While NFL free agency has slowed way down, the Indianapolis Colts still have their eyes on who is available and might be looking to make an addition.
On the latest episode of 'Behind the Colts,' which is produced by the Indianapolis Colts, GM Chris Ballard mentioned that the additions of Cam Bynum and Charvarius Ward provided them with some newfound flexibility going into the NFL draft. He also added that there are still some free agents out there who have the Colts' attention.
“No question (with) the secondary (signings), it doesn’t force us to go after or take a guy high if we don’t have him valued that way," said Ballard via Stampede Blue. "It does offer some flexibility. We got work to do. I mean there’s still some free agents out there that we’ve got our eye on.”
Salary cap-wise, the Colts rank in the middle of the pack at the moment, with $22.05 million in available cap space, according to Over the Cap. Now, not all of that is spendable with incoming cap expenses coming down the road, such as signing the incoming draft class, but it's also not as if any additions at this point are going to break the bank either, so there is room for an addition or two before the draft.
In terms of who the Colts might have their eyes on, well, that's the big question, isn't it?
If we look at team needs, bolstering their depth along the offensive and defensive lines should still be on Ballard's radar. The Colts also need to add competition at linebacker for that starting spot next to Zaire Franklin, and even with Cam Bynum, the safety room is still a bit thin.
When it comes to tight end, the team's biggest need, finding that impact presence is going to come in the draft, but perhaps adding a veteran presence to the room is still on their radar.
With help from Spotrac, here are the top remaining free agents at some of those aforementioned positions of need:
Defensive line: Calais Campbell, DeMarcus Walker, John Cominsky, John Jenkins, Jerry Hughes, Foley Fatukasi, Von Miller, Matthew Judon, Preston Smith, Za'Darius Smith
Tight end: Gerald Everett, Mo Alie-Cox, Marcedes Lewis, Jordan Akins, CJ Uzomah
Linebacker: CJ Mosley, Isaiah Simmons, Kyzir White, Erick Kendricks
Safety: Marcus Williams, Justin Simmons, Rayshawn Jenkins, Jordan Whitehead, Julian Blackmon, Quandre Diggs
Offensive line: Brandon Scherff, Joe Noteboom, Shaq Mason, Tyron Smith, David Andrews, Jedrick Wills, George Fant, Will Hernandez, Dalton Risner
