All signs are pointing to the Washington Commanders drafting a running back in the draft next week after meeting with a long list of names throughout the process. The latest name visiting Washington might be the most notable as a top running back in the loaded class.

Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson is in Washington on Wednesday, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, and posts on Kaleb's Instagram stories.

It's safe to say that Kaleb Johnson was Iowa's entire offense in 2024 as he finished with 1,725 yards from scrimmage, which were 40.4% of the team's total yardage, and also had 57.5% of the team's total touchdowns with 23 in just 12 games. Johnson is the definition of a true workhorse running back that can do it all for you with a ton of touches, and is as reliable as it comes. Kaleb had the 4th most touches by a running back and led with zero fumbles in 2024.

The former Hawkeye runs with a purpose, and his stats show it with 1,060 of his 1,535 rushing yards coming after contact with a defender failing to bring him down. Johnson also had the 3rd most explosive runs in college football last year, with 28 runs of 15 yards plus, and uses his speed to power transition as a true weapon. Kaleb is a bigger back at 6-foot and 225 pounds, but he runs with light feet and deceptive speed to get where he wants to go and put defenders out of position.

He also broke out as a more serious receiving threat in 2024, with 22 catches for 188 yards and two touchdowns, including a highlight reel touchdown against Nebraska that showed off his contact balance and elusiveness.

Will make his money as an elite fit in a zone running scheme: patient, decisive, plays with great vision

But also a real factor in the passing game

Kaleb Johnson has the makings of a franchise running back in the NFL, and the 21-year-old could be even better with a real passing offense and not facing a loaded box as often. Washington needs a big-time playmaker who can score touchdowns and rack up yards for the offense, and Johnson might be Adam Peters' guy. He's projected as a second-round pick and would likely have to be the pick at 61 if he falls that far.
