Time To Look At Some Running Backs In Case Beanie Is Not Ready For Start of Season

It is time to look for some insurance in case Beanie is not ready to go at the beginning of the NFL season. There are several veterans (Warrick Dunn, Rudi Johnson, DeShaun Foster, Deuce McAllister, etc.) that have not been signed plus Ryan Torain who was recently released by Denver. I would at least take a look. It's my opinion that Hightower, Howling, and Wright would not be enough to start the season.

I am shocked that ASUhoopsnut wants to take a flyer on Ryan Torian.

Shocked. :)

If we did have to sign a running back to fill in for Beanie for a while, I'd have to think it'll be a veteran. We have enough young, unproven RB's. I'd hope they go after a guy like Dunn or McAllister so that they can tutor the youngsters.

Yeah, at this point you can't expect anything from Wells at the start of the season, meaning we will need a vet RB in here. If he's healthy and back to some of his form, I'd say McAllister.

McAllister has a four game suspension due to taking illegal supplements.
Teams will stay away from him.

First, Torian is vastly overrated. Sorry ASSU fans. And he is coming off of a very serious injury. I would take all of our running backs, including Vincent, over him.

Second, this is a complete overreaction to the situation.

I think both Foster and Dunn would fit in very nicely into the Cardinals offense.

Unless Wells will be out for more then a game, there is no need to bring in another guy. Why bring in a veteran whos contract would be fully gauranteed. Waste of money.

First game of the year with just Hightower and our passing game would be more then just fine, then sign a veteran who after game one their contract would no longer be gauranteed, if Wells still isnt healthy, buts thats still a month a way so no need to make a reactionary signing just yet. I mean it isnt like any of those guys you mentioned are flying off the shelves and we need to get one now before they sell out. I bet 4 out of 5 of those guys you mentioned will still have no team for game 1 of the season, guys like that dont find teams until after game one when their contracts are no longer gauranteed becuase of their veteran status.

I don't know about you guys but it usually takes longer than 2 weeks to get over a sprained ankle. It all reality it has only been 18 days. I know it sucks, but I'm not concerned about it.. just dissappointed from a fan perspective and from his as a player. I know he wants to get out there so bad, but they have got to be smart about it. Bringing in another back in this offense is a waste of time. I also think you have to cut somebody if it makes it to the regular season.

Wells will be fine in time, and it gives LSH a better shot to make the roster in the meantime.

Hightower and Wright can handle the load just fine.
Keep in mind, the bar to beat in terms of last year's production isn't insurmountable, and the running game only needs to be good enough to be better than what it was last year.

Most of you know I tend to avoid prematurely judging any player, but...

I am getting very nervous feelings about Beanie and his future here.

It's not based on anything other than that there always seems to be certain players who turn out to be chronically "unlucky."

By no means am I writing off Beanie (and sure hope I'm wrong - it's probably just "the old Cardinal way of thinking" on my part) but I can't seem to shake that eery feeling...

I have to totally agree with Joe on this. It is far to early for knee jerking on this. Time is actually on our side for this.

Yeah, time might be on our side, but ankle injuries are usually devastating for running backs. If it was truly the little ding the team originally claimed, he would have been back in a week as they said he would. Okay, he was out 17 days...NO PROBLEM...it's the preseason. Buuut...then, if it had been a little ding, he wouldn't have been so hampered in what he could do when he finally did get into another practice. And then, he re-injures the ankle.

Yeah, too early to panic and all, but anyone who says they aren't concerned at this point is either an idiot, lying, or selling something :)

Shaun Alexander's floating around out there and still looking for work. He won't be able to carry the load but in this offense he wouldn't be overworked.

Okay, there's a reason no team in the league is talking to him but as far as I remember, he never had any leg problems it was his wrist. As a depth/stop-gap situation it might not be the worst idea.

Alexander was a disaster last season for the Redskins. He looked his age and dint have the vision and moves that he used to have. Why he was picked up so late and why he was cut so early.

There is no tread left on the tire.

i think we should cut our losses, release Beanie, and bring Edge back. You knwo thos pre-season ankle sprains are usually career threatening :bang: .

I don't necessarily disagree but I would much rather have Whis and Grimm take a look in person than rely on his time in Washington(in a hypothetical situation).

To be fair to Alexander he only got 11 carries in 4 games. He's certainly not MVP level anymore but he did have a couple pretty good games as recently as '07 when he was coming off the injury.

Plus, if he was ever going to be motivated he could at least help stick it to the Seahawks.

p.s. I don't really care too much, just using the ol' imagination.

I don't get it. No one is talking about cutting Wells and slapping the bust label on him. The team did sign a WR yesterday though because a couple of guys have gotten injured so why wouldn't they take the same route with a running back? I like Hightower and all but the thought of entering any regular season game with just Timmy, Wright and LSH is downright scary. What's the risk of signing a veteran backup in the next week or so if Wells' injury continues to linger?
