Could the DBacks please trade Shawn Green already? The anticipation is killing me for Carlos Quentin to become an everyday starter. And with Gonzo playing well this line-up could be deadly for the stretch.

Not only that, but I think that Stephen Drew should be batting 2nd. Anyone agree?

With a contract like his, it's not as simple as waving the "Boom, your traded" wand and making him disappear.

I dont think drew is ready to bat #2. I'd leave that spot to Tracy. Perhaps next year have Drew at 2, and Tracy at 5 (keeping more speed at the top). So I'd switch Drew and Tracy in your lineup, and Id move Hudson to the 7 hole, since for no reason he rules in that spot.

I forgot about wavers. He may not be traded until September.

If you can't trade Green, trade Byrnes and move Green to CF. He did OK there last year. He is fading, but normally he has a little surge in August-Sept if he's healthy.

Green, Gonzo, and Conor have the best OBPs. If we assume that 'the lineup makes the man' then put Tracy 1st or 2nd and see if he starts walking more and whiffing less. I'd like to see them Conor hit first, too -- get him back to being his normal style, much more patient at the plate. If he's being too aggressive, it might just be the expectations and instruction. Putting him in the 3rd or 4th was a big managerial error, every bit as bad as putting Tracy there. Young guys are going to be more susceptible to the 'expectations' of the line-up slot, and try too hard. Good work, Bomel. For that reason, I'd keep Drew down the line-up until he clearly has his feet under him. He doesn't need to get more aggressive either.

^I agree w/ what you said about Tracy and Cojack hitting in the 4 slot. I don't want to get rid of Byrnes, he brings so much energy, and is a good fielder. Plus he's about the only speed we've got. Tracy or Cojack hitting leadoff certainly wouldnt be very imposing on the base paths.

I agree Hoover. I don't want to get rid of Byrnes. He should be a good part of the team for a while. I bet the D-Backs will find a way to trade Green or Gonzo by next season so they can bring up Young.

What about Counsell? Is he sticking around?

They will not pick up Gonzo's option for next year. However, that only creates a roster spot for Q. If they get rid of Green, then they can place Young in CF and Byrnes in LF.

He is as good as gone.

The Yankees just got Bobby Abreu. Things could pick up now with someone St. Louis. If they don't, I think he's here for the rest of the season.

boondock, how are they getting rid of him? Is his contract finishing or is he escpected to retire?

And yeah that's what I expect them to do. That's going to be a nice outfield next year, defensively and probably offensively too. :)

Gonzo has a club option that the Dbacks can either pick up or allow him to become a free agent. He has said that the only way he would wave his no-trade clause was if the team he would be traded to would pick up his option. That little peice of information has all but destroyed any chance that Gonzo is going to be traded.

With Counsell, I believe that his contract is up after this year.

Counsell, Gonzo (option), Batista, and Byrnes all have contracts that end this year

I thought for sure Byrnes had one more year left. Gambo and Ash even said it last week that he had one more year left.

Which is why I would consider trading Byrnes. They won't offer him a plump multi-year deal, he'll get offers elsewhere -- I like him a lot, too -- but rather see if we could get something for him than just have him walk.

That was my first thought when the Yanks trade was announced. So much for getting them to take Green.

I think we're going to be stuck with what we have, which means a lot of sitting for our young guys. :(

This is from ESPN.com today on potential waiver period trades:

Shawn Green, Arizona

Luis Gonzalez, the resident fan and clubhouse favorite in Phoenix, is staying put. He has a complete no-trade clause, the Diamondbacks are in the thick of the National League West race, and general manager Josh Byrnes knows he would be playing with public relations dynamite by shopping Gonzo.

Green is a long shot as well, but more because of his declining skills and his contract. He has 10 homers in 364 at-bats, and the old bat speed and pep are too often absent from his game. "He's what you'd call a low-energy player," said an American League executive.

Green is also signed for $9.5 million next year, a hefty amount given the Diamondbacks' youth movement and the surplus of outfield talent in the system. Arizona could easily go with an outfield of Carlos Quentin in right field, an Eric Byrnes-Jeff DaVanon platoon in center or left, and Chris Young or Scott Hairston at the other spot next season.

Green has a no-trade clause that allows Arizona to deal him to only three clubs -- the Padres, Giants and Angels -- without his consent. There are some procedural hoops to jump through, but he might be flexible if it's clear the Diamondbacks have no place for him. Bobby Abreu's no-trade clause covered 29 teams, and the Phillies still found a way to send him to the Yankees.

St. Louis was mentioned in Green speculation before the deadline, but the Cardinals lacked the interest and/or resources to make it happen. At least general manager Walt Jocketty knows what it takes to acquire a high-priced outfielder in August: Two years ago, he helped St. Louis' postseason push by acquiring Larry Walker in a trade with Colorado.
