I'm normally not a Sonic Drive-In type person although once in awhile they will have something on their menu that intrigues me. However, I usually let the opportunity pass because I do not know what is expected especially in regard to tipping. Also I'm not sure if you go to the window to order or wait for someone to come to the car.

Has anyone mastered the Sonic experience?

you wait in your car.

I always tip them a dollar or two unless its just a drink, then i say keep the change. if its a big order, I would do 5-10%

My girlfriend and I have had several arguments over that during the years where somone is rude in a grocery store or something and I speak up. she's always afraid the rude person will turn out to be violent which these days I guess you never know.

I say keep it up.

I need to give it a try.

In my early years they used to have picnic tables at the local Sonic which led to my confusion as to where to order.

you can sit at the tables and order on the menus by the tables, there is no way to order otherwise. Either use the drivethrough or one of the menus, you hit the red button, order and they bring you food. Each menu is like a table at a restaurant so the order will say something like "table 23" so they know who ordered it.

Most of their food is garbage but the drinks are great.

My nephew worked for Sonic for a bit, and I was shocked to learn the car hops make server wages, not minimum wage. Since finding that out, I've been more generous with tipping there.

What is the protocol for tipping when you get bad service? ... I'm talking about piss poor service.

My standard tip rate is 20%.

If service is poor (more than 10 minutes before we're greeted, drinks are occasionally empty, etc.), that goes down to 10%. If it's really bad (drinks are usually empty, other problems or rudeness), it's 5%. If it's horrible, they get a penny.

If you don't even have anyone taking your order, how much should I tip the person who brings my food?

I still tip the 20%, because the server is running food and drinks to your table, and should be checking up to make sure that you have everything you need.

My 2 cents. :)

is that true at every sonic? I have never heard that before.

I supervise three Sonic Drive-ins. All of my carhops make minimum of $5.25/hour (minimum wage is $7.25 here in Arkansas). Customers tip the carhops more often than not. The carhop's intended purpose is to deliver the food and provide service as long as the customer is on the lot. They should check back with customers and cater to their needs. Whether they fulfill that purpose depends on the location and management. Some carhop's clear $14/hour after tips. The current credit card machines do not allow for tips but an upcoming menu and software upgrade should make an allowance.

From Reddit. Ugh. They should make it very clear that they do not get full wages. most people pay at the sign with a card and do not tip.

waiters do not report all of their cash tips anyway, only credit tips are 100% reported.

Typically a food runner does the to go orders and food runners make normal wages, not tip wages.

This is why I always make a point have cash available for the tip. Trust me, they notice. ;)

This is pretty close to how we do it. Our scale also goes up more often than not when service is above and beyond. We also frequent the same places often, so those relationships tend to flourish and benefit everyone involved.

We usually tip 20-25%. More if we can and the service merits a nicer tip.

Service has to be really bad to change that. At Sweet Tomatoes, we once left zero tip because the waiter in our area NEVER greeted us, NEVER removed a plate from our table, NEVER even really looked in our direction, etc. Fine with us as it is a buffet where you can help yourself anyway. We got up to leave and the waiter ran out and caught up to us in the parking lot. I had left my hat in the booth and he returned it to me. I thanked him and he said, sarcastically "No problem. At first I thought maybe it was my tip." and ran off. I did call the location later and complained to the manager about the lack of service and the snide comment.

The one place we don't tip and I am hearing that you should is when you stay in a hotel. Does anyone here tip the cleaning crew? How much?

Agreed! When I get a massage, I pay with CC, but leave a cash tip since that is how they make more of thier money.

I don't, because I don't know who will get it. If I had some control over that, like on a cruise, or was assured it would get into the hands of the people who worked hard and cleaned my room, I wouldn't be hesitant to leave a $10 tip.

I tip my hairstylist in cash. She loves it. She's the one person I don't tip 20% on - I tip a lot more because she doesn't charge much and she does a great job every time.

in general...for an extended stay....a dollar a day for the maid,...then an additional dollar per day when you check out. That is how I do it.

Yes. Usually $5-$10/night if staying more then one night. (More if we've left a mess that will take extra time to clean.) I leave it on the dresser with a note saying "Thank you/Gracias". I also make a point to say hello to the cleaning crew/maintenance staff if I see them in the hallway. Word gets out on who the "nice" guests are and if you need something extra.....they are right there happy to help the person who made eye contact and wished them a nice day.

Having worked for tips and grown up in a tourist town.... I appreciate the work minimum wage employees do. It made me a fairly generous tipper.

Yep. I do, no matter where I stay. When I stay in Vegas, I usually leave $20 or so. All depends on how much money I have left after a weekend there, of course :p

I didn't start tipping in hotel rooms until a few years ago. Never knew about it until my dad said something about it. He travels quite a bit and let me know the protocol for it

If we're at a hotel more than a couple of days we'll leave a tip. Usually $5 a day. More if our sheets were actually changed out and we have clean towels(yes, I did stay at a hotel where they didn't give us fresh towels and we had to call them. Hell, it was the Mirage in Vegas).

This is not good.

I have found with fast food, the price of the food is almost as high as a regular restaurant. It's almost as cheap to go to a better restaurant and tip accordingly (20-25%). The minimum wage needs to be raised to $12-15 dollars an hour.

I though you were suposed to leave a penny if you were short on cash as an apology. "Sorry, the service was fine I just dont have the money for a tip."

$.02 was for bad service. You know. Giving them your 2 cents.

Am I the only one that has heard of this?

This was sent from my cell pjone so please excise any typeos or other errors.

I have always heard that the worst tip to leave is one penny - heads down.
