First and foremost I ran into Skkorp and chatted with him and his wife Melony. Very nice people and it was a pleasure.
First and foremost the Dennis Greens camp is definately different than what Im used to. Lots and lots of hitting. They dont take much time off and it seems to be run more crisply than in years past. Contrary to what skkorp had reported they did have a lengthy team warm up sesssion ran much like I remember it in High School. They did it together as a team and in sync.
The first thing that stuck out at Camp today was Anquan Boldin. he was not dressed for practice and must have some sort of injury. Nobody knows whats going on or if its anything serious. But from his demeanor I dont think it is.
Gilmore was dressed and back in action today. He was sloppy dropping at least two balls that I saw. But he was running with the first team with Boldin and Johnson out.
The 1st team WRs today were Fitz, Williams, and Gilmore. 2nd team was Poole, Kasper, Mcaddley.
Fitzgeralds pictures do him no justice. The guy is a specimen. He is big and strong. He actually made Boldin look small when they stood next to each other. We all know how big and stong Boldin is. He doesnt seem to be in sync with McCown as of yet though. But they are still doing a lot of short routes.
During all the scrimmage and RB drills it appears to me that Scobey is behind Emmitt on the RB depth chart. He seemd to get the most reps. He looked very good breaking two long runs and breaking tackles.
Anderson(with his new BIG afro) also looked good he had a couple good runs and appears to have no ill affects from his auto accident.
Croom got very few reps and did nothing special.
Emmitt had two nice runs as well. However he did upset me when I noticed that he quit doing drills with the other RBs about ten minutes earlier then them. He left and started walking back towards the team while all other RBs were still down working hard on the sled. Just makes me wonder why?
I noticed the WRs doing some cool new drill that weren't done in years past. They would do the footwork drills through the ropes which was only done by the RBs in years past.
They were also doing a great drill where the coach would hold them at the line trying to teach them to break away from a CB jamming them at the line.
The other drill I noticed was one where they would jump in a pile of guys holding hitting pads and try to catch the ball while being hit by the other players with the pads. Seemed to simulate catching in a crowd and getting them to concentrate on catching the bal while being hit.
The QBs also did drill where they worked on their footwork. Almost like a shuttle drill but they couldnt look down and had to keep there eyes on the coach at all times.( I would fall on my face) McCown looked especially crisp with his footwork.
McCown overall was throwing pinpoint passes and looked really good. There is a definate difference between him and King. I am also completely unimpressed with Navarre. He is just to slow and choppy.
I noticed today that LJ was playing with the first team OL at LT for about 3 plays. The rest of the time it was still Big. Big was very impressive to me today. When I watched him closely he did not get beat by Berry at anytime that I saw this AM.
They did the drill where one D-lineman goes after the QB and there are 3 OL trying to stop him. From what I saw I wasnt that impressed with KVB like Skkorp has been both in the drill and in the scrimmages KVB was being handled easily by Raleigh Roundtree.
Russell Davis was completely manhandling Stepanovich in the above drill. It was really almost easy for Davis it seemed. I certainly hope that Step gets better.
Others that seemed to do very well in the drill were Kenny King, Darnell Dockett, and Calvin Pace.
This defense is fast that is no lie. On more than one occasion I heard the coaches specifically point out Levar Woods for good plays today as well. I wouldnt be surprised if he could start on another team.
During Redzone drills Coby Rhinehart had a beautiful tipped Int from a King pass. Macklins had gorgeous diving deflection of a McCown to Gilmore pass. He should have picked it but just couldnt hold on. It was till a thing of beauty.
Adrian Wilson also had a very nice sideline Int of a McCown pass when they were scrimmaging in the middle of the field.
Overall Skkorp is right there is a whole lot more teaching going on now as opposed to past years. The only coach from the past who taught and got into the players faces like this whole staff does was Jerry Sullivan.
So far I like what I see, but we will know much more as soon as the WR corps is completely healthy and McCown gets his timing down with Fitz!
Hope the info is helpful. I will be here for 6 more practices!
