Stoops seems to have turned things around, finally. I wish the U could have waited to see if he could build on last year, or if the team is going to take a step back.

Ugh, Bad move... we'll all be calling for his head if we fail to make a bowl game in 09/10 (which I think is about a 50/50 chance at this point)

I'll go against the grain and say I am happy this happened.

Stoops isn't perfect. And he has a personality and temprement that wears on people when things aren't going right. But I think Cat fans need to realize how deep in the moreass we were with Mackovic and that this wasn't your typical turnaround job.

I like the staff he has put around him, i like the recruiting classes he has inline for 2010 already, and I REALLY like how he handed ASU their azz last year.

We will see if he can build upon this but if he has another 8 win season and didn't get this raise he surely would have been looking next season.

I am on board with this. But this year will be the temperature check.

Last year was nice but now we will see where we are as a program.

At the very least if he does get fired for incompetence 2 years from now he restocked the cabinet. For that I am grateful as I have never been less happy with a "team" that I root for then I was when Mackovic was head coach.

It's a dumb idea because Stoops hasn't proven anything except that it takes him 5 years to go to have a winning record in the conference. What happens if we go 5-7 this year which isn't out of the realm of possibility (same goes for ASU, but that's a different topic) considering nobody has seen our QB play?

All I expect from any Arizona coach now that basketball is going to be sick again is winning 6-8 games just about annually while allowing a hiccup every few years while having a great season here and there. And putting an entertaining product with good kids who play hard. This isn't asking the world.

I'm with you. I think Stoops is doing a good job. The overall talent of the team is getting better each year.

Agree. Stoops inherited a program that was so bad and now he has his players in the system and he has depth. This year's defense is going to be his best yet and if Scott or Foles can produce and keep the turnovers down, the Cats can win just as many games as last year.

I really like what Stoops has done and it's only going to get better. Destroying ASU and beating BYU in The Las Vegas Bowl last year has this program definitely going in the right direction.

I love the fact many of you are hanging your hat on beating ASU last year, and more laughably in a year where we didn't even make a bowl game. Give that man a raise!!! Maybe you were asleep for the previous 3 where Stoops continually embarrassed himself and his team. Congrats on that Vegas Bowl win though, next year the mighty Sun Bowl!!!

Um, do you really not see it's the same as ASU fan hanging their hat on beating Arizona Basketball the last two years when being coached by a radio analyst and a complete psychopath? The same two years that were capped by 6th and 4th place finishes and NIT and Round of 32 trips which are laughable accomplishments to any basketball program that takes it's hoops seriously?

Stoops leaves a lot to be desired as a head coach, but perhaps you should take a gander at the ASU people on this board if you want to discuss people getting overexcited about taking advantage of their rival during their valleys.

Oh, of course...it's hilarious both ways. ASU fan will try and talk our "rising" basketball program up, and you guys will try to talk your football program into "if this happens, or if we can just get this guy" as well. It's all a fun part of the trash talking process. In the end, ASU will usually be better at football, and the Cats at basketball. Luckily for both sides, dreaming is free.

Actually the difference is you would need to go another 24 years to reach our programs level of excellence.

ASU is not very good at football now and wasn't all that great in the past. I am not trying to be a dick but there is no comparison. Last year just showed that the gap is not as wide as myopic ASU fans would have you believe.

You guys could have taken over on us with a bad hire and the mess of the last two years in basketball. But Miller essentially knocks any chance of that happening.

And Dennis Erickson isn't as good as you guys think apparently. We will see. I feel good about the direction of the team and one of those reasons is Dykes. Thats a Stoops hire.

If we beat you again this year have we justified ourselves? Its not like you have a coach who would be a lightweight. Russ and KO aren't coming back to help you add on in basketball either.

It jst gets tired that you ASU fans represent the devils as some powerhouse that UA has no chance to compete with.

I think it would be difficult for you to even compare the too. I am not trying to be arrogant but we were actually a "dominant" program in the Pac-10 on a year in and year out basis with few exceptions.

