in round one then trade down and stockpile additional picks. He just doesn't seem like a top 10 choice in my opinion. Arizona has reached for top picks in the past: like Johnson and Pace.

Gaining 10+ LBs for the combine when his playing weight is closer to 220, thats one way.

Wait, I thought that there was already an Ernie Sims thread

The OFFICIAL "I don't want Ernie Sims" Thread.

:)

I tried to make this a pro Ernie Sims thread but only got one to help support that idea (Clif). Looks like the majority don't want the Cards to take him at #10. Truthfully, who knows what the heck the Cards will do at #10:shrug:
