I think I wasn't clear in my earlier my post, I'm not complaining about this particular trade, just the potential idea of cashing in too many chips to try to win now. The D'backs need a lot of help a lot of positions and have some quality guys in the minors, I'd rather take a patient approach if possible.

Who knows if Goldschmidt is going to have a great year. Is Ryan Roberts a full time 3rd baseman? Can Aaron Hill keep it up at 2nd? How long can Chris Young fail to bait his weight and still be useful? Who leads off for this team? There's a lot of questions and it just seems the team is ripe for a small step back this year.

I am good with this. I think Cahill's contract runs through 2015 with team options in 2016 and 2017. So we give up a prospect with potential for a relatively established guy with a great contract.

All excellent points.

In his young MLB career, Cahill has proven himself to be an extremely good pitcher who fits nicely into the rotation and continues the youth movement.

And who knows if Parker will be any good? You can make this point against trading, always. Since when has obtaining a 23 year old been seen as selling out for the now? Ridiculous!

I like the move as Cahill is a high-quality starter, produces tons of innings which means he's going deep into games on a consistent basis. And he's signed for another 4 years. He's essentially a clone of Kennedy, which doesn't suck. I think the Breslow addition is also a v ery nice pick-up to our pen. With the prospects of Saunders leaving, we won't have one lefty starter on the team... which means we will need a bunch of quality left handers in the pen. Breslow fits that bill!

Additionally, I hope we resign Joe Saunders for another year so we have a set rotation of Kennedy, Hudson, Cahill, Saunders, Collmenter.

If not Saunders, does anyone have any idea how much Roy Oswalt would cost for a 1-2 year contract?

As much as I like Bauer, I don't like the idea of giving him a rotation spot just because we don't have anyone else, I think he should have to beat out one of those guys (probably Saunders or Collmenter)

Saunders won't sign for just a year... and, according to Towers, they are light-years apart on a multi-year deal. It's unlkely Saunders will be back...
Oswalt is also looking for a multi-year deal.

I have zero arguments to make against this deal and honestly I can't see how anyone else can either.

While I think Parker has a bright future, essentially KT gave up a maybe for as close to a sure thing as he can get. To me, when ages are similar, I ALWAYS go for the proven commodity.

Cahill, at 23, has 40 wins in his first three seasons as a starter on the MLB level and had not only All-Star caliber numbers in 2010, but some could argue CY YOUNG numbers. Also, it's not as though he came from out of left field as a prospect that wasn't supposed to be; he was rated as Baseball America's 11th best prospect for 2009 (for what it's worth, Parker was 29th on that same said list). Topping things off, he's under a VERY reasonable team controlled contract until 2017.

I don't know why it's considered by some publications "trading against the future" because Cahill is YOUNGER than two of the prospects they traded to get him and is the same age as Parker. It's not like he's peaked, he's only going to get better with time himself, as indicated by his +29 increase in strikeouts in 2011.

They didn't morgage the future.. They added an equally young, proven commodity to their future plans.

I know you're a UA fan, so reading isn't your strong suit...but lets try this again:

I'm not saying anything bad about THIS trade. I just hope they don't trade away too many other prospects and try to go for it now and shorten their very long window.

You didn't say anything about world peace, but I assume you feel that is an issue in the world. You brought up the issue of mortgaging the future because you thought it was relevant to this trade.

Also, my comments were more about all the comments on this board, not just yours.

Thanks for telling me why I brought something up...thats bizarre to say the least. I brought it up because of what Towers was saying in the linked articles.

Hence you thought it was relevant... I'm not claiming to know you, this is a logic argument. Similarly, I can claim that you are posting on this board because you are interested in the Diamondbacks. Regardless, I'm moving on from this.

I'll accept your belief that they should not neglect their farm system. A smaller market team could never win by doing so. However, I don't really see any reason to be concerned about this at the moment.

Because again, I was replying to what Towers said in the linked articles. I don't see why this is so tricky for you.

I understand. I just don't see KT literally betting the farm like Josh Byrnes used to do. I think we're done trading top-tier prospects this offseason.

Here's how I see it playing out with the four guys you mentioned:

  1. Goldschmidt is going to be phenomenal. With Pujols out of the NL, don't be surprised to see him get all-star consideration.
  2. Ryan Roberts is very underrated. Reliable with runners on base, good power, and good speed.
  3. Hill won't hit 30 HRs like he did a couple of seasons ago, but he still can be a solid hitter and man the 2nd base position for a while
  4. You know what you're going to get with CY: inconsistency at the plate but very good defensively.

Call me the majority but I do not like this trade for two reasons:

1. Parker could win very well win 15 games this year and I feel is a better pitcher with better stuff than Cahill, despite his 40 wins.

2. Parker is cheaper and under club controll for 6 years.

Parker by year's end I feel would have estalished himself as the team's #2 behind Kennedy. Cahill had one great year with 2 subpar years and coming to the NL West won't help when you face offenses like COL, LA & SF. He may be a groundball pitcher but has a 5.10 ERA outside of Oakland Coliseum. Would rather have went for Gio with what we gave up.

If we were going to trade Parker you get a staff ace, Cahill isn't even the best pitcher on his team. I would have offered OAK Corbin & Brewer along with Cahill and Cook. At least when we traded 6 prospects for Haren he was one of the top pitchers in the game, we may have made a big mistake trading Parker and not re-signing Saunders IMO.

Edit: Would rather have traded Parker for Mat Latos who just got traded to CIN. Of course CIN gave up a lot for him.

We'll have to re-visit this talk at years end.

SF was without Buster Posey for a majority of the year put him in with Sandoval, that changes their offense drasticaly. COL w/ CarGo & Tulo are dangerous especially if they get hot.

We'll revisit at the end of the year, but barring injuries and if Parker is on the A's for the whole year, he has a better year than Cahill or I will happily eat crow. ASFN bucks would come in handy here.

Compared to facing Texas and the Angels? And going through the gauntlet of the rest of the AL?

And the DH -- nine batters in the lineup (the DH often an extra spot in the heart of the order) and no pitcher's spot to pitch around with the preceding batter.

The DH situation is not only physical. It is the starting pitcher knowing through most of the game that there is no relief to ease his stress. The emphasis on hitting is not how baseball became the national pastime.

The offenses are comparable. TEX finished #3 in MLB in runs, COL #8, LAA was #17 & LAD #21. Plus the NL has PHI & STL so it ain't no cake walk. You have the DH yes, but what I'm saying is that Cahill will not be that much of an improvement over Parker & Saunders if he is at all.
