The Diamondbacks should take a look at him (Alex Sanchez). He's relativley young, great speed, potential gold glover, and can have a decent batting average.

I'd rather see us trade Terrero and get Sanchez as our #4 OF. Sanchez is a great "Project" for a team. Reminds me of Juan Pierre, without the bunt.

Opinions?

I don't see this "decent batting average" you speak of.... plus the guy really can't bunt. What good is speed when he can't get base *cough*Tony Womack*cough*

He's not a guy that will bat .300, but he'll bat .270 or so. Not GREAT but solid for a #4 OFer.

Womack still stole 20+ bases a season. If one thing our team will struggle to do it is steal bases. Our fastest guy is who? Counsell? Eww.

I said he can't bunt ;) Reminds me of Juan Pierre, without the bunt.

The report from Detroit

The Tigers made a big decision about centerfield Tuesday -- and immediately left themselves with another.

The club released starting centerfielder Alex Sanchez, with no heir apparent in place.

"Defensively, we feel that he wasn't going to be a championship-type player," said manager Alan Trammell, who called the transaction "a pretty big move."

Trammell didn't name a replacement for Sanchez. The two prime candidates are power hitter Craig Monroe, who primarily has been a corner outfielder in the majors, and young speedster Nook Logan, who has started 41 games in center for the Tigers. Trammell said non-roster outfielders Dewayne Wise and Alexis Gomez also would be considered for center.

The Tigers don't have anyone with extensive major league experience in center, but general manger Dave Dombrowski said he doesn't plan to trade for an established centerfielder.

"We are very happy with what we've seen in camp," Dombrowski said of the centerfielders on hand.

Dombrowski seemed to dismiss any bid for former Gold Glove centerfielder Mike Cameron, who has become the Mets' rightfielder after that club signed centerfielder Carlos Beltran.

Monroe, also a challenger to Rondell White in left, once was a regular in center in the minors. Logan also has played it regularly in the minors. In a twist, Monroe and Logan each know the American League's premier centerfielder, Minnesota's Torii Hunter; Monroe planned to phone Hunter on Tuesday to get some tips on playing the position. (See Tigers Corner, 4D.)

Centerfield is an especially crucial position for the Tigers because of the vast outfield at Comerica Park. Trammell didn't rule out Logan playing center at home to cover Comerica's acreage, and Monroe playing center on the road.

Away from Comerica, Monroe would have less ground to cover and generally wouldn't have to drive the ball as far for a home run.

Sanchez led all centerfielders with nine errors last season and often showed subpar range. The club failed in repeated attempts to replace him in the off-season, then worked hard with him on his defense this spring. Trammell said Tuesday that he didn't see the "energy" he wanted from Sanchez, 28.

I don't think we really need a "project". And as far as speed goes, if they want a backup OF with speed they can just bring up Marlan Williams.
