Synopsis from Comingsoon.net:

Based on the Stephenie Meyer book, the Catherine Hardwicke-directed romantic thriller is coming to theaters on December 12. The film tells the story of 17-year-old Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) who moves to the small town of Forks, Washington to live with her father, and becomes drawn to Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a pale, mysterious classmate who seems determined to push her away. But neither can deny the attraction that pulls them together... even when Edward confides that he and his family are vampires. Their unorthodox romance puts her in physical danger when Edward's nemesis comes to town and sets his sights on Bella.

-----------------------

I am posting this because I've been hearing a lot about these books and this film. Stephenie Meyer, the author, went to school in Scottsdale.

My wife is so geeked to see this movie - she has read the books (2 or 3 in this series) as well as Meyer's latest (The Host) and thinks she is the greatest. I haven't read them yet - they seem too "chick" to me.

We knew we had to check out the trailer for Twilight because it is based on Arizona author Stephenie Meyer's book and, well, we're a sucker for vampire stories (top-shelf quality pun intended). (Related article on Meyer)

Secretive sorts, those vampires. That's true of the trailer, as well, (See it here) which gives little of the story away. In a movie like this, that's probably a good thing.

We meet Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a pale, mysterious fellow, and Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), a girl who is . . . well, pale and mysterious. We sense chemistry.

There's obviously more to Edward than meets the eye. When Bella asks how long he's been 17 and he replies, "A while," you don't get the idea that it's just been a few months since his birthday. Then, when he keeps a car from slamming into her with his bare hands and later hoists her on his back and flies away, you think, hmm, maybe something's up. There's also ominous talk among Edward's friends about Bella not fitting in.

It's worth noting the fun had with the genre - Edward roams around in broad daylight, for instance. And the look of the film, from what we see, is cool - overcast, rainy, all that.

So will the film follow the book? Or diverge from it?

We'll find out Dec. 12, when Twilight debuts. Till then, we'll refrain from puns about sinking our teeth into it or whatever.

You're welcome.

Just started reading the books. They are engrossing...captivating.

Yes, they could be called "chicky" but there is an incredible tension in them.

Twilight

Release Date: November 21, 2008
Studio: Summit Entertainment
Director: Catherine Hardwicke
Screenwriter: Melissa Rosenberg
Genre: Romance, Thriller
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (for some violence and a scene of sensuality)
Website: TheTwilightmovie.com

Starring: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Billy Burke, Peter Facinelli, Elizabeth Reaser, Cam Cigandet, Nikki Reed, Jackson Rathbone, Ashley Greene

Plot Summary: "Twilight" is an action-packed, modern-day love story between a teenage girl and a vampire. Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) has always been a little bit different, never caring about fitting in with the trendy girls at her Phoenix high school. When her mother re-marries and sends Bella to live with her father in the rainy little town of Forks, Washington, she doesn't expect much of anything to change. Then she meets the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a boy unlike any she's ever met. Edward is a vampire, but he doesn't have fangs and his family is unique in that they choose not to drink human blood. Intelligent and witty, Edward sees straight into Bella's soul. Soon, they are swept up in a passionate, thrilling and unorthodox romance. To Edward, Bella is what he has waited 90 years for – a soul mate. But the closer they get, the more Edward must struggle to resist the primal pull of her scent, which could send him into an uncontrollable frenzy. But what will Edward & Bella do when a clan of new vampires – James (Cam Gigandet), Laurent (Edi Gathegi) and Victoria (Rachelle Lefevre) – come to town and threaten to disrupt their way of life?

That "tension" had my wife riled up all the time.

She's stoked to watch this film. It's release coincides with an out of town work trip to a town that plays movies at the time they are released, she'll be tagging along to watch the movie while I work.

The previews look god awful.

This move looks dreadful.

The Bella is annoying as hell. Terrible movie; I won't watch it. It would ruin the series for me.

The series isn't even that good..the first book was the best because you only expected a chick story and any fighting or action of any kind was an added bonus.
The second was depressing with Edward leaving her and 300+ pages were suicidal thoughts, as was the third in some ways (relating to Jacob's situation) and the final book was one of the bigger disappointments in a story I've ever had. This is a very average and overrated book series, written by a writer who is unable to explain any type of action, whether it's fighting...or action in bed

I'll still be seeing this first movie though with some friends who got me to read them.

Disagree on all counts. I loved the last book.

Great books. I won't see the movie if they paid me to watch it.

Sorry, I hate a big build-up and a lame excuse to finish. It did start off as one of the better books.

Being very vague here as to not give anything away. :p

And somehow in this "dangerous" world, everyone survives through all these badly written battles

Oh well, the first one did become one of my favorite books even though the first 200 or so pages were boring, but I got through those quickly.

Wife loved the books. Was amped to watch this flick and did so on Friday night.

She hated it. Thought it did the book zero justice, didn't like the casting of I believe all characters, didn't like the mixing of some story lines from later books thrown in even though they plan on doing a trilogy, thought it was so cheesey it was laughable, and her biggest complaint was some character played by an english dude who tried to speak with an american dialect and to her sounded ********.

The writing was on the wall and I tried to warn her. Terrible ratings at rottentomatoes and imdb.

Thankfully I didn't watch this with her.

Oh wow. I actually liked it.

I don't think anyone who hasn't read the books would like this at all, but I really enjoyed it.

Maybe because I had such low expectations, but I had a great time. So did the wife. Edward was very, very good. Bella..meh, ok. She grew on me. Alice was perfectly casted. Jacob didn't have enough screen time to really feel any way or another.

I am very surprised at how much I did like it.

I'm officially out of touch. This movie, along with HSM 3 swept the MTV movie awards last night.

boo, tween girls are keeping these movies alive and while they continue to do that, the horror genre suffers.

BOO...

Saw this last night good movie. Were any parts of the film filmed in Arizona?

The opening scene shows downtown Phoenix and a plane taking off from Sky Harbor. :D

Yes it was a total chick flick. I found it cheesey yet somewhat entertaining at the same time. Pretty much what you would expect from a teen drama. My wife liked it but she has read all of the books.

If you were an immortal vampire why on earth would you spend your days in High School taking tests, doing homework, and hanging out with kids who are so hormonally imbalanced they make steroid users seem sane?
