McGinnis' favorite play, Missablocka goes in motion and then stops right where the Cards are going to run the ball. The RB then crashes into Joel's back for no gain.

Player evaluation is hard

Mackovica had good triangle numbers, was a smart kid and came from a physical, run oriented team in Nebraska. A bunch of things all lining up to suggest he would be a good blocking fullback in the NFL.

Just didnt happen though.

I'm not trying to make a case for Mak being an all pro FB, but I don't put nearly as much of the blame on him as most of you. I watched him on dozens of occasions run a lead block into a gap, only to see Pitt, Jones or whoever, run into a mass of humanity in a different one. Now if I'm a betting man, I'd wager that Mak, being a 4.0 academic All-American was probably hitting the right hole, or read that the gap called was filled and was trying to get positive yards for the play. I saw on numerous occasions him shaking his head walking back to the huddle after he'd smacked a guy about 4 yards down field and if the RB had the presence of mind to follow him instead of slamming into a pile humanity, they would have had nice gains.

At Nebraska, his backs knew he was smarter than they were and they just followed him. He knew the offenses as well as a coach, and if things weren't there, he could find a crease some where for positive yards.

Thanks for the note Andy... I was just about to polish off a bottle of Jack...now I might make it through the weekend! Hell, I would have to cancel my tickets and give up my deposit if this happened!

Your argument might have more weight if Missablocka had gone on to some success after leaving the Cards, but he never played in the NFL again.

Ah, Lars, we all have our biases. Mak looked like a dwarf straight out of Lord Of The Rings and played like I imagine Dukie Howser would have. His GPA relates to nothing in football.

Mak was a complete bust. Couldn't play a lick.

In the last few weeks we have mentions of Makovicka, Barron Tanner, Ross K., Larry Foster, and Brad Ottis. Ah , the good ole days. All we need now is a bring back Bobby Newcombe mention.

Oh, now you've done it. Newcombe was a Husker too. Lars has him in Canton by now. :)

Makovicka was the most unathletic player I've ever seen in a Cards practice. I remember watching the FBs one day up at Flag. They did that rope drill, and I don't think Mak hit it clean once. Then they did a sled drill and every guy was driving the sled EXCEPT Makovicka. He'd hit that thing and those stubby legs would churn away and it wouldn't move more than three inches. By the third time through, I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes. And this was our STARTING FB!

Surely being a Cards fan is an experience unmatched in the sports world.

Extremely dissapointing that you didn't include Starkey in that list. Why not add in Ray Thompson for fun.

I once had a fantasy team that had such a bad week that Joel was my top scorer.

And silly me didn't start him.

I did too. I remember being excited.

Heavy offensive line designed to press the line (note the design, not the achievement) and a run blocking FB from a school known for rushing.

Too bad what's on paper rarely transitions to the field.
