A top orthopedic surgeon with knowledge of Tom Brady’s injury and subsequent troubled knee surgery says the NFL superstar will never play again. “(His career) is dead,” the physician told us. “It’s over – plain and simple,”

A second orthopedic surgeon, while not predicting an end to the Patriots QB’s career, was nevertheless grim: “A lot of times … the motion doesn't come back. In Brady's case, with the infection, you wonder if the graft is strong enough and whether his knee will occasionally buckle, collapse or re-tear."

Both physicians asked their names not be used, as neither is authorized to speak on the case. But both are widely regarded orthopedic specialists who have worked on many injuries similar to Brady’s and who have been published in some of the top medical journals in this field.

“The more surgery a person has, the worse he will be,” the first surgeon told our reporter. “The same will be true for Brady. He will never be the same; he will never be able to play again. Sad but true. But in these types of operations, if it isn’t done right the first time, then it’s over.”

According to Boston.com, Patriots owner Robert Kraft did say recently that Brady has "an infectious way of impacting people, so we're happy that he's back and getting himself into good shape."

If the report is true, that is sad. Brady is a great player, not bad for a 5th round pick.

An internet report Thursday quoting unnamed sources portended an end to the career of New England Patriots QB Tom Brady, the reigning NFL MVP, because of complications linked to infections that followed his October knee reconstruction.

A source with intimate knowledge of Brady's condition told Sporting News on Thursday afternoon that "nothing could be further from the truth." The source said Brady is "right on track" to recover in time for the 2009 season, adding his rehab is going "perfectly."

Brady tore his ACL and MCL in the club's Sept. 7 opener against Kansas City and had the reconstructive surgery on his left knee Oct. 6. A post-surgery infection prompted doctors to perform three follow-up procedures on the knee to contain the infection.

Sporting News sources say the infection was successfully contained, and Brady was able to start the rehabilitation process like any other athlete with such an injury.

In October, Dr. James Gladstone, chief of medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, told Sporting News that, "If (the treatment for the infection) works like it's supposed to work, he's got every chance to do as well as anyone with his rehab."

The report of a major, career-threatening setback that surfaced Thursday morning quoted an unnamed orthopedic surgeon with knowledge of Brady's injury as saying, "(His career) is dead. It's over -- plain and simple."

Sporting News' source called that diagnosis "ridiculous."

Culpepper's playing after shredding the trifecta of ligaments.

Then again, knees are tricky. Color me not surprised with any outcome.

Look I'm not a doctor but I have stayed at a holiday inn express. Infection in a joint is very serious.
but ortho doc's are a jealous breed. These guys werent good enough to do Tom's surgery so of course they bad mouth it and make unsolicited opinions without ever seeing the guy. Talk about unethical.

Report is total B.S. Brady will play next year, although might miss significant time. With today's medical technology, "we can rebuild him."

Whether he takes the field again (and this article is a tad extreme) I hate to say this but he will never be the same. He is my favorite non Cardinal of all time but the precedent is not good.

Culpepper and even more comprable, Carson Palmer were never the same again after similar knee injuries. Brady doesn't ever need to run but not having the ability to cut and move arond in the pocket and not use your legs in your throws just kills you.

The Pats would be wise to franchise Matt Cassel.

We don't really know that much because the Pats have been so closemouthed about the injury.

We pretty much know from the way the surgery was delayed that it was an MCL and ACL tear, with the complications of infection afterward that shouldn't have a significant effect on recovery since they were resolved.

Palmer tore the MCL and ACL and had a dislocation of the kneecap which caused significant extra problems. Additionally, Palmer went to the pro bowl the next year, and wasn't exactly terrible in 2007. His decline has more to do with the Bengals falling apart as a team than the injury, IMO. Plus, he'd only had one good season *before* the injury.

Culpepper tore all three ligaments in the joint, which is a good bit worse than just two, and he was a guy who relied very heavily on his ability to move around.

Unless the injury to Brady involves complications as bad as those in the Palmer and Culpepper cases, it's not really fair to say they're that similar.

I expect Brady to be back and look very good for a few more years.

I'm pretty sure your not a medical professional or you would not made that statement. Infection "eats" away at your tissues. It is very signifigant. who knows if it was "resolved" without damage.

I hope Brady makes it back. I think he will but the infections that needed to be cleaned out really raises red flags.

No, I'm not a medical professional. However, I'm basing my statement on what medical professionals had to say about the story at the time.

Look I'm not a doctor but I have stayed at a holiday inn express.

So, let's put your non-M.D. status up against mine. Knife fight, to the death. My non-M.D. status fights dirty, though.
