1. Kurt Warner is the best and most accurate Cardinal QB I have ever seen. In some way I think this past season was his best. His total passing on the season yardage was less, but his accuracy in so many of the games---particularly in the first halfs of games---was off the charts. Plus, this year the Cardinals had a running game, which meant Warner didn't have to pass as often.

2. His performance in the playoff game versus Green Bay was the most spectacular and clutch as I have seen from a Cardinal QB. There have been plenty of other unforgettable performances like the Carolina playoff game and his games this year versus Jacksonville, Chicago, New York and Minnesota. But, the very thought of 5 TD and 4 incompletions in a playoff game remains goose bump inducing and awe inspiring.

3. I thought it was curious last year when he went from pondering retirement to wanting a two year contract. In his press conference after he signed the 2 year $23M deal with $15M guaranteed, he looked awkward and uncomfortable talking about the money. At the time it made me wonder if the new contract was a means in which to be financially rewarded and compensated for making a mere $5M per the preceding years while taking the Cardinals to new and unprecedented heights. Thus, it did occur to me at the time that he very well could retire after one year of the new contract.

4. However, the way he was playing this year and the way the team was continuing to accomplish things we Cardinal fans haven't seen since the 1970s, I was lulled into a comfort zone believing that Warner would not only finish out his contract, but that he might wish to play beyond next year, a la Brett Favre.

5. Is it just me or did any of you think Warner was making way too much of his concussion? Yes, of course I was concerned, but he did not have the look of someone seriously concussed...in fact, on the sidelines in the second half of the Rams game he was still in uniform, and he looked as if he could go back in at any moment. I am not saying he was faking, don't get me wrong. But, with the game well in hand, it just seemed that he was taking a smart hiatus.

6. It surprised me a great deal to hear that he was fine all week in practice the following week to then learn on game day versus the Titans that he was now suffering blurred vision and thus was deactivated for the game.

7. The next week he confessed that he has had blurred vision many times before and not as the result of a concussion. Then he goes and plays a fantastic game versus the Vikings---a team that quite frankly would strike fear in any QB's mind because of their pass rush (best in the league). Warner was tough as nails in this game (as always) and locked in.

8. When it was reported by ESPN on the advent of the playoffs that Warner was planning to retire, I felt as if I had been sucker punched. Like I said, I had been lulled into thinking he was at least good for the two years on his contract, and possibly beyond (he even mentioned that possibility in his post-season interview following the Saints game in the Cardinals' clubhouse). Not only did I feel sucker punched, I felt suddenly acutely aware that THIS season was suddenly DO or DIE. All along I had been thinking that next year would be the better chance. Thus, even as a fan I started feeling a sense of added pressure and desperation.

9. What exacerbated the situation even worse was that Warner did very little to diffuse the issue in his various interviews. He talked candidly at times about "the grind of the season" and "not making an emotional decision based on one game." Sure, I got that. But, quite honestly, I was very disappointed that Warner at the time didn't simply insist that all he was thinking about was the playoffs---and nip the discussion in the bud. Instead he seemed very recpetive to holding the conversations.

10. This is what bothers me most. Not only was all this Warner talk a distraction for me, a mere fan, but it had to be distracting for the players and had to have affected them in a similar way in the sense that suddenly this year became DO or DIE. No one will ever know the exact answer to this, but, giving up 10 TDs in 12 possessions for any playoff team would seem to be an egregious aberration. At times, our players looked like they were jogging around in a fog. I think they were reacting to feeling too much pressure. And I think the coaching was affected as well. Whiz always preaches being relaxed and focused...well, being in a funk is not exactly being relaxed and focused.

11. Following the season in his interview Warner lamented the daily and weekly grind, adding that the only fun is "the three hours on Sunday." But, he also said that "my body feels better than it has in the last three years." Yesterday on Sportscenter, Rick Reilly reported that Warner told him "this is the sorest I have ever felt." Which is which?

Warner also said that he was tired of facing the scrutiny from the media and fans after bad games. That remark I found particularly moot, because besides the Carolina and the SF games, Warner was pretty much an indomitable and often an impeccable force all season long.

