Trading picks for players

One thing I haven't really considered yet re: this offseason is the possibility of trading for a veteran as opposed to signing one. Since we're under the cap, we could make a trade for a player w/ a salary less than the amount we're under for any player or pick we have. For example, if the Wizards want to shed salary, we could offer Jacobsen and a pick for Larry Hughes (about $6 million, I think) instead of dumping salary to go after Kobe. And even though I'm a Hughes fan I'm not saying he'd be a good fit (although a JJ/Hughes backcourt might work even though neither is a traditional pg)--just using that as an example.
I'd imagine there are other vets we could go after. Any ideas?
And sorry if this is rehashing a thread that's already been exhausted, but work is slow as hell today.

Shawn Marion for Paul Pierce, one way or another, is still a favorite scenario of mine.

Actually there have been numerous discussions about trades such as for Tracy McGrady, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen. So far no one has come up with a proposal that looks like the other team would buy it without hurting the Suns.

If we got lucky and won the lottery, I wonder whether either B. Colangelo or Ainge would agree to a Matrix/Okafor for Pierce deal. I bet Colangelo would and Ainge wouldn't.

Why would we commit capspace to Larry Hughes when we have a chance to sign Kobe this offseason and if we can't sign TMac next offseason?

Much less trade other assets for him as well?

Ray Allen isn't what the Suns need. He is getting old and injury prone.

Paul Pierce is a nice idea but I wouldn't throw in our lottery pick. Pierce is older than Marion and has gotten worse every singe season of his last 3.

I wouldn't give up that much for Pierce. He needs to control the ball to much and wouldn't realy fit into what the Suns are trying to do.

I think it would be the other way around and I think we wouldn't draft Okafor #1.

No way would I trade Marion and the #1 for Pierce. For TMac probably but not for Pierce.

And I was thinking more along the lines of not trading any of our core players (and thus not getting a great player), but using up our cap space by trading for a better player than we could get on the open market, trying to find a team desperate to shed salary and getting a good solid vet for merely a pick.

Geoge O'Brien might learn more from the reporters at the games but my gut tells me, after all these moves to cut salary and shed draft picks, that Colangelo's plan is now to sit tight until he sells the team.

I don't buy into the theory that we might bid on Kobe. Unfortunately, we may have to wait for a new owner before the team does anything else.

I responded to you saying it had not been discussed. I agree, I think there may be some surprising deals available through trades. Unfortunately, unless there is something written about a player being shopped (usually guys you wouldn't want anyway), it is hard to know who might be available.

Everybody looks for a team with a young player who is stuck behind an extablished star. But generally, the best bet is to look at guys who are on the last year of their contract on teams with a bloated salary structure. Another is to look at teams where a young player has played well when the veteran was injured and the veteran is too expensive to play backup. They will often give up the veteran even if the young player is not entirely ready to take over.

I would think that having Kobe and a winning team would be even more valuable to an investor, Skorp. And with Jeryy setting a time line of about 7 years it sounds as though he want to try and make one more run at the trophy before giving it up.

I agree. On top of that Kobe Bryant would be easy to trade if the new owners had some problem with him. There would be a whole group of teams lined up ready to offer almost anything to get their hands on him.

The one thing I can say about Bryant's defense team is that their PR work has been outstanding. Early on I expected that Kobe might suffer from winning his case as "not proved" rather than "innocent", thus tainting his value. Instead, Kobe's lawyers have created the image of an emotionally disturbed woman whose testimony cannot be takent seriously.

The irony is that the prosectors are playing into this PR defense by trying to keep her psychological history out of the trial. It actually serves Kobe's team that it not be released because that way it can be blown up into a bigger deal.

In any case, I am less concerned that the Colangelos will avoid Kobe simply because of the trial unless there is new evidence.

yea the only problem with your post is that this isnt going to be tried by the public. it is going to be tried by a group of 12 men and women who can only base their verdict on where there is reason to believe that she told him no. it wont matter if she had sleep with 20 men an hour before the act. so if the defense shows the bruse around her neck match kobes hand size. if they can show that their was anyway that she didnt want have sex with him then the case is over and kobe will be joining martha in prison (and maybe soon to be followed by micheal jackson).

If you are right, then Kobe will go to prison. However, the more likely result has always been that he would be acquitted but not proven innocent (such as what happened to OJ). This is why the PR war is so important.

Kobe's biggest problem is that he lied to the police during the early part of the investigation. This is either evidence of his rape or an attempt to protect his image.

I have no idea whether there is evidence not yet presented.
