The Suns would've won the title this year sans suspensions
How can you say that? We will never know. We have lose 3 game out of 5 with Amare playing. We could have won the series but it would not have been easy.
All the champions have to go through excuse. This season the Suns have much more talented players than the Spurs but we didn't win it all.

So, the questions about our Run&Gun style are legitimate.

I believe we should keep playing like that. Because we have the best run&gun PG and the players to surround him , because we are close to go through excuse and become champions, because we don't have the time to rebuild a half court offense able to match the Spurs before Nash MVPs days are over. But I also believe half court teams are much more efficient in PO. History proves it. It doesn't mean we can't be champions. It just means it is much more difficult and it takes much more talent.

I firmly believe that uptempo basketball is a winning strategy but I have very grave doubts about D'Antoni's version. For instance I think the higher the tempo the deeper bench you need to have and to use. Sure, the Suns do manage to run a few opposing players in the ground but as often as not they were the ones on tired legs at the end.

Unfortunately for the Suns, Mike D'Antoni came up with his version of the offense playing and coaching in leagues with 40 minute games and less than half as many of them - and it runs into just the problems you'd expect from that. It may well be the he has forgotten more basketball than I know but the problem is that he hasn't forgotten enough of what he learned in Euroleagues.

To top it all off, he has brought only one guy to the team that is a real fit with a running team - Nash. Steve is perfect but all the other fast players he inherited. I guess Bell is okay but its more his ability to hit treys that makes him a plus for this team. But there's absolutely no reason not to have speed all the way to end of the bench. What the heck is he thinking having five guys taking up space on the bench that can't keep up? Thats no way to construct an uptempo team. Sheesh, if we'd just used our draft choices the last three years we'd have no problem having guys with foot speed.

So much contradictions and dilemmata are associated with DA's philosophy and the roster that we got killed by the implied frictions ourselves.

Can't they figure out why they couldn't win against Spurs? The Spurs play even better fastbreak than the Suns in the two series of last three years! What an irony!

As it turned out, the very strength of having Marion on this team turned the very reason we couldn't get much useful out of the "system", as he got shut down by Parker to free Bowen on Nash, while reserving Parker's energy for better fastbreaks on their side among other devastating effects.

And Bell not performing as well as he could is imo a result of him constantly playing over 40 min a game. No wonder he got the freak injury last year and got outplayed by Manu against the end of the Spurs series. He'd be best effective with about 30-33 min a game!

We will never know, thats true, but I can only speak to what is probable. The Suns wouldve had a home game w/ a full roster and a charged arena, enraged at Horry and his thug tactics. I think they would've won that game. Then they would've only had to get a split, either one in SA or one back at home.

The Jazz gave the Suns troubles during the regular season, but I think the Suns would've beaten them, they are better. And of course the Suns would've beaten the Cavs, probably in 4 or 5.

Everyone agreed the winner of SA-PHX would win the title, and I believe Phoenix would've beaten sans the suspensions. Either way, its neither here or nor there, anyone who thinks that the Suns aren't insanely close is delusional.

cly2tw,
So much contradictions and dilemmata

'dilemmata' does not appear to be an English word, but it ought to be! An online search finds plenty of occurrences of the word, many of them in German text, though most in English.

D'Antoni has FORGOTTEN more basketball than anyone on this board has every known, he's offense is fine, its the best in the game.

Too bad defense wins championships. Someone should tell Mike.

Sorry, your basketball analysis stinks. In what way has D'Antonis offense shown it cant win a title?

Last year an insane suspension policy showed the Suns can't win the title

Two years ago the lack of an interior presence (Amares injury) showed the Suns couldn't win the title

Three years ago no bench and a facial injury to Joe Johnson showed they couldn't win the title.

D'Antoni has FORGOTTEN more basketball than anyone on this board has every known, he's offense is fine, its the best in the game.

Well said. :notworthy

No, scoring more than the other team is what wins championships.

-- 9 teams held their opponents to a lower shooting percentage than the Spurs.