I thought Warner had more help this year than years before. And his game had evolved into a new dimension...once his Achilles' heel was holding onto the ball too long...this year he was consistently decisive and spot on in his timing. To me, he has never played played better.

12. In all honesty, once the playoffs started amidst the rumors that Warner was going to retire---and after seeing that Warner allowed for the conversations---it took a great dea of the excitement and fun a way for me as a fan---as I said I was feeling a sense of sudden desperation that I hadn't anticipated---and on top of it all, a sense of profound sadness that this was the last occasion to watch the best Cardinal QB of my lifetime.

To watch Warner prostrate and gasping for breath after the shot he took was unbearable and it exacerbated and magnified every little tingle of fear in my bones that kept telling me this is indeed it, it's over. Yet, to watch him trot back onto that field in the second half, knowing that the game looked already beyond the hope of any miracle, was to me on a par with one of my other most cherished sports moments---watching---as a 16 year old kid---Willis Reed limp out of the tunnel and onto the court to lead the NY Knicks to a World Championship.

Kurt Warner and everything about him inspires me. I cannot thank him enough for lifting my heart out of the perennial duldrums that only a long-lasting Cardinal fan can even fathom. To me, Kurt Warner is a hero---not just for being the QB who led the woeful Cardinals out of the darkness, but for being such a wonderful and exemplary person.

To hear Rick Reilly last night say that Kurt said, "the game is just not that fun anymore" was like taking a dagger and piercing my heart.

Well, Kurt, regardless of what you decide, YOU were the one more than any other who made the game FUN for me and so many of us much beleaguered Cardinal fans to watch. You brought the FUN back. And I just hope and pray that you can find a way to make it fun again, so you can relish in our fun.

You said that a player shouldn't go before it's too soon---well, after the season you just turned in---you continue to set new standards and accomplish brand new things---all of which are so fun for us fans to experience.

I hope for the encore, Kurt. I hope the real fun is still ahead.

My best,

Mitch

There haven't been many stars who chose to leave the game at a time when they were still performing at the top of their profession. Jim Brown. Barry Sanders...

In my opinion, Kurt has done more, contributed more and accomplished more than any other single player in Cardinal history. Sure, there are players who put in more seasons as a Cardinal... Jim Hart will probably never be replaced as the greatest Cardinal QB ever. However, Hart never got the team to a Super Bowl. In fact, Hart never won a post-season game... And he certainly didn't inherit a team that was coming off the decades worth of epic futility that Kurt did. And Hart had the benefit of playing in St Louis, where the Cards were a tradition, loved and supported... I guess you can make the case that moving into UoP gave the Cards that home field experience the franchise once held in St. Louis, however if not for Kurt turning the team around and as Mitch says - bringing FUN back to the franchise - the move to UoP would have been virtually inconsequential.

I only want Kurt back in uniform if he is truly ready to give it all once last time... The fact that he seems so up in the air about it concerns me. I want his full conviction and full commitment to getting this team back to the Super Bowl. I do believe we have a shot if he returns.
If he chooses to leave, god bless the man and his family. And yes - thanks for bringing pride and respect, and packed houses and FUN back to Cards games Kurt!!!

Very good post Walt. I will miss his expertise back there. I don't think it's the end of the playoffs if he retires. Some others will have to step it up, which this team is capable of. This is going to be a active and interesting off-season.

Whatever you do, thanks Kurt for a good ride. Maybe just one more?!

Enjoyed your post Walter. I hope Kurt comes back as well, but if he decides to hang it up I wish him the best. He has been a great player as well as great person for this team. I would love to see him involved with the Cards in some way for years to come.

You know, Gary, Warner taught this team how to win. Whiz set the tone, but Warner carried this team on his back. I so hope he's got another year in him. Thanks to him the team now knows how to win on the road. Who would have thought that? Anything is possible with Warner.

Warner has impressed me on so many levels. When he was benched for Matty in 06 under Denny Green he showed nothing but decency and class in fully embracing the mentor role. In retrospect that was one of the stupidest moves in NFL history and Kurt certainly knew it but you never heard a sour note from the guy. Whatever he does, I'm just proud we got to go on this ride with him these past years. I darn sure hope he comes back but whatever. He gets my full respect either way.

