Green tapping former Viking assistants to fill staff

New Cardinals coach Dennis Green has been busy the past two days interviewing candidates for his staff, and at least two positions appear to be filled.

Cincinnati receivers coach Alex Wood, who was at the Cardinals' Tempe facility Tuesday, is the leading candidate to become the offensive coordinator, and former Vikings strength and conditioning coach Steve Wetzel has been hired for the same position in Arizona.

Bob Rogucki, the Cardinals' strength and conditioning coach the past 14 seasons, was informed Monday morning that his contract would not be renewed. He is one season short of qualifying for his NFL pension.

Green, who coached the Minnesota Vikings from 1992 to 2001, declined to comment on specific candidates.

The staff will be composed of coaches with different backgrounds, Green said, including people who have worked for him before. "All of them will be good teachers," he said.

Among those expected to join the staff are Richard Solomon and Carl Hargrave, who coached defensive backs and running backs, respectively, under Green in Minnesota.

The Cardinals also have interest in Kansas City tight ends coach Keith Rowen as the team's offensive line coach. Rowen coached the Vikings offensive line from 1994-96.

Wood played running back at Iowa when Green was the running backs/receivers coach and he coached quarterbacks for the Vikings from 1999 to 2002. He was a college coach for 21 years prior to joining the Vikings, including four seasons as the head coach at James Madison, where he compiled a 23-22 record.

In Minnesota, Wood tutored quarterback Daunte Culpepper.

In Cincinnati this year, Wood's starting receivers had career years in every category. Chad Johnson is starting in the Pro Bowl with 90 catches and an AFC-leading 1,355 yards. He scored 10 touchdowns. Peter Warrick caught 79 passes and had seven touchdown receptions.

ESPN analyst Sean Salisbury interviewed this week for the Cardinals quarterbacks coaching position, but there's no indication yet if he will take the job.

Kirby Wilson, former running backs coach with Tampa Bay, and Pete Rodriguez, former special-teams coach with Seattle, also interviewed for jobs this week.

He should be able to get one more year on an NFL team.

Telling the truth that he was the Cards strength coach may not be a good thing.

As great as the Bengals receivers were this year, I think Jerry Sullivan did once heckuva job with us. Wish we'd kept him in that capacity. :(

Thats too bad for him, but this is business. I don't want a coach that will keep someone for another year to be "nice". I'm glad that Green is running this team like a business. It's about time someone did.

All in all, everything I read is fantastic! Sounds like we will finally be getting a real staff in here. Guys that have real experiance and guys who know how to teach and have had success elsewhere. These are HUGE steps. I couldn't be happier. Green is really on the ball and not wasting any time at all. He's been making great moves thus far.

ActingWild As great as the Bengals receivers were this year, I think Jerry Sullivan did once heckuva job with us. Wish we'd kept him in that capacity.

Sullivan no doubt did a great job w/ Boston in 2001. He is highly regarded and many think he is the best WR coacn in the league. However, I have a few bones to pick w/ him.

One is his infatuation w/ Bryan Gilmore!!!??? I don't understand it. Mind you Gilmore may someday turn out to be a good receiver someday but, if he wasn't anymore productive w/ supposedly the best coach in the leauge when is he? Also, supposedly he never did like Kevin Kasper. From what I saw of Kasper in what, a third of a season w/ the Cards, I was much more impressed w/ his effort and performance than Gilmore's. I would be interested to see his Cardinal career numbers compared to Gilmore's. My hunch is that Kasper's might be better.

One more thing, Mac said that he cut Poole 4 times. Why was that? Gilmore was kept and Poole was cut??? I know that they are 2 different types of receivers but still... Where was Sully when it came time to decide on keeping Poole or not? Did Sullivan want him but Mac overrode him on that? Just some food for thought.

One season short of penions! Someone needs to step up and give this guy a job.

I read a lot of post about these assistants we hire or may hire. I know next to nothing about any of them. Where does all this info come from?

True. I don't quite get the infatuation with Gilmore and why Kasper wasn't kept (The guy simply made plays). I'm not sure if that was a Mac call or Sullivan call though.

From what I remember, Kasper absolutely LOVED having Sullivan coach him, so you'd think they had a good relationship (I remember Kasper using an illustration along the lines that all the other WR coaches he had used giant bold strokes, while Sullivan used an exacto knife...very precise..and that he had learned more with Jerry than everyone else combined). Can't argue with what he did in Detroit as well.

Anyway, wish we'd kept him, but having a completely clean slate may have been exactly what this team needed.

Prediction

Denny will (a) continue to bring in his own guys, (b) wait til they're all in place and then (c) call everyone together and (d) welcome them to "the way it's gonna be."

There will not be time for anyone on the squad to remember those thrilling days of yesteryear. It will be a new day and a new program. Period.

I think that will be Denny's MO.
