Every year there is an excuse as to why we didnt win. We complain aboutinjuries every 3 years or so that held us back. Meanwhile I watch teams like the Patriots use a wr as a CB and win superbowls.
My god imagine if we started Boldin at CB because our defense was decimated by injuries to that extent. We would gleefully go 2-14 and say "Yeah of course we had a darn wr at cb for crying out loud!"
I cant tell you how many years I was forced to watch the Eagles win 9 or 10 games a year with dozens of injuries. It would seem injuries impact the cardinals by a much larger factor than anyone else.
Good, deep, talented teams have winning seasons no matter what happens.
So before this season begin lets call it like it is. Whiz has enough talent to have a winning season. Im not saying playoffs exactly I am saying it should be a breeze to get 9 wins with this much talent in such an awful division/conference.
Look, the median average of all teams is 8-8. The average injuries sustained by a typical NFL team do not regularly amount to starting undrafted free agent rookies or waiver-wire QB's that you sign less than a week before a game. But the team went 8-8. We do not deserve annointing as a good/great football team until we earn it, but 8-8 is a lot better than the Raiders did last year & deserves the appropriate respect from a *Raiders* columnist of all people.
I am not saying the Cardinals should use injuries as an excuse. But if you are signing 1st string guys in midseason off the waiver wire or practice squad and finish with a competitive record, you are not a "truly bad" NFL team, whatever that means.
I agree with you on not having alibis but it's probably unwise to use the Pats as a comparison. You don't see many teams pulling off a lot of stuff that they do. If the Cowboys ran out of CB's they would probably sign someone before converting T.O. or someone to CB.
My other point is that she really has to be squeezing her eyes tight shut
to think the Cards do not have at least as competitive a team as last season. We have guys who played a lot during the 8-8 year that either can't make this team or are barely hanging on. You could make a case, within the realm of respectable journalism, that our record will not improve in '08 for x, y, or z reasons -- but not that we've gone back to being a cellar team again, that's just purely cynical and hackish.
