What a great word "smitten" is. Do you know how the word was derived?

To smite is to strike---

The name Smith is a derivation---because, for example, a blacksmith is one who strikes or pounds metal into shapes like---arrows!

Thus---to be smitten is to be struck in the heart by Cupid's arrow.

Such was the case for me when I was 8 years old---it was November 24, 1963---the day my uncle took me to my first pro football game at Yankee Stadium. The New York Giants versus the St. Louis Cardinals.

As fate would have it---when my uncle and I emerged from the tunnel---and I saw the field for the first time (which is love at first sight for many kids), the Cardinals, clad in white and red jerseys and milk white helmets and blood red cardinals on the sides, were warming up in the hazy New York sun.

Cupid---at that instant---fired an arrow deep into my heart and I was totally and helplessly in love.

My uncle, a life-long Giants fan and season ticket holder, was so gracious about it and even bought me a Cardinals pennant after the game, which was especially kind of him seeing as the Cardinals eked out a nice win that day.

In fact, my uncle then made it a yearly tradition to invite me to the Cardinal game.

For years and years, it became my annual thrill and humiliation---for beating the Giants in New York at times seemed impossible.

It got so bad that one year while waiting in line to buy half-time beers and hot dogs, a drunken Giants fan waiting beside me in the line screamed over to a friend, "Gotta LOVE the Cardinal game! They suck so BAD! Every year the game is OVER by half-time! YEAH!"

Yup. The truth.

I remember before the days of NFL Sunday Ticket, having to drive 40 minutes to the only bar around that showed out of town games just to sit amongst screaming Giants' fans while watching the Cardinals get beat by the Redskins on the smallest TV in the place---without being able to hear the audio because, thanks to the Giants' game audio being blasted on high, audio of other games were on mute.

I remember when I was first a Cardinals' fan---how I was on pins and needles all day on Halloween, not for trick or treating, but for the fact that Cardinals were playing the Bears on Monday Night Football beneath a full October moon. I remember begging my parents to let me stay up for the game, even though it was a school night---and crying when they at first said no. Fortunately, the Cardinals were playing so well that night my dad got into it and let me watch until midnight, when he scurried me off to bed right after Roger Wehrli made the game saving interception!

Yet, I remember so vividly years later how bad things got for the Cardinals---especially on Monday nights---that I once found myself in my car in the parking lot of a bar bawling my eyes out because Neil O'Donohue missed a chip shot field goal that would have won the Cardinals the game after a great comeback.

I remember thinking that the Cardinals were the epitome of Murphy's Law---whatever can go wrong, will go wrong.

Loving the Cardinals was like getting dumped over and over again. It actually became abusive.

The move to Arizona was extremely agonizing. I loved the arches of Bush Stadium and all the lore of the St. Louis baseball and football Cardinals. Nothing about the move seemed right.

Then to see the players and the 18,000 fans having to endure the sweltering and oppressive heat in Sun Devil Stadium amongst more fans from the visiting teams was beyond abusive---it seemed throughly inhumane.

But then came the efforts of Michael Bidwill, who helped spearhead the push for the new stadium---and when a long-time dream became reality, I felt smitten all over again.

Then came the Kurt Warner magic---and the unthinkable: the Cardinals winning the NFC Championship!---at HOME in the new stadium---and then Larry Fitzgerald's mad dash in the Super Bowl and being ever so close---

Then the heartache of losing Warner and reverting back to horrendous quarterback play and porous defense---

But then---Mr. Michael Bidwill put his foot down and said enough---he did what so many of us fans had been begging for all these years---he put the football decisions in the most capable hands he could find in Steve Keim and Bruce Arians.

Just listening to their press conferences when Keim and Arians were hired gave me goosebumps. I thought it was OK to love again because the words and the music seemed to finally match. It just felt right.

Then to realize that the Cardinals under Bidwill, Keim and Arians are a first-class organization that is focused on one main goal---the very goal that has never seemed possible---to see the players so committed to the culture and the goal---to see free agents want to be Cardinals and pick the Cardinals over teams like the Packers, Saints and Cowboys---I mean I still have to pinch myself---I mean this is real, people!

