We have four professional sports teams and most of didn't even know the Diamondbacks were any good until the playoffs. Whats their excuse?

Was the rodeo in town?

The Dbacks won a championship in '01, lost money and proceeded to deconstruct the team by getting rid of alot of fan favorites, including Randy and Curt. No wonder fans were pissed and didnt follow the rebuild too closely as the young Dbacks were pretty bad fundamentally for a number of years. Its hard to watch mental mistake after mental mistake after ownership dissembled a very good team. I talk to people all the time that are just getting over the breakup of the championship team. It had to be done financially, but are you kidding, very few fans would NOT walk away from that scenario. But to not sell out the year AFTER the championship, didnt see that one. SA is an unusual sporting market to say the least. A sellout in baseball is near 60,000 fans, 3x what it takes to sell out a basketball game.

that's all well and good but the D-backs didn't even sell out both of NLCS games against Atlanta when we went to the World Series in 2001.

Neither did the marlins when they won it. The Dbacks were 4 years from expansion, not much tradition in arizona for baseball. Still 60,000 seats +/- is alot more than a puny basketball venue. Some of thse seats in baseball, you have to have 20/10 vision to see anything at all.

Tickets remain: Walk-up sales Saturday resulted in a sellout for Game 1, but about 750 tickets for tonight's game still were available at the close of business Monday, including some in the lower bowl, at prices from $110 to $160.

Tickets can be purchased at all Ticketmaster locations. They also can be charged by phone by calling (210) 225-TEAM. They can be charged online at ticketmaster.com, or spurs.com.

I found tickets in the lower bowl at the start of the thread for $68 a piece.

where are you getting 60,000 seats? There's not even one stadium in MLB that holds that many people. Average is around 43,000.

It's not like us Phoenix fans are much better, we couldn't even sell out the NLCS last year.

Big difference.

20,000 seats compared to 49,000 seats.

4 time champions, currently a dynasty and defending their title, while the D'Backs had sucked the past few years prior to last seasons NLDS and CS.

Yes it was sad when arizona didn't sell out games for d' backs post season games.

But the big difference between s.a. and phx, is phx is an over-saturated sports market with the suns, dbacks, cardinals, coyotes, asu football, asu basketball... s.a. only has one team.

yes, but I think people also have to take into consideration that a) SA fans are probably incredibly spoiled at this point and don't put as much stock into this series as we do b) probably look at this series (right or wrong) as all but locked up seeing as how they've owned us forever c) waiting for more important games down the line in the playoffs to spend money on because they're all poor toothless hicks.

i'll go with c) :)

The thing about suns fans is that phx used to have as good a fans as any team in the league. That's why barkley still says the suns have the best fans in the league because he is thinking of his time here. Who else would have had a parade for a second place team? I mean that run in the early mid 90's culminating with 93 was as great a marriage between a city and sports team that i'll ever see in my life.

Everywhere you went in 93 (even the playoffs in 94/95) you would see suns signs in store windows and front lawns.

I'm not sure exactly when things changed, but sometime around the mid 90's. Lots of factors but mainly the entire sports culture has changed here and we have become a huge frontrunning city.

I'm guessing the primary factor is the transient nature of the city and how everybody is now from somewhere else.

The team with the best record in baseball got 20k at best (there were a lot of no show's) last night for a division game coming off a year they went to the NLCS. Fans in Phoenix have no leg to stand on when it comes to bandwagon antics. I recall Kidd, Marion, and Chapman having to subject themselves to mall appearances during their off days to sell playoff tickets a few years back.

Wow. This is pathetic. The Dodgers had a pre-season game at the coliseum in March and sold 115,000 tickets. A baseball game that counted for squat.

This is the best first round matchup in the history of the NBA and in a town where there's nothing else going on and they're the defending champs with four total championships and they can't get into their team enough to sell out the house?

There's no excuse for that!

Baseball is much more popular than the NBA, the ratings of the playoffs tell the story. Last year, the NBA playoffs were thumped by idol reruns, and by the baseball divisional series.

Maybe the Spurs should forfeit their two wins because ticket sales didn't satisfy Suns fan.

Not like the Suns are gonna get a win any other way.