-- 9 teams had a better rebounding differential than the Spurs.

-- 9 teams had more blocks than the Spurs

-- 15 teams had more steals than the Spurs

But only one team shot better as a percentage and for three, the Phoenix Suns. (Of course 16 teams shot better from the line).

Teams need good defense, but it is simply not enough. Houston held opponents to 42.9% shooting and were a classic one and out in the playffs. The same was true for Chicago, Orlando, Miami, Dallas and New Jersey.

In terms of defensive shooting percentage, San Antonio was the only team in the top five to get out of the first round and only two others (from the East) in the top ten.

In the NBA, a great defense with a mid pack offense does not beat a team with a great offense and mid pack defense. The Spurs could not have won with a crappy offense like the Cavs.

That's a questionable assumption.

Not to mention that the majority of the last 10 Championships had great defensive teams emerge victorious. I enjoyed your stats, but it's hard to argue with recent history.

Irregardless, the Suns have a much better chance next year if D'Antoni tweaks up on the D. If he doesn't, some defensively oriented team will have a great tough series, but win in the end. Great offense does you no good if your shots keep getting blocked, you can't drive the lane, and you're not allowed to play within your comfort zone.

Dude got trashed and what do you know? A year later and the organization wanted to be more half court so they traded for O'neal and Nash is no longer the best PG in the league as that title goes to Chris Paul.

Now before everyone goes crazy and throws out insults you have to understand why I started this thread.

I don't throw insults at you (don't think I ever do) and don't call you crazy. However...

I like to tell you that I'd rater miss the playoffs than trading somebody who meant that much for this franchise.

I don't want to look at players as mercenaries or numbers ($ or stats- wise).
I'd feel ashamed as a Suns fan to see us trading Nash more than I'd be ashamed of losing to the Hawks by 50 points.

The same for Grant Hill. A guy that declined a higher salary to play for Phoenix. Had we traded him during the season, I'd have felt horrible.

There have to be some ethnics in this league though you rarely find them.

Now before everyone goes crazy and throws out insults you have to understand why I started this thread.

1. To show people that while trading Nash would be stupid, trading Amare would be even worse.

2. To rant about how we need to switch to more of a half court offense.

I know it's unrealistic because of how much the Suns organization and fans like the guy but would anyone rather trade Steve Nash than Amare Stoudemire if you had to trade one of them?

Think about it. Steve Nash is getting older and while I still expect him to be a top 20 player I doubt he will hold the title as the best point guard at the end of the next year. I would also rather have the dominating big man who has shown improvement in every season so far. This guy has been working out since Day 1 of the off-season and I am convinced he will take back the title as the best center in the league next year.

Plus isn't a big man more important than a point guard? While Nash makes the Suns go that is because the system is based entirely around him. You switch to a half-court offense and Nash is not a MVP candidate the last three years and don't try to convince me that the SUns are better off with there offense being run & gun. It has been proven that to win a championship you need to be a primely half court offense team.

The whole teams offensive philosophy is wrong. Of course it's exciting and makes the Suns fun to watch but a championship is more important. To this date that offensive system has not shown that it could win someone a championship. You switch to a primerly half court offense with the option to run & gun where Amare is the focal point but Nash can still do his thing w/o being relied on to make as many plays and I believe the Suns could have already won a championship.
trade him to dallas for kidd.....please. kidd is a better defender........but the suns have no offense with out the pick and roll master. that pick and roll doesn't work if you don't have a shooter making the pass. and for the same token a person who can finish like stat. I can't understand why people don't see why these two make each other soooooooo much better. but nash is the playmaker.

If you can't find the ethnics in the NBA, I don't know what to tell you.

Hehe - you are paying attention to detail, Sir.

Believe it or not, I even realised my mistake after hitting the "submit reply" button.
But who would catch this, unless Eric is reading it? ;)

If you think trading Steve Nash is the answer to the Suns winning a title, you are obviously blitzed in the head.