And yesterday I felt the arrow in my heart plunge all the way through when Bruce Arians introduced Jen Welter as an interim coach. In a way it feels like I am watching the beautiful Cardinal I fell in love with so long ago blossom before my eyes. She's adorable---she's passionate---she's wickid smaht (Boston term!)---she's wonderfully articulate---she's a pioneer---she's a trailblazer---she's the ultimate underdog, yet the ultimate scrapper, fighter and warrior.

The image of Jen Welter hoisting the Cardinals' helmet over her head---after hearing all the incredibly passionate and heartfelt things she said about the Cardinals---was as if this adorable Cardinal I have been in love with all these years, through thick and thin, has finally smiled at me said, "I love you---just as much as you love me. We are going to make this work---after all."

Man Walter you hit the nail on the head with this one. So much of what you wrote is exactly what I saw and felt as well all these years. I really enjoyed reading this!

Perfectly stated Mitch... I just don't think, ever we hardcore Cards fans, can fully know in the moment, how great and how special the Mike Bidwill, Steve Keim and Bruce Arians combination truly is. I have no doubt that this ********* will easily go down as the greatest leadership team in the history of this franchise (I know - not saying much), BUT, they will also end up ranked among the most respected and accomplished leadership teams in the history of the NFL... They are THAT good individually - and even THAT much better as a team!

Mitch, your first game was the weekend of JFK's assassination. MY memory of the game, though I wasn't there, was that the Cardinals won a low scoring game with Larry Wilson making an interception, or maybe two, despite playing with a cast on one or both hands. Am I off base?

Mitch, your first game was the weekend of JFK's assassination. MY memory of the game, though I wasn't there, was that the Cardinals won a low scoring game with Larry Wilson making an interception, or maybe two, despite playing with a cast on one or both hands. Am I off base?

It was a 17-17 game that the Cardinals won in the 4th quarter when Charley Johnson hit Bobby Joe Conrad for a 3 yard TD pass to make it 24-17.

Interesting that you mention FS Larry Wilson---wearing #8 and playing defense he was immediately sticking out to me in warmups because he was all over the field making plays on the ball. Yes, in the game he had 2 interceptions. I don't think he had any casts on that day and i do remember when he did, I think it was against the Eagles if I am not mistaken. But---Wilson, Garth, more than any other player, caught my attention and fan interest.

The guy of offense in warmup who stood out was WR Sonny Randle, #88. He was so smooth and precise in his routes---had velcro hands and a nice easy way about him. He caught a TD in the 3rd quarter from Charley Johnson to tie the game at 10-10.

Were you there that day?

You know who was there that day---who said like I did that it was the day he became a life-long Cardinals' fan?

Joe Maddon, manager of the Chicago Cubs.

Isn't that amazing? When i heard him say this during an interview and allude to the exact game as I always have, I was in awe!

Yesterday's presser showed how and why this organization is the class of the NFL. Not because they hired a woman, but the entire story behind the process. Hearing Dr. Welter talk about BA floored me. I already knew his character, but to see it in action and see the reasons why the hire was made just absolutely solidifies how ridiculously lucky we are to have him. We know that Mike B, Keim and BA are good at what they do from a performance standpoint, but I think it is clear now that from a character standpoint, there is not a better triumvirate in the NFL.

I don't know what the end results will be on paper, but with everything that has transpired, I truly believe we are in for an incredibly special year. You can feel the energy and the inertia already.

Goosebumps were exactly what I felt when BA introduced Jen Welter at the press conference and all of the passionate and smart things she said. She even took on the media and said that too often the media exploits girls and women by objectifying them. She was dynamic! And I loved that she wasn't afraid to manifest her femininity. She clearly is not afraid to be herself.

I look for the day when the capability of the coach (or player) is all that matters not their gender, lifestyle or anything else.

If a person can coach 'em up, then they should be doing just that.

One day it won't be "gay", "female" or any other quality, it will just be "the Cardinals hired <coach's name here>", period.

It may not be that way in my lifetime but I pray it is.

Mitch,

I enjoyed your post and the history you actually lived to become a Cards fan. I, too, was won over long ago for some mystical, magical reason.

I hope she does well and from her resume' I would expect she would. As you more eloquently stated than I will is that this is no "gimmick" or "token" hire. BA obviously has great confidence and faith in her ability to coach.

