I was rather impressed with the overall play of the deep bench. The Blazers are an up and coming team with size and athleticism. With 41 wins in the West, they might have been a playoff contender in other years. In the East, the Blazers would have been sixth seed. Yet the Suns bench actually played them even for the entire second half.
It was a remarkable performance. Giricek, Tucker, Strawberry and Marks played the entire second half without a break. Diaw played for 8 minutes and Pike played the rest. Yet their defense was good enough that the Blazers ended the game with a 40% shooting percentage.
Overall for the game the Suns outrebounded the Blazers 57-36 even with Aldridge, Frye, and Outlaw on the floor. In the second half the Suns rebounded very well despite a tiny lineup: Marks 13 rebounds, Strawberry had 7, Tucker had 6, and Giricek had 9 (played 42 minutes for the game).
Giricek had a great game, scoring 17 points and 4 assists to go with his 9 rebounds; but the real star was Marks. He had 16 points on 6 of 8 shooting (including 1 of 1 for three), 13 rebounds, a blocked shot, and one highlight play where he passed after falling down on a sequence that led to a score. On another play he forced a steal and then finished when DJ got him the ball for a dunk. This was the best game of Marks' NBA career in a game against the highly touted Aldridge.
Strawberry and Tucker both played good defense and rebounded very well with Strawberry getting 7 rebounds and Tucker 5. DJ had 7 assists and blocked a shot; but hit only 1 of 8 shots. Tucker's outside shooting was only marginally better at 3 of 10; but his real problem was trying to make layups against Aldridge and Frye. (Barbosa also had problem against their front line, going only 1 of 6.) Clearly the rookies need to become better shooters if they hope to play more next season, but their athleticism is pretty impressive.
Giricek is already a rotation player to play the entire second half, but it was Marks who turned the most heads. This was only the third game this season where Marks has played more than 10 minutes and only the second game in 2008 he's played more than 6. Last night at 24 minutes was over 18% of all the minutes he played this eason, but he looked just great.
Considering the nature of the playoffs, it seems unlikely Marks any more this season. But he may have earned himself another contract.
