Baker and Simmons would be a fantastic young safety pair for the long run.
Simmons ideal spot to me would be SS. His speed and ball/coverage skills would be wasted plugging gaps as an ILB. He's like a bigger, faster, scarier A Dub.

From the SS position near the middle of the defense, you can tackle freely, blitz on demand, and can cover the TE's over the middle right in your wheelhouse.

This is the only move that makes sense!! We have a #8 pick sitting on the bench, who is athletically superior to 85% of the players in the NFL. Yea, I know he is not earning playing time at LB...because arguably our 2 most consistent players are there...Hicks and Campbell.

Simmons played Safety for one of the top teams in the country, and looked great. His most natural position that best uses his skills might very well be SS. We have a need a safety, and a player who should be an eventual pro-bowler.

If you want to bring someone in to play FS...do it...otherwise the SS discussion should be done and over with. Put Simmons there and let him shine.

Earl Thomas may be a wildcard in terms of locker room impact but at 31 years old he's still twice the player Budda "Highest paid safety in the league" Baker is. 30 interceptions in his career. 7 done in the years Budda has been in the league. I'm not sold on locker room poison either. He helped the Seahags win championships for nearly a decade before going nuts. Getting released from the Ravens might have humbled him again. If we could get him it would be a steal.

But if the Texans are snagging Earl, I'm both excited and terrified at what Simmons might look like playing safety.

Is Cam Chancellor a decent comparison?

The problem with this is both are suited to the SS position and neither is suited to play FS. That's a problem with the team right now, no true FS to put out on the field.

Safeties are interchangeable these days. The SS, FS designation is "Old school".

For those who may not know...Budda Baker is classified as a FS in Vance's system however Vance does move him around. Simmons would definitely be a SS, essentially lining up on the strong side of the formation. I believe Adrian Wilson, Kam Chancelor, and Derwin James would be strong comps for what Simmons could be as a SS.
