i think we should cut our losses, release Beanie, and bring Edge back. You knwo thos pre-season ankle sprains are usually career threatening :bang: .

Cbus, relax. No one's throwing in the towel with Wells at this point. I still think (hope) he can heal up for the start of the regular season, and contribute throughout the season, because we need him to. All anyone is doing is expressing how frustrated and worried they are. You don't seem concerned in the least, which reads to me like blind Buckeye homerism. There is a LOT to be concerned with here. It's not disasterous yet, but it sure could get there.

Stout, do you think Beanie's injury issue is horrific yet?

Yeah, time might be on our side, but ankle injuries are usually devastating for running backs. If it was truly the little ding the team originally claimed, he would have been back in a week as they said he would. Okay, he was out 17 days...NO PROBLEM...it's the preseason. Buuut...then, if it had been a little ding, he wouldn't have been so hampered in what he could do when he finally did get into another practice. And then, he re-injures the ankle.

Yeah, too early to panic and all, but anyone who says they aren't concerned at this point is either an idiot, lying, or selling something :)

You need to look at it in the right context though. How teams and players treat injuries in preseason is completely different then how they treat them during the actual regular season.

Preseason injuries are treated with kid gloves, what might take 2 weeks to heal during preseason would only take 1 week during the regular season. What keeps one player out of a preseason game wouldnt keep them out of a regular season game.

Just like Wells did while in college, he may have been probable on the injury list every week but he still played. Dansby is first 4 years here was on the injury list every week, skipped practices during offseason, missed preseason games, but he still played in the regular season games. What makes a player limp in preseason, they just play through in the regular season.

How injuries are treat during preseason cannot be compared to what would happen in regular season.

I don't get it. No one is talking about cutting Wells and slapping the bust label on him. The team did sign a WR yesterday though because a couple of guys have gotten injured so why wouldn't they take the same route with a running back? I like Hightower and all but the thought of entering any regular season game with just Timmy, Wright and LSH is downright scary. What's the risk of signing a veteran backup in the next week or so if Wells' injury continues to linger?

First you cant compare what we did recently with the WR postition compared to the RB position. With the WR's we have 3 guys that will not play, with RB we "might" have 1. Second, we run a spread O, making us need more WR's which leads to Three, we are going through a big QB battle and need WR's for them to throw to, RB's arent in that equation.

Whats the harm?

1. Gauranteed contract given to a stop gap? And the Vets being talked about have enough years in the league where if they are on the 53 man roster to begin the season their whole contract for the year becomes gauranteed.
2. Unless Wells is on IR, who's spot on the 53 man roster is this new guy going to take?

I don't think this list is 100% up to date but it's an idea of who's out there. Wasn't J.J. cut by Denver already? I know he's got a knee problem but I'm not sure if he actually got cut.

Shaun Alexander (UFA) - Washington
J.J. Arrington (UFA) - Arizona (Signed by Denver)
B.J. Askew (UFA) - Tampa Bay
Tim Castille (ERFA) - Arizona
Jesse Chatman (UFA) - NY Jets
Daniel Coats (ERFA) - Cincinnati
P.J. Daniels (RFA) - Baltimore
Carey Davis (RFA) - Pittsburgh
DeDe Dorsey (RFA) - Cincinnati
Heath Evans (UFA) - New England
Andre Hall (ERFA) - Denver
Rudi Johnson (UFA) - Detroit
Zak Keasey (RFA) - San Francisco
Travis Minor (UFA) - St. Louis
Richard Owens (UFA) - St. Louis
Chris Perry (RFA) - Cincinnati
Michael Pittman (UFA) - Denver
Ryan Powdrell (ERFA) - Green Bay
Terrelle Smith (UFA) - Arizona
Jason Snelling (UFA) - Atlanta
Byron Storer (RFA) - Tampa Bay
Naufahu Tahi (RFA) - Minnesota
Danny Ware (RFA) - NY Giants
Leonard Weaver (UFA) - Seattle
Quincy Wilson (UFA) - Cincinnati
Don't know why Dunn and McCallister aren't on there.

Removed Neal per Mulli.

Is Wright so good that a guy like Dunn or McAllister wouldn't be an upgrade?

Yes.

There is a reason none of those guys are even close to sniffing a roster spot. They are no better then a #3 RB on 75% of the teams rosters. And your #3 RB better be able to play special teams, and neither one can. Your getting caught up in a name rather then actual value. Why sign a guy to a gauranteed contract just so they could be a #3 RB that doesnt play special teams?

Its why Derrick Brooks was told he was signed by a few teams that he had visited, they dont think he can be a starter anymore which means he would have to play special teams which Brooks cannot play.

Man was this thread premature. Beanie will be practicing today according to Wiz who just did his daily meet with the media.

Maybe deal Boldin for a top RB and possibly draft picks?

Just to continue to stir the pot.....If Wells has another "participate in individual drills but not in the team session" kind of practice, then are you a little more concerned. I don't think we're overreacting considering that he couldn't even finish a simple pass route to the flats. It's not like he they were asking him to run through an obstacle course, we're talking about running in a straight line here.

Nope. Once again, its preseason where injuries are treated with kid gloves becuase they can, its not a real game so why go full bore and play through injuries. If it were a regular season game he would have completed the route, and I know he would have because he is practicing the next day, meaning he only pulled up as a precaution. There is a reason you here that so and so sat out as a "precaution", you dont here that word during the regular season now do you.

I understand your point about not wanting to rush anyone back from injury for a meaningless game or practice but do the kid gloves stay on until Sept 13 and then all of sudden you say "Ok Beanie, now it's time to suck it up and play." I mean today will be the 18th practice since he's signed and we've yet to see him go full bore for a single one.

You guys are probably right that it's too early to start hitting the free agent market but I'm getting worried about Beanie taking it easy for a whole month and then expecting him to flip some kind of switch on the morning of the 13th and becoming a warrior. It's too early for action but it has to be a concern.

Why not, happens every year to many players from rookies all the way to veterans. It isnt an issue either becuase Wiz said in his presser today he is making Beanie practice and the injury is as the point were he just has to play through it. These guys have been playing football for years, they dont need 18 practices to flip a switch, and if they do they have far bigger issues then a bum ankle they have to play through the pain on.

Co-sign. Look at LT, the announcers were STUNNED when he actually started the first preseason game for the Chargers. He never plays in the preseason.

Now obviously he's a veteran and proven and they know he knows the system and how to block etc but the point is there are a lot of players who are held back in preseason to avoid injury risk. The problem with Beanie is he's a rookie and unproven, not a proven vet like LT who really doesn't need preseason games.

I would hope he's good to go for the 3rd preseason game, if he's not then I start to get concerned.

Translation?

We will see Beanie on Saturday.

It may be short and sweet.

But, he's playing.