When have you guys ever done that or how long has has that been more accurately. I keep reading how you guys are a sleeping giant and you all thought as much in Erickson's first year but to me you guys are paper tigers. But your program never wakes up. And in reality like UA football - its a tough place to win consistently due to certain factors out of our control (recruiting base, facilities, comp in the Pac-10)

Under Koetter you guys went soemthing like 0-14 in California. What kind of powerhouse or even potential sleeper does that?

Personally I don't think there is any coimparison between ASU football and UA Basketball. You have had one good year in my lifetime of sports watching which started like 18 or so years ago.

Again, you are only furthering my point here, yet you seem not to understand this.

I will quote myself to make this simple: "in the end, ASU will usually be better at football, and the Cats at basketball."

You turn it into a multiple paragraph manifesto about how dominant the Cats are, and the circle begins again. Where did anyone make any mention about ASU football being some powerhouse that U of A will never be able to compete with?

There is no comparison between Arizona Basketball and ASU Football. Of course there is no comparison between Arizona Football and ASU Football despite the Sun Devil's historical underachieving. ASU Basketball and Arizona Football are pretty comparable. ASU Baseball is a machine while Arizona Baseball is an underachiever but I could care less about non-revenue generating sports.

In the words of Colin Cowherd you have to "know who you are" and Arizona is a very mediocre football program with limited facilities, recruiting base, tradition, and revenue streams. ASU has us beat in all four categories just as we have ASU beat in all four in hoops. And anyone who follows college sports will tell you (everyone except syracuselaxman) that over time those things when all is said and done win you games. It's going to take somebody a whole lot better than Mike Stoops (or Herb Sendek) to make that change.

I think you are missing my point. I am saying "no - its not impossible for UA football to be as good as ASU football over a 5-10 year period" as that is not much of a bar that was set. My point is UA is considered a crown jewel of the past 25 years of NCAA basketball. ASU football is an also ran at the level of a Arkansas or UCLA or something. Other then one year, ASU football hasnt' done jack in 25 years.

Bottom line - ASU will never be on UA's level at basketball. But I don't think its out of the realm that UA catchs up in football. Again my point is the difference in ASU basketball catching UA and UA football "catching" ASU is a chasm the size of the grand canyon.

I'd like to look back in 10 years and see if your "ASU will usually be better then UA football" axiom is still true. I am not sure it will be. Canyou say the same in bball?

To make it simple I am challenging this statement - "in the end, ASU will usually be better at football, and the Cats at basketball."

And unlike Mao I am not convinced that Stoops can't be that guy. This year will be the litmus test IMO.

And the same debate rages on. I figured Mao's last post outlined the basic truths of the U of A/ASU debate nicely, and furthered my point. The basic framework of ASU football will make it more likely that they will be more successful, just like U of A basketball. Is it more likely that U of A football will catch up than ASU basketball? Of course, but who knows? With basketball, you really only need a couple good classes in a row to turn things around, whereas football requires much more personnel.

I think you've been pretty persistent in your insistence that U of A is a "crown jewel" of basketball, whatever the hell that means. We get it, your premise is that U of A hoops is infallible and guaranteed to be a top team forever. Let's wait until a person not named Lute does anything there. Will Miller be the answer? There is a good chance, but there have been plenty of good programs that haven't recovered after losing an icon.

Let the debate rage on...unless you are in the possession of a crystal ball, it's all mental masturbation.

Basically it just comes down to I looooooove talking ish to ASU fans.

We had a tough year in 2007 so I now I am puffing out my chest and loving every second of it now that things seem to start to be heading back our way.

Who said there was any such thing as logic or reason in rivalry?:)

Nothing's impossible, some things are just very highly unlikely. Lisa Love or Jim Livengood would have to make an extremely savvy hires AND convince those guys to stay for hometown discounts for the tides to completely turn after generations of the status quo.

Of course, both ASU Basketball and UA Football had that chance in the last few years but went with Herb Sendek and Mike Stoops when Jeff Capel and Urban Meyer or Brian Kelly were available.
