What???

An elite QB taking less than 1/2 of what he is worth?

NFLPA has to be pissed.

No doubt they're pissed, but it shouldn't affect other top-tier QBs when they negotiate new deals. This deal kicks in when he's 38. Flacco is still going to get major scratch. Rodgers will get much more next year.

the guy continues to show that not only is he a great QB, but he cares more about winning then anyone in the game. Taking a 10 million dollar per year pay cut so that money can be spent elsewhere? unheard of.

Just makes me think that he's making it up elsewhere. No way do I give the Patriots the benefit of doubt on something shady like this.

According to the NFLAM crew, specifically Eric Davis, the extension is added to the previous contract which nets Brady $20M+ per year until he's 40...guaranteed.

Love me some Tom Brady. And I love how the Jets gave Sanchez more.

They were dissecting it on Sirius this am: its the most guaranteed money since Megatron's deal. He may be underpaid but its all guaranteed. From the ages of 37-40.

Makes me think the Patriots are hoping for a couple more title runs before Brady has to hang 'em up and are rolling the dice. I mean, if he retires at 38, that guaranteed money is going to escalate and put them in cap hell for a year or two, right?

Brady has said he wants to play to 40. Note: not arguing, please don't get mad. :)

Yeah ... I think this is pretty reasonable for both sides .... he's taking less money over the twilight of his career, but still getting paid pretty well ... on the flip side, he's also just guaranteed a revenue stream until he's 40

Could work out better than taking a bigger per year number with a lower guarantee and having your body crap out and get cut before you realize those larger numbers

In all honesty, we should approach Fitzgerald regarding something like this in the next couple years. His deal becomes very restrictive the next three years totalling 18mil, 21.25mil and 18mil over those years.

in all honesty, I have no idea why Fitz would do this. NE has shown the ability to put a winner on the field consistently when Tom has given them a break. We've shown an inability to much of anything to put a winner on the field, so if I'm Fitz, I'm pretty damn reluctant to give up a ton of money to give back to a team that's shown no idea what to do with it.

I don't see Fitz giving any "twilight/hometown" discounts. When it came to money, he always went for the jugular.

If Fitz means what he keeps saying about wanting to win a ring, he either needs to demand a trade (if he has given up on the Cardinals' chances) or he needs to redo his deal (the way Brady did) in order to give the Cardinals the chance to add championship quality talent to the roster.

While I agree that the Cardinals have shown the ability to put a consistent winner on the field, it doesn't change the fact that Fitzgerald's deal will become very restrictive starting next year. He has already received two top market deals prior to his current contract and if Fitz is "all about winning" as he says he is, it is something the team will need to bring up with him.

The nice thing that I believe we will see over the next two years is the exiting of players like Colledge, Bradley, Kolb, and Sendlein/Snyder. Getting rid of these deals will go along way to freeing up space as well. Especially when we will need to extend Sam Acho and Patrick Peterson in the next two years as well. I am curious to see how the new regime handles Andre Roberts when his contract expires and what his demands will be. It is funny, but with Campbell, Fitzgerald, and Washington all on long term contracts, I don't see any other vital players to re-sign other than Acho and Peterson. Dan Williams, Andre Roberts, Chris Wells, O'Brian Schofield, and Anthony Sherman are all very replaceable players if they demand too much.

it's all a matter of perspective. compared to other NFL players, he's putting team over money. in sports, that's pretty rare.

if you were Fitz, why would you possibly believe the Cardinals would do anything with whatever money you were giving back?

To further put it in perspective, the money he is leaving on the table, comparatively speaking..... is akin to the amount we find under couch cushions... and grin about.
