And then there were 75....

The Cardinals officially made their roster moves to get from 80 players to 75, including the release of safety/special teamer Keith Lewis. Undrafted rookie tackle Brandon Pearce was the only other straight release. Linebacker Cody Brown, as expected, was placed on injured reserve, ending his season, while two players were waived/injured: LB Pago Togafau, who broke his foot against the Packers Friday, and kick returner Michael Ray Garvin, who is recovering from knee surgery.

So what's the difference between released and "waved/injured"

Nothing too surprising, except for Brandon Pearce. I guess Carlton Medder is our "outside looking in" guy right now.

Aaron Fransisco is on the final 53, that much is clear as of right now.

So what's the difference between released and "waved/injured"

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this is my take about this. One of the differences in the "waived/injured" situation is, a player gets a settlement of some kind. If say a player is going to be out for another four weeks or so and is waived/injured, the team agrees to pay the player for four games or so. If the player is not put on IR, he is able to come back and play for the team after he is healed that year--i.e. it's only an injury where he is out for a month or two. I think the team has to wait six weeks from the date of the settlement to ask a player back.

Both the released and waived/injured players go through waivers to see if another team will claim them. When a player is waived/injured though, the chances of another team picking them up are usually slim, especially now at this time of cutdowns.

How the player sleeps at night?

:D

It is a lot easier to be cut because you were injured vs. not being good enough right?

30 yard average sure looked nice until LSH came in and did a one up on him. It was obvious he was gone at that point. Maybe he will get resigned to practice squad.

that's kind of what I was wondering about. Both types of cuts exposes the player waivers and the team can bring both back if they want to, but one has the excuse of "well I was injured" instead of "I just sucked."

I wonder if it is in the NFLPA that requires them to state more in depth the reason for cutting someone.....

You are thinking of PUP and combining it with a couple of other things.

Waived/Injured = Player who doesnt have enough years in the league is waived and goes through the waiver wire process. If he is picked up, end of story, if he is not picked up he goes onto our IR list. Once on the IR list we continue to pay him his normal salary and just try to sign him next year, or we give him an injury settlement, which depends on what the player and the team work out and there is no set rule on settlement compensation. Then the player is free to sign with anyone else but the team he got the settlement from.

Too bad about MRG and Pago.

I wanted to see what Ray-Garvin was about after the Pitt game. The injury and The Hyphen were the reasons for his pink slip.

As for Pago, his durability was put into question. He was a tackling machine in the three preseason games, but in both the SD and GB games, he left due to injury, so I can see the logic in that.

So what you're essentially saying is that MRG and Pago can not play for the Cardinals this season. They're either on another team or on our IR? Considering that neither player is actually expected to miss the entire season, wouldn't it make more sense to just cut them so you could at least have the chance to sign them if someone get's injured? Or is this just a move about keeping them "in the system" for next year?

First Waived is difference from Cut. Players with less then 4 accredited season get waived which means they go through the waiver wire process first. 4 or more accredited seasons and you get cut which means they dont have to go through the waiver wire.

As to your question injured players cannot just be cut, they have to go straight to IR or given an injury settlement. Only healthy players can just be cut, and if they are injured and cut they can file an injury greivance.

Thank you for clarifying Joe. Also, when a player goes IR, he can't play for that team the rest of the year right? If a player makes a settlement, and he is physically able say in one month, he can be signed by the team that year again, right? (after the six week waiting period). Also, once a player is healthy, we can be signed by any team, doesn't have to wait.

Question 1 - Correct

Question 2 - No, you are confusing the PUP list with IR list. IR list there is no such thing as a waiting period. Once injury settlement is reached he cannot be re-signed by the team again. Although, I think they could still be signed to the PS, a loop hole the last CBA didnt close up. I could be wrong on that one though.

Question 3 - He can if isnt on the IR list. You can be healthy and still be on the IR list. Its just that you werent healthy when you originally went on the list. The only way the player can play again is force the team to give him a settlement so he can sign elsewhere.

Thanks again for clarifying--now another question. Does a player on IR get his regular season pay? If so, why would a player want to make a settlement?

I looked this one up and talked to an agent, and this one is incorrect. A player can resign by the team he settled with after six games, plus the regular season games he was paid for or settled. So if a player was only paid for two games in the settlement, he could come back by week 8, roster or practice squad.

LMAO... only you Mitch would scream "I want Vallejo back!"... as if the guy is our key to a championship...

:D

I seriously doubt Mitch meant it this way--only that there's a chance of getting a way cheaper, better tackle backup out there once he's healed.