I bought a Cardinals doormat yesterday. The woman (60-ish) who was at the register said, "Looks like you're a Cardinals fan. Me too! I like the Bidwills. They hire good people we can be proud of."

I walked out with a smile on my face... and it wasn't just because of my awesome new doormat.

I'm just not sure I could spend money on something that reminded me of The "Cardinals doormat days". :(

Another Mitch masterpiece, and yes the emotions you experienced and shared are the same I have had as well.

Before Michael starting running things I would hope and pray we would be good, even convinced myself of it all too often. Now I know we will be good because of the leaders Michael has hired.

Great post, Mitch.
Sums up a lot of my experience as an out of town Card fan. One day I'll never forget, is trying to get the Cards-Giants game on my car radio and driving all over the place trying to get decent reception from the Giant's station's broadcast. Unfortunately, it was the infamous 'open the tunnel for Brad Deluiso's(?) fg attempt'.

Oh Mitch----------how wonderfully articulate you are when it comes to expressing your passion for all things Cardinal. You may not know it my friend, but you have become as much a treasure to this board, as have the moving force of the Cardinals, Michael Bidwill, Steve Keim and Bruce Arians. You possess a unique ability to capture moments in time, and make them become so real as to actually create goose bumps on the skins of Cardinals fans of all ages. You are so adept at being able to transport each of us readers back to that moment about which you speak. Thank you for your passion and your love for football in general, and our beloved Cardinals in particular. You help us all to re-create those special moments in time that have touched us all so deeply.

I recall the Sundays of futility and of unbearable heat in the south end zone of SDS, as our under funded, under talented, and under coached Cardinals toiled in the sweltering inferno only to come up short time after time after time.

I remember vividly the ground swell of hope when the Rio Salado Crossing project was announced, and watching a young Michael Bidwill take the reigns of that project only to be rejected by the backwards thinking of Mesa's local government at that time. The trouncing in the polls at election time was inevitable from the start, but there was Michael, out in the heat with the rest of us trying to persuade the voters of the importance getting this Stadium built and having it here close to SDS.

I recall the delirium of riding Kurt Warner's coat tails to the Super Bowl itself, only to fall short again. This time we did have that stadium, and Michael did have his vision of what could be. I watched the futility with which he tried to elevate Steve Keim to a position of
effectiveness in the hierarchy of the Cardinals front office, only to have him be trumped time after time by the likes of Ken Whisenhunt and Rod Graves.

Then came that glorious moment year before last, when Michael, now the final word in football operations, sat down with his newly chosen GM, Steve Keim, and together they selected Bruce Arians to replace Whisenhunt as head coach, over the objections and volatile voices of fans who championed staying with the comfortable choice of elevating our DC to the head coaching position.

For me, that was the finite moment in time that somehow made so much sense. Suddenly, all the old was gone, and with it the futile and convoluted ways of doing things. Michael was fully in charge, and his approach was fresh, and clean, and clearly thought out. He had solidified his position by making the two most important hires in the history of this fabled old franchise, and despite all the nay sayers, and hangers on, he and BASK began to transform this inept organization into what we see today.

I recall the vocal taunts and tirades on the board that nothing but verbage had been accomplished. Yet I somehow felt secure, and comfortable that we had just witnessed the complete transformation of this organization into something worthwhile and positive, and that the culture had indeed changed, (and for the better by far).

I remember trying to champion this new management group, and getting more than a snootful of grief in post after post, as I tried to explain how I was so certain that what was occurring was good, and that it just felt so very right. I saw this management team work with eager and singular purpose and direction at righting what had been so very wrong for so very, very long.

I find it amazing that these three people have accomplished in only their third pre-season, what no other front office and coaching groups have been able to do in the entirety of this franchise. They have been recognized by the league as model owner, and executive of the year, and coach of the year in that short time. They have amassed a double digit winning record in each of their first two seasons together, and have now developed a roster of unique character, and deep talent, and are poised to enter one of the most promising and fascinating training camps in franchise history. I can't hardly wait to see the position battles develop as this coaching staff begins to hone the roster to a razor edge.

Through all this, Mitch, you have been stalwart, and out front with your beautiful prose and your words of hope, and your impressive knowledge of football and your love of the Cardinals. Thank you for being there for us all this time. Thank you for giving us goose bumps!