I personally think Warner views this defense as WAY too FUBAR to make it worth another year.

He knows he can't go off EVERY game and light up the scoreboard, and that's basically what it would take to make another championship run.

Mr. Warner is very astute and no slouch in negotiations. IMO he will wait a while and see what is up with our Defense. He has the leverage. We fix the D he stays we dont he goes.

Its easy to "quit" a few days after the last game, just like its easy to quit smoking right after you put out your last cigarette.

I don't know if KW stays or goes, but I promise you he will feel different about the situation in June vs. now.

Only with Warner do we have another window of opportunity in 2010. Without Warner, we rebuild.

I am just wondering how much say Brendra will have in this decision. If she truely leaves it up to Kurt, I think he will return because artp hit it on the head.

And I think Kurt will want that one last try.

As always, Mitch, thanks. Great read.

I don't agree about the added pressure to win on the team, and how Kurt handled it, however. The media brings up crap all the time. This all came up last year as well. I think it was all a roll-his-eyes here-we-go-again-response. It was what is was - media talk. I doubt it affected a thing in the locker room.

It's too bad you felt this added burden, and couldn't enjoy the games as much. I've felt this way before, and it just isn't enjoyable. I felt that way watching the Detroit game. I felt like everything to lose and nothing to gain, especially watching that lead dwindle.

He says he will make a decision in the next few weeks. Kinda hard to improve the defense before FA and the draft

What told me it might be over was when they flashed to Brenda Warner and the look on her face after that hit when Kurt was flat on the ground.

Sometimes we think what can Kurt be thinking when we maybe should ask what are Brenda and the kids thinking.

It's obvious she would like him to retire and the only thing keeping Kurt from saying it is that he doesn't want to make her the bad guy in the fans mind.

See if I'm Warner this is what I do. I would pull a Favre and put some extra pressure on the FO and tell them I'm going to sit back and wait to see how things play out this offseason before I make a decision no matter which way I may be leaning. You know he wants Q back. Warner is really the only player on the team with any type of leverage to be able to say anything at this point. Too bad he isn't that type of guy. This team is only a couple of key moves away from being either a championship contender once again or becoming an also ran. If I'm Kurt and the FO drags their feet or doesn't make the right moves that are to my liking, I'm out.

Obviously we know that his decision will be heavily based on talking with his wife and family. But he's also going to be talking with Graves and Whiz. If they can assure them that they are going to make the moves necessary to really give it one more shot, it may affect things.

I'm not so sure about the "Brenda pressure". She's wanted him to retire for a while now and he keeps coming back. I'm sure he will take everything into consideration but what it boiled down to last year was he simply wanted to keep playing.

His boys want him to keep playing at the level he's playing at while his girls all want him to retire and Brenda says she's staying out of it as Kurt and GOD will settle it between themselves.

He knows her heart already. She knows he has to live with his own heart though. Not hers.Whiz will have a ton of selling to do to make Kurt think we have a shot next year.We all know anything can happen.Just look at this year.We could have gone higher and farther if we just could have stayed healthier as a team from the start with Cody Brown and with Ware and all the rest like Gerald Hayes' back and Dansby's shoulders.Okeafors back too.Patrick and many, many more. Both kickers had opposite groin injuries. That was weird.WE CARDINALS fans know what we had though.A team that could have made a run if totally together.:)

My guess is that his decision will be delayed. Any negotiator knows that you dont make any decision until you absolutely have too. He shouldn't have to do anything until a week prior to the first minicamp. There will be plenty of cap dollars to use with several iminent departures for his salary to be an issue.
If he comes out and and retires in the next two weeks that tells me his mind was made up after the Rams game.
Any way it shakes out the gentlman has certainly earned my respect as both a football player and human being. Hopefully for the long term good of the organization he moves upstairs to the front office when he decides to hang it up.
Now if he could just be convinced to run for the US Senate! If Hayworth can why not Mr. Warner?

Still, if he is asking God to take the desire to play football away if He wants Kurt to retire, that says to me Kurt still wants to play, at least when he made that statement. And he's got to be looking at his 40 year old counterpart playing in the NFC championship game, too.
