First, I want to see what we have in John Navarre and hopefully we will see him play in the weeks ahead. But, if Navarre doesn't make an impact...and SD is now saying they want to keep Brees...how about trading our #1 draft pick in 2005 to San Diego for QB Philip Rivers?

"California dreaming..on such a winter's day" (Mamas & the Papas)

But, hey, the Chargers might trade Rivers if they re-sign Brees to a multi-year deal, just for cap reasons alone.

IMO, Rivers is a special talent...extremely accurate...highly competitive...brings enthusiasm (remember that). Speaking of enthusiasm...Brooks Bollinger, the Jets' 3rd string QB, showed more passion ans enthusiasm the short time he was in there than any Cardinal QB this year. By far...

Which is why IMO even though Marty is saying they want to keep Brees, he is still the most likely to go. They would be trading the contract of the #4 pick in the draft (for a QB no less) after 1 year of a 6 year deal.

If they did that trade, they'll have trouble re-signing Brees especially with the money that he is going to want

They can't afford to keep Brees,Rivers and LT plus they have to give a good deal to Gates too. Someone has to go and that will be Brees.

No,no,no,and hell no. Rivers is the most overrated draft pick in memory. Those little weak, side armed throws aren't going to work in the NFL. To me, he's no better a pro prospect than Craig Krenzel.

Great topic. This is gonna be a great offseason topic as well.

Brees is playing exceptionally well. Rivers is a tremendous prospect. Either one of them would be great for our Cardinals. Don't be suprised if you see us move Bryant Johnson in the offseason. BJ and a 3rd would be a good deal for either of those two QBs, whichever SD wants to give up.

For those of you who want Patrick Ramsey, watch highlights of his game today. He's a pick machine.

I'll take Brees. I think this is a good trade for both teams.

Walter,

I was thinking the same thing this AM, the Chargers would look like complete idiots if they let Breeze go now. They are going to have to keep him and trade Rivers. The Chargers can't keep both QB's. The Cards have to take a chance on a franchise QB and build around him. If Rivers is available the Cards have to go after him hard.

The Chargers took the entire cap hit from the David Boston failure this year. They'll clear about $13M from this year to next year. Plenty of room to sign Brees and Gates. The problem comes when the other quality players need to be resigned. The Chargers, like us, have a young core of players that are on their last years of their rookie deal (practically their entire secondary, Funoti, Ben Leber plus They might have to give Foley a new deal). When that happens, they need to figure out what to do with the Brees - Rivers situation.

It's very doubtful the Chargers re-sign Brees (he more than likely to be franchised and then dealt to the Cowboys for one of their two number 1 choices), but if they keep and sign Brees then Arizona should pursue Rivers using their number 1 this year and a player as trade bait (likely Bryant Johnson or Ray Thompson).

Hey, Walt! I understand that Preston Parsons still doesn't have a job. Maybe he'd have the Cards back!

I want to see the Cards make a trade for Blake and Bennett, both are Green guys and both guys value are very Low.

Green cut Blake, or do you mean another Blake?

The Chargers can't really trade P.Rivers. His entire remaining bonus will go into 2005 if they trade him. That's what? 5/6th of his giant signing bonus. That's just too huge a hit to take.

(Rivers $14.5M / 6 years, means trading him will cause a $12M cap hit)

So, for the most part Rivers stays in SD next year.

Now, San Degio can resign Brees and keep Rivers on the bench. I don't see why Brees would do this as many teams without a good backup waiting will offer him plenty.

Or San Degio can Franchise tag Brees and try to trade him for something. That's the most likely situation, but does have some problems as Brees would want a top 5 salary since he was F-Tagged.

I'm not sure exactly how a Transition Tag on Brees would gain SD anything.
A T-Tag would allow SD to match any offer. If they wanted to keep Brees, this is how they could probably do it. Let someone else figure out the contract based on the top 10 salary instead of a top 5 and then match. Maybe they can tell the other team that if they trade a 2nd round pick, then they won't match. Who knows.

I see Rivers leaving in a trade also. Breese is playing lights out and has his team in contention. They just do not let this guy go and go with a rookie. I think Rivers is a definite possibility for the Cards.

Hey McCown was/is a Green guy. Being a Green guy is no promise of success. I got a feeling the GM will have some input on the QB this time around. Read somewhere the GM wanted a QB last year at #1 but let Green have his way.

What does Urban know? I doubt Graves or anyone else in the know let him in on who wanted what in last year's draft. Maybe he heard it from Jurecki.
